Master 2621 Mechanicsburg, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread swishyskirt - 2010-07-07 11:11 PM Argh. So, the heat is also killing my nutrition plan (ok, maybe not killing it, but maybe kicking it a little). The heat is melting, melting, melting my favorite Balance Bar (choc chip cookie dough), which sadly, makes it somewhat inedible. Technically, I could probably still suck it down, but it's a gooey mess, and to be honest, it's a bit unappetizing in its hot melty state. I'd rather not have to convince myself to eat my nutrition foods on race day. So this week, I'm experimenting with some other options (I know, I know, don't do anything new--I figure if it blows up on me this week, I'll figure out a way to freeze the Balance Bars in a freezer overnight and hope for the best, weather-wise. I don't want to tempt fate, but will it really be this hot at LP?). ANYWAY. Bought myself two Clif bars (choc. brownie and also choc chip--yes, I like chocolate) for a 4 hour ride I have planned on Friday. My biggest concern is the amount of fiber in these puppies: 5g...a whopping 20%. Seems a bit high--and not something I really want to deal with during Ironman... though the company touts them as a perfect snack for a 150 mile ride. Soooo...anyone have any experience with Clifs? Or other suggestions of non-melty items I could try? Help! (Thanks!) I am good with the fiber thing as well. Matter of fact; I normally eat a large bowel of oatmeal, raisin, cranberries, walnuts and ground flax seed 1 1/2 hrs before a big ride. Even done so for races as well with no problems. The Cliff bar you describe sounds like the chocolate coated and will melt. Power bar performance energy bars have a nice selection for chocolateholics. Will get real soft and sticky in heat but not melt. Edited by tasr 2010-07-08 9:34 AM |

I get creaking in my knees (no pain) My knees- they pop. And I just keep getting weird aches in random places, like my knees, or my traps, or this weird spot in my back. I've had no really lasting issues during training, but all of a sudden, my body is aching during each training session. I'm not worried, it's just weird! |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread I think with these last couple of days we are all going to lose some motivation. I see it as a sign that we are ready and have done it right. If I had this 'not wanting to train' feeling a couple of weeks ago, it would have been bad. But having it right before taper is perfect. I've got a 1:45 run today and then a 5 hr ride on Saturday... then it's repair the body time! Let's see if I can motivate myself to get this done today. At least I'm going to Columns where I will have people 'watching' me and I can't slack. |

That sounds about par for the course. It gets better, and come the 25th you'll be jumping out of your skin ready to tear it up around LP. :D

Extreme Veteran 398 Sea Isle City, NJ | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Just finished swimming the course in Mirror Lake and I must say it was hot as sh**. Did one loop then only did half of the second as I was baking in my wetsuit. Now I did it at 4PM during the hottest part of the day and you could tell the water deeper down was cooler. I think we will be fine at 7am in the morning. I am swimming again on Saturday morning and will give you an update. It is frickin beautiful up here.....I forgot just how damn beautiful. 2 loops on the bike tomorrow and a short run if all goes well. Last long ride. |

I get creaking in my knees (no pain) Not that my training could even begin to compare with you two, but I have a sudden and random weird popping in the back of my ankle. No pain, no problem running or biking or, well, ANYTHING, but every time I walk down a flight of stairs, there's this soft popping feeling in the back of my ankle. Trying to decide whether to freak out about it or just pop away... |

5 | Subject: RE: Ironman USA Lake Placid : Official Thread Thursday, July 8 - Postcard from Lake Placid 1. This will be my first Ironman 2. Yesterday I biked to the top of Whiteface. 3,500 feet of climbing in 8 miles, about the same climb and distance as the Tour de France's iconic L'Alpe du Huez stage, according to a few websites I visited. Go after 5:15 pm and the climb is free plus you have the road to yourself; i.e., no cars. The only signs of life I saw were two foxes. If you bike to the top and think you are hot stuff, think again: in this year's race two unicyclists made it all the way up. http://www.whitefacerace.com/bikeresults.html 3. This morning while running along River Road a coyote sped past me. 4. Simply Gourmet has 46 kinds of sandwiches. The tuna I had for lunch and dinner today is fresh and delish. The restaurant is located are a few miles west of Lake Placid, as you head to Saranac Lake. (Look for the miniature golf courses.) 5. Tuesday evening I hobbled into Balanced Bodywork & Massage because my left hip was making "popping" sounds. Christina gave me a massage and acupuncture. In a nice way she said biking 2,400 miles and climbing 96,000 of elevation is good and all, but to ramp up performance the knots in the muscles need regular repair. Her fingers found some painful spots that have escaped my closed-cell foam roller. It is not too late to get a few massages. When I get home tomorrow I will set up a few sessions with a local massage therapist, and then see Christina again on Friday before the race. Meg is also excellent. 6. So far I like the taste and simplicity of the Infinit nutrition product. No gels, no bars, no electrolyte capsules to fumble with...you just "eat" by drinking. Infinit is recommended by Endurance Nation. I have only used the product for 3-4 weeks, so the acid test for me is IMLP. 7. I'll probably need 7 hours to bike the course. If you are in the same boat, speed-wise, consider a 12-28 rear cassette. In two previous trips to Lake Placid I used a 12-25. With the 12-28, I maintained a higher cadence (high-80s/low-90s) climbing Papa Bear than before, with12-25. And this higher cadence was after climbing Whiteface. A high cadence is important to keep the blood circulating and the legs fresh--especially on the second leg of the bike with the start of the run just a few minutes away. 8. Thank you to the many generous Ironmen and Ironwomen who have shared their tips on this board. I copy the useful ideas into a Word doc, which has turned into a kind of a playbook, one which I study to improve my chances of having the best possible race experience. |

Both accomplish about the same thing, right? Maybe I'll alternate. Freak out about the ankle on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and then the weather on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the weekend? Gotta pass the time somehow... |

I've had that same pop/click in my achilles/calf area before when getting some big miles in. It didn't hurt at all, just felt weird and made this tiny click. It went away after backing off for a couple days, which you are about to do in a major way. If there's no pain, that's something to be happy about, not freak out about. Pain is your body's warning system, not popping/clicking. |
