Me? I'm getting really sick of stuffing myself with carbs. It has been working well in training, especially for my BIG DAY, but can't wait to stop stuffing myself! |

I have only had time to be a voyeur over the past few months, but you know it is lonely out there and I need some contact with those who live this day in and day out. So I did my first Oly about a month ago...and I can say I finished..and the swim was good...the rest was down hill. Last race of the year coming up in September. Thanks for the entertainment over the past few months with some very interesting and enlightening topics, I will do my best to contribute...but I am sure I will have more questions then answers. Down at the Jersey shore this week, and hoping to get lots of training in, ran on the beach today, tried without socks for the first time...that was a mistake...some nice blisters...had to take my shoes off for the last two miles...love running in the surf Bruce btw - I had a nano holder as well and hated it...plugs never stayed in my ears, and it always sounded like they were singing underwater...I guess they were |

Sorry, been a little a busy watching the "Politics" here in the Cheeseland! All the outside special interest money can please leave our state now, you don't pay taxes here and don't vote here!!! AND now you lost again!!!! ................... Oh, and the NL Central Leading Brewers! ************* Rant over *************************** My first thought on the NY Tri is what a shame that in a sport centered around fitness, health, weight-loss, etc. that participants would have health issues during a race that could kill or injure. I also find it interesting that almost all the swimming "incidents" during races in the last three years are not related to drownings, but cardiac issues. However, people swimming with noodles in an OWS swim event in a river with current? IMO, that is just crazy. I understand they pulled a bunch of people out of the water also. Seems like a blatant lack of respect for the distance and dangers involved. If that type of lack of respect continues, I don't completely oppose the idea of having to graduate up the distance scale. I have heard that concept for a while now. For example, prove you have completed a sprint to sign up for an Oly, prove you have completed an Oly to sign up for a HIM, prove you have completed a HIM to sign up for a IM, etc. This process could mirror the US Cycling Category system that is designed to keep "pack" racing safe. In that system, you are required to have 10 mass starts at the Category 5 level before you move up to Category 4, no matter how fast you are or if you win all 10 of those races. This ensures you have the necessary experience to handle the next step up. Seems like the USAT could learn a little from that process. It would help insure that racing peeps had the necessary experience to complete the OWS distance. What thoughts do you have? Then again, we also have had 2 people taken out from behind on their bikes in the State in the last 2 weeks by inattentive drivers. At least they charged them both with vehicular manslaughter! So maybe the Good Lord has other plans for all of us! Get busy Livin' and Keep diggin' Although I do agree that people should "graduate" to certain races or distances but no one knows why people get pulled out, what initiated their cardiac arrest or given noodles if they were in trouble (people only given noodles if they were in trouble), it could happen to anyone including anyone in this group. The lady who died was supposedly in great shape, a great swimmer, in fact a competitive swimmer in high school and a life guard. According to her family she already finished a tri a month earlier. Don't disrespect people like this lady by making such broad statements. |

(sniffle sniffle) Any way you can channel whatever brain power you use when running into the pool? Or do you run with tunes? Other thoughts would be do to different sets in the pool -- do you normally just swim uninterrupted, or do you do drills/sets to break things up? |

Hi Kyla, I do try to break up sets and relax and focus on drills. That works well for me on almost all swim workouts. And I never use music when I run for safety reasons. But when swimming long distance, sharing a lane, and being inside, I do get bored and wondered if music helps other people : )

I used music while swimming for a couple weeks then it started driving me crazy, sounded like listening to a.m. radio from the 60's (yes I am that old). I started wearing a tempo trainer that beeps so I can get my stroke cadence, believe it or not it breaks up the monotony. I was a little worried about wearing it in the ocean, thought it might be like a sonar device and start attracting sharks...that along with a black wetsuit.....seal bait. |

Linda/Kyla--I can't imagine listening to music in the pool. I originally got that thing because I was having panic attacks and my very first swim teacher thought it might be a way to avoid them. I wore it once. It totally messed with my timing which is why it went to Tony. In an effort to have a more balanced stroke that is pretty much all I think about in the pool. Sometimes I drift away thinking I'll swim as fast as you guys one day, but that's fleeting! Off to eat some hills! |

I cranked out my longest bike ride ever on Wednesday - 128 km (5+ hours of ride time) - and today did a 2 hour run (20.3 km). 5 more weeks until my first HIM. I'm going to do one more Oly next weekend and hit about the same level bike/run that week before starting to taper off. |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed Hi Gang. I haven't been around much as you all know but I am happy to say that for the most part that is a good thing. I am teaching and training much more and things seem to be going good in that area. Areas that are not so good we'll just ignore I have been training but haven't really had time to log or even keep up with all that has been going on. I did manage to get in about 30K running this week but no biking. CAUTION: Don't sign up for races after you have had a few scotches!!!!! I signed up for 3 races on a bet last night. 2 super sprints and a sprint. One of the super sprints and the sprint races are on the same day only hours apart. Should be a very interesting way to finish my season. My coaching is going well also. One of my athletes got a second place podium finish finally. A big break through for him. A couple of others are just in the finishing stages of preparation for their HIM's and I am coaching a beginner triathlete clinic where we have 15 new people who will be doing their race. It is so great to see them getting all excited about doing a triathlon. Good luck to all our racers especially those of you in the final preparation stages for IM Canada. I was reading in a Triathlon magazine that IM Canada has been running for 28 years. Isn't that older than some of you racers Edited by Redknight 2011-08-13 7:40 AM |

Master 1952 Guelph, Ontario | Subject: RE: SWBKRUN fast, furious, and closed TrevorC - 2011-08-11 10:45 PM this is a 'sucked it up post' Was looking forward to today's run. 2 hr run. last longish run. Mentally, the long runs would be done after today. I get out there- skies are looking dark, but who knows when. I get about 30 minutes in and it starts to rain. No problem. I'm not made of sugar(Tracy where are you??). And then it starts to pour. Like hard. I got back to the car in 50 minutes, soaked. Pathways were flooding over. Not good. I texted my coach when I got home. Told her the story. Everything was soaked. I was a drowned rat. she said " is it raining now?" "No" I say. "Ok well your orthotics will be dry within an hour go out and run the last 70 minutes." And you know what I did it. Felt good. Glad I did now. Awesome Trevor. Sound like you have a good coach I know you"re gonna rock the IM. Sugar was probably at home curled up with a good book and a hot chocolate, staying out of the rain |

Not a bad fall, but achy and scraped up. Also dealing with a flare of RA - not fun, making me whiney. Flew down to SoCal to start my girl at grad school, and sent my guys on a backpacking trip. Putting around the house, cleaning, sorting, etc......doing my workouts solo - and light. Lurking a bit on BT.....sending good thoughts to all! Amazed at some of your races and workouts!!! Back in the swing of things soon, I'm sure.
