My husband came to all my races my first year. Second year, he only came to the Half Mary. After that, I was on my own. He hates gettingup early. So he is very supportive with my cycling/triathlons habit and never complains. I always make time for time and tell him what I am doing and such. I think that is extremely important in this type of relationship.

Finished Day 1 of MS Sedona...BRUTAL!! Well, first 75 miles were lots of rollers with some steep climbs, but nothing I couldn't handle. Last 13 miles were downhill...facing 20mph winds. I'm really glad they cut the ride short by 10 miles! Over 5000' of climbing. Toughest ride ever! I will do a RR for this one. LOL! Recovering for day 2! Wishing everyone good luck with their races tomorrow!!!!

Thanks Becky Ken and DJ. I admit I do have periods of feeling very sorry for myself over perceived lack of spouse support - although in reality I know a lot of people are at races on my own. It's good to know it's not just me. I will just have to buck up and get on with it - and make sure I can carry all my gear on my own!!

Right, I'm off for a bike ride - not as hard as dj's though!!

Training for any of this stuff is tough...I think it's better to have a supportive partner in training than the actually racing. My hubby is very understanding about my being gone for lone ride/runs on the weekends. Racing is here or there...sometimes they come but it's probably 50/50! Triathlon is not the greatest spectator sport. This is where REV3 really gets it right...no issues when I'm racing at Quassy (an amusement park/beach) - especially the 1/2 since i won't be finishing before 1 - so they have plenty of time to get up, go to the park, enjoy the rides and see me finish.

I'll never forget the 1st time I raced REV3 Quassy - I did the Oly so I finished just past 10am - well the park didn't open until 11 and my husband and kids were at the finish chute and my son (5 at the time) just had this sad look on his face - nothing like having to stand around for 45 minutes or so looking at all the rides not being open -- he was pissed. First thing he said to me after I crossed the finish line ..."Mommy do you have any snacks!"

Two good training rides this weekend - total of 85 miles total - long (slow) run today.

Wow, something different here. I stopped getting all email notifications so I assumed the site was still down. Home now and good to see Ken and Robin rocking it in FL. Ken had a wicked fast bike split and Robin had a speedy swim. Keep it up guys!

My sprint race went okay today. It was rainy and cold so I wasn't really feeling it and they changed the course so comparisons to last year don't mean much.

Yes, that's a fair point. My partner is generally supportive on the training side but he thinks i don't leave enough time for him..which is probably true. However, we have now sorted out a plan where I can do a bit more of both.
You are right about spectators hanging around for triathlons can get very bored..my son was 11 when i started and was very when I was going to races with him..as long as i left him with some money to buy snacks with (and I did have a friend to keep an eye on him to begin with). However, he is now 14 and incapable of getting out of bed in the mornings. I think he's a little bit proud of me though.
Well done on the bike today.

Thanks for the update on the Ken and Robin. You're not being hard on yourself on the sprint again are you? Have a great rest of the day.

I didn't see any e-mails today either!  T

Thanks Bill, it was highlight of my race.  The bike has been a focus this year, but apparently at the expense of the swim.  The run was just survival mode with it being 91 degrees and sunny.  No complaints from me on this one.  The swim on the other hand was a WWF cage match that I just never got comfortable with.

I did get a chance for a brief chat with Robin on the bike course!  I think she was having a good race!  It wouldn't surprise me that she had a good swim as she is a strong swimmer.  I met her yesterday as well as her husband and dad, glad to be able to meet any of you in person!  I hope you get to enjoy the rest of your vacation Robin!!

Great Job Robin and Ken! I wish I could go that fast on the bike....then again if I did there's no way I could go that fast on the run! Great job.

Great job Ken, Bill and Robin! Bummer the weather was uncooperative for your race Bill.

My Oly didn't go as well as I would have liked. I was faster than last year, but ended up with a 3:02:32, not under 3 as I hoped. My swim was good at 28.37, bike 1:31.44 (still too slow, but I felt good), and my run was 58.01 (it is a grueling run). So, even though I didn't meet my goal I am still happy. I am stoked with my 1:45 - 100 yard pace on the swim. Back to the drawing board on the bike!

He says he doesn't mind me pursuing triathlon, but he doesn't want to do any type of exercise with me and he wishes me luck for races as long as he doesnt' have to get out of bed to come with me or hang around while I'm competing (which I have to admit..I do take a long time). So, my job is to get my head around this and not expect him to come with me. Once you are at a race and have sorted things out (I always get very nervous about getting my bike into transition on time - finding parking etc ) but once that's done I've always found both other triathletes and runners very friendly and supportive so i don't mind being on my own. So, I think we're sorted with that

Like others i am really looking forward to hearing how all your races go.

Jennifer

Jennifer, I've been through some similar discussions with my partner, too. After several years (and with 2 small kids) I feel like we have come to a pretty good understanding. He doesn't really enjoy coming to my races, either, but on the other hand he's evolved into an excellent cook and he likes to help with all my gear and keep it in fantastic working order, which is not my strength. I just needed to let him support me in a way HE found enjoyable, and get used to training/racing on my own. This year we bought a camper so hopefully it will be easier for him and the kids to come with me to some of my races. Now he's just started to get into biking, so I am having fun learning how to support him (so far mostly training advice that he ignores.

Good luck with your HIM training! I'm getting so nervous about the one I signed up for.

Jennifer,
I have the same issues with my husband. Funny though, he used do marathons and tris all the time when we were dating. His last marathon was 12 years ago. I am hoping he will soon change his tune. He is planning to a sprint in August with his nephew. He feels I coerced him into it, but he is doing it none the less. I am keeping my fingers crossed that he gets the bug again!

I thought is was strange that there were no posts today! Now I know why.
Ken and Robin, I am glad you two were able to meet up. That must have been fun.
I haven't had a chance to look at any results on line but a good swim for Robin and good bike for Ken sounds like a success!
It sounds like many others raced or road in events this weekend. I hope they were good experiences for all.
Looking forward to reading some race reports

Well done on your oly - i know you may feel a little disappointed - we're all difference, but your times on all the disciplines are ones I can only dream of.

And a very well done to Ken and Robin.

Just to change the subject, on my bikeride outside yesterday I discovered that I've picked up a very bad habit from the trainer and that's dropping my head when the going gets tough! No actual accidents yesterday but it's a habit I'm going to have to get out of very quickly!

It is easy to get a bit lazy with some of the non-used bike skills on the trainer, but you just have to try and focus on head position, upper body position as well as hand placement.  But you realized it so now you can work on it, and you were out riding which in the end is most important!  Good job Jennifer!!

Great race Rita!!  You were close to your goal and bettered last year so call that a win!  Especially with the swim!

Keep riding, the bike will come.

Funny thing on the e-mail notifications, I think they were fixing the bug where you were notified on all of them including your own posts, and now I only get emails when I post.

It appears they are working hard to fix the bugs.  They have made navigating from friend to friend much more cumbersome, which was mentioned and added to the list of enhancements.

Recovery and travel for the next couple of days.  Not feeling terrible, but not feeling like I could do much either.

Train well!  I am headed to Zephyrhills, to see if I can find a new friend with a lot of new disposable cash to see if they would like to sponsor an over aged triathlete. Wink

Thanks Ken and Jennifer! I am glad I didn't get stone calf, never want that again. I am suprised and excited about my swim. I just have to make a break through with my biking.

I have a question for the group.. There is sprint tri at our local recreation center in two weeks. How should I modify my training in order to be better prepared for the race? Swimming will be a wash. I have been to the pool 2 times this year, but I am OK with the distance. Just wondering how to adjust in order to be ready for the shorter distance and higher intensity of the bike and run.

My wife does tri's to. Although, she's happy just to complete them. Her training isn't nearly to the extent as mine. She has other priorities like her business and ice skating hobby. We do a couple races together every year. She's on the sidelines helping me most of my races, which I am completely grateful for. However, there are times where I'm on my own or we are both racing. There's always a race or two a year where I help her and don't race as well. We just try to support each other any way we can, but both of us are pretty independant if we need to be. I always feel guilty training when we could be spending time together, so I just train early in the morning on weekends or when she's not home during the week.

Very best of luck to everyone competing today. It's pouring down in north east uk this morning so I admit I stayed in bed instead of getting out there. I did enjoy the lie in though so I think its been beneficial.

However, I have just realized that i have about 131/2 weeks till the HIM I have entered. You can find details of it on http://www.functionalfitnessevents.co.uk/index.php/events?layout=ed...

if you're interested. To me it looks v flat and safe..so I just have to sort out doing the distance.

Jennifer,
I feel for you - I've come to love when my family is there to support me but I never have any expectations. It's me against myself and that's how I race. Last year my family stuck it out in the rain during my HIM and I was so happy to see them at the finish line and yes it was a little sweeter having them at the finish line.

Your doing the right thing by talking about it. I constantly thank my wife for putting up with the training especially those 3-4 hour bike rides. It's a bit of an obsession at times and you can't fault the other party. Also I find that you have to just drop a training a session and move on and there's nothing wrong with that.

If anyone is interested in training with power, I am going to post a power tap rear wheel later this week. It is an easton EC90SL wheel. the powertap hub was serviced and fully upgraded with the latest guts in January of this year and it comes with a 1 year warranty from the date of service.

The cheapest EC90 SL rear wheel price I could find on line was pricepoint.com for $383.00 and I paid $350 to upgrade and service the hub. I am looking to net $700.00 for the wheel.

Let me know if you have any interest.

I'd taper a little the week of the race and add a few bricks before the week of the race. Maybe take a day or two off right before if you are nursing a few aches and pains. But I've found for sprints I don't seem to need to adjust my training much for them anymore.

Rita - Great race! The bike speed will keep climbing...

Family/Friends at races - I know this will be different for everyone, but I frankly prefer that my family not come to races, but am very thankful that they give me the time to train and race. With 3 little ones it's a hassle for them to get around and its one more thing for me to worry about. They've been to two race finishes and I was thrilled to see them at both (first HIM and first IM in AZ). But when I think about the logistics it just gives me a headache. The scene at an IM finish is NUTS. Some racer decided to charge up the spectators bleacher wearing his transition backpack, knocking my 5 y/o daughter over and almost off of a high bleacher. My wife had to hand the kids down one at a time to kind stranger to escape. Most triathletes are fantastic from beginning to end but there are sometimes a few who think the world owes them something for S/B/R'ing a long way...

I do like to see people I know, even a little, at races. This was one of the big draws to me to racing with the the local bike store.

Now if you can get your family to participate, that makes all the difference, but still hard logistically. If his swimming is progressing well enough, my son will do his first tri on June 8 (25 yd swim, 1 mile bike, 500yd run). That will mean we all have to go, since I'm volunteering early and the younger girls need watching.

I've got fairly large volume of training to squeeze in this week and unfortunately started it by sleeping in this morning. Oops. Happy training all.
