Looking here it appears out and back is just over 7 miles so about 3.5 miles each way.

LP Run Question: When making a left on River Rd., what is the distance to the turn-around?

if the turnaround is the same as the LP Marathon, and I think it is, it is 3.1-3.2 miles

just looked at my garmin map file from when I did a training run druing the LP marathon.

turned onto river road just past 2 miles, turned around at mile 5 (note, I didnt start my garmin at the LP IM run start, so the turn onto river road is more than 2 miles into the course)

here is a link to the file that has mile markers:

http://tpks.ws/Nb7m

EDIT...whops...my math is off...looks like just under 3 miles

PennState - 2010-07-09 10:14 AM Last long run in. Hot, humid and much hillier route than LP. Now I'm off to a water park for the day with the family.

Happy training folks!

Water park sounds like fun. Also, you could maybe get one more swim in while you're there...

LP Run Question: When making a left on River Rd., what is the distance to the turn-around?

Yup, roughly 3.5 miles each way the first time through the run.  Second time through the run, it feels like 12.5 miles each way.  Lots of time to smile as you finish up the run!

My last scheduled long ride (today) was my first epic fail workout in my entire IMLP-focused training period (6 months), but had valuable lessons learned.  I hopped on the bike around 1:00PM today, instead of my normal 5:30AM.  No worries, I thought... I'm acclimated to the heat and I'll just drink a little bit more.

I called it quits at 25ish miles with early warning signs for serious heat problems if I kept at it... nausea, stopped sweating, HR would not come down below 130 even when I stopped in the shade for 10 minutes (normally it drops below 100 within 60 seconds when I stop).  Although I didn't feel it for the first hour of the ride, my garmin shows that my HR was about 18bpm faster than it normally would have been for an IM-pace ride.  I need to learn to listen to my body better.  I still feel like crap 90 minutes later.

Stupid me needs to remember that you can't just throw some extra water down the hatch and expect to perform at the same level when it's scorching hot/humid.  I should have backed off on the pace too, but got sucked into the 20mph-or-it-doesn't-count trap.  Instead of a quality 70-80 mile ride, I had a crappy 25.  Lesson learned, particularly if it's hot on race day.  If I had been racing IM today, I'm certain I would have DNFed from that mistake.

How were you prepped? Did you eat your normal stuff, or slack off? I've done this, eat x before early ride, but nothing for lunch before an afternoon ride. same basic problem. Refuel and hydrate ASAP!

Like Josh I had a horrible workout day as well. I did complete both loops of the course up here but was so humid and hot. I took in over 128oz of fluid during the ride but I still ended up dehydrated as I was also getting nausea on the bike. I was unable to have a successful run afterwards. Legs felt fine, but was lightheaded. I am chalking this up to fatigue and dehydration and moving on to the taper.

On a positive note, the course is still absolutely stunning visually. Let me be the first to raise his hand and say I'm not crazy about the new out and back and how it affects the course. We all have to race it so it doesn't matter, but I think I preferred the old course. Oh well, we can't control that!

Welcome to the taper!!

Not uncommon to have terrible workouts at this stage. There is a lot of training fatigue going on for all of us now

^^^^^^

This is why BT and this thread rocks.  People in the "know" can explain everything and make you feel better with just a quick response.  Thanks again to all you BT "Vets" that help us get through and answer our questions.

Meant to add to my earlier notes (see above) that when I biked 5 hours two days ago I did not pee once, which is always a red flag. A rule of thumb for the bike is that you need to pee twice; if less, then you may be dehydrated.

The effects of my lack of hydration struck when descending Whiteface. Thought I was going to pass out due to light-headedness. Once back in Wilmington I rode across the street to grab a hamburger, ice cream cone, and soda. I felt better afterwards. I drank 100 ounces of water during these five hours, but this was not enough, it would seem. If I ran after biking, I am sure my lack of hydration would have been a big problem.

With the hot weather of the last few weeks I spend lots of bike time thinking about gulping Diet Coke in big cups of ice. That or eating soft ice cream.

Agree with Monty...the new out-and back is "okay." We just go further north on Route 9 and along the Ausable River. But the shoulder is much narrower than between Keene and Jay.

OK...please no one freak out as it will be all ok and it is very manageable. The reason I am not happy with the new out and back is that it is more of a down and up. Elevation of Jay is 807 feet. Elevation of Ausable Forks is 550ft. It is not significant, but I could definately tell that the way out is faster than the return trip. Again, it is very very manageable...no freak outs. It just adds to the distance you will be climbing at the end of each loop. The other thing is the right hand turn is tighter to go back up 86 so you can't go in with any momentum like you could on the big sweeping left. Again....no freak outs....we can do this people! Just random thoughts after my ride today.

Ideally you should pee once per hour. I usually aim for 3 pees on a longer ride.

Soooooo? Who has learned to pee on the bike and plans to at LP?

I did several times in 08 but couldn't muster a drop today. Just one more reason to hope for a little rain.

That is one thing I have learned to do over the past few months. It's an art to do that while trying not trying to get it all over yourself.

I'll be peeing on the bike, because peeing your pants is the coolest.

I pee on the bike, but not in my shorts!  Although technically a violation of the rules, I'm a big fan of the make sure the coast is clear on a slight downhill hip rotation whip-it-out method.
