The only breakfast (ritualistic maybe) before any event... bike/tri/run...  Thomas plain bagel with Jif creamy peanut butter & honey.  Has never failed me!

Good luck to Kev & Dan!

Hey Kel, Nicole ~ 'old' say what.... she should be able to get snot slingin', camode huggin' drunk and then do a Sprint the next morning at her age!  LMAO!    rehydrate after the race and extend the drunkenness!    Not that I have experienced that first hand or anything!

Isn't your first frost about a month away?

Good luck! Double check your calendar though just in case they moved the race to Saturday.  You never know. Surprised

loeber - 2010-06-18 10:03 AM I have a Try-a-Tri on Sunday in one of the most picturesque towns in Canada before heading to Banff for a Father's day Brunch with the whole family. It is more of a reson to get the family out of the city for the weekend than anything but I am looking forward to is because I missed the last race I was signed up for.

Pool swim (cuz the lake still has ICE around the shore). nice...

Jealous.  I LOVE Banff.  I've only been in the winter though.  It's awesome then and without the crowds.  We kept having visitors on our deck in the form of deer.  The snowshoeing and x-country skiing rivaled any place I have ever been.

Everyone besides EvD and fish: (no one is catching you)

Does the person in the next lane in the pool change pace when you start catching them?  On the very rare occasion I start or turn at the same time the person in the next lane generally speeds up when I catch them.  I only breathe on one side now so I am only getting one lane of view - does this happen to everyone? I have been much more concerned with distance than speed so far but I have on occasion pushed the tempo a bit on the last 25-50 to try to keep up or pass the next lane over.

I guess if people are racing to push blood out (Kim) they will race any time they have the chance.

Wait, which Kim you calling out?

I've never noticed it at my pool but the folks that are there when I go tend to be the same people every time and so they aren't strangers.  I always get my arse kicked when I am at about the same level as the person next to me since a great deal of them flip turn and I try to not push off the wall at all.  I'll work on flip turns in the off season though.

Doesn't happen to me but at our normal pool I am either next to EvD or another fish I know (Deb).

To answer the breakfast question - it's the same as JC.

Well if people start to catch up with me, then it leads me to believe I am not pushing hard enough, so I push harder and sometimes fend them off... other times the 60+ guy still passes me and the 'chubby' female teenager still passes me... Technique trumps power everytime! But I still test the theory when I am swimming next to them!

I relish in the fleeting moments when I am able to hang with or stay just in front of the couple IM finishers (both guys - younger than me and swim a touch faster) that swim at LA Fitness when I am there.  Some days I am the fish and most days I am the bait.

My go to breakfast:
Whole wheat tortilla smeared with PB, drizzled with honey and wrapped around a banana.

It looks awful funny but man it's tasty.

And Ken, I ALWAYS race the person int he lane next to me when I'm swimming.  I don't like being caught, so I will speed up if I know I'm going to be, or if I have a chance to catch someone, I bust my butt to do it.  I don't know why, it's not exactly the smartest way to train, but I guess it's my tiny competitive streak.  I do not have this problem biking or running or with most anything else in life... so who knows.

With the lanes I swim in,  and I only breath to the right, going down I try and hang with the fasties and coming back I want to be faster than them. Liek JC said if they are catching me I am slacking. There is a reason I moved up a lane.

I cooked dinner tonight. Not from my new cookbook but a recipe from a family friend, stuffed pasta shells.  I managed to burn my fingers but it was extremely good if I do say so myself. Anyway....

I'm looking at getting a hydration/fuel belt.  I am extremely heat sensitive and get dehydrated and overheated really easily.  My parents are constantly asking me how much water I've drank on days when it's really hot out and we're spending a good bit of time outdoors.    For this reason, running is a little intimidating to me in this summer heat.  I really want to be able to be outdoors and run but I'm a little worried about overheating/dehydrating.  I've tried carrying a bottle (holding it in my hand) and it was just a hassle.  Anyone have one or know of a good brand?  I don't need some fancy 8 bottle thing just something that will allow me to stay hydrated while i go for a run.

Also does anyone have a Road ID?  I was looking at getting one. Ever since I drove by a guy who got hit by a car one day going to school, I kinda felt like maybe I should look into getting one.  I don't carry an id with me when I run or bike so i was thinking it would be a good idea to get one just in case something were to happen.

Thoughts or suggestions??

I have a fuel belt but I'm not a fan.  It bothers my hips when I run with it.  This year Ken got me a CamelBack for Mother's Day.  They make them super light now, the one I have holds 50 ounces which is perfect for runs and it bothers me much less than the fuel belt.  The only drawback is sometimes I want water ON me rather than in me and it doesn't work well for that.  I tried a hand held and it drove me crazy, I kept switching back and forth.

I do have a Road ID and so does Ken.  I got the one that goes around my ankle and I love it, it doesn't bother me at all.  The only thing I would change is the color, I got black but wish I had gotten a different color so it stood out more and was more obvious.

I'm with Keri regarding water.  I hate carrying anything and I have tried many around the waist ones and hate them all.  Some people are ok with things around their waist but I appear to not be one of them.  Which would explain why I still wear by shorts that have stopped fitting long ago and someday will fall down on me while out in public.  I also use a Camelbak for running.  Mine is made specifically for biking but it has been working really well for running.  I actually don't get bothered by it so much that I toyed with wearing it during the HIM.  Doubt I will though.

Update on the bike.  The mechanic thinks it's ok.  I actually still haven't heard from him but the holes were on both sides and where the wheels were but I do know that both wheels ran tru when he tested them.  There goes my reason to buy Zipps.    He did glance at the rest of it but not indepth yet and all appears well.

Good to hear - hope the wheels are OK enough to ride and yet still justifying the need for race wheels.

Good Luck!

Kim, glad to hear the bike is OK.  Good luck tomorrow!

Emma, I have a different view on the fuel belt.  I love mine.  I use the one that has 4 smaller bottles.  I only carry how many I need and can carry a mix of accelerade and water.  It doesn't bother me at all having it around my waist.  There's also a small pouch for money/key/whatever.

As for RoadID, it is a great thing to have.  I have the wrist strap.  Like Keri, I wish I'd gone for a color rather than boring black. They are available in wrist/ankle/dog tag or the kind to put on your shoe.  An EMT once told me they only look for your shoe if they think your foot might still be in it, so go for the wrist/ankle/dog tag version. You might want to check out the Pay It Forward section in the Classifieds as people often offer up the coupon they get when they order theirs.
