Kevlujohn - 2010-07-12 2:24 PM Ok...as a 1st time IM're I am trying to work out all of the unknowns...I read the info guide and have a few questions.

7/23 - 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm – Mandatory Athlete Meeting in the banquet tent at the Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds (obviously a must, right?)

7/24
7:00 am-10:00 am – Gatorade Bag Check-in, Mirror Lake. Representatives from Gatorade will be on hand to watch your gear and to give away Gatorade products.
(Is this where I drop off all of my transition bags and Special Needs bags?  If so, can I get to them throughout the day?)

10:00 am-3:00 pm – Athlete Bike and Gear Check-In at the transition area.
(Is this where I check in all of my bags along with my bike?  If so, I guess this is where I need to pack my water bottles with ice since we can't get in after 3:00 or can I bring my infinite the next morning as I enter transition on race day?  Also, can you get your bike out for a ride?)

7/25 -
5:00 am – Transition area in the Speedskating Oval opens/body marking begins on Main St. in front of oval.  (again, can I bring my water bottles this day?  How does a pump work, I need to hand it off to my wife right, it can't be in the transition area?

Sorry to be crazy type A..just nervous as we hit the two week mark!

Thanks!

1) The mandatory meeting isn't 'mandatory' but if you're asking the next questions, YES...go and be early.  I'm serious.

2) No, this is just an open swim time.  Gatorade, is sponsoring the pre-swim time.  It's not on race day.  Anybody can swim at this time.  Your wife too!  They are just there to hold your stuff for you and you get it back when you're done swimming.

3) Once you put your bike in transition the day before the race, it will NOT be allowed out until race day when you're on it for the bike.  That means any adjustments you need to make ensure they are done before 3 pm on the 24th (day before the race)
- You don't have to put any nutrition on the bike.  You will have access to it the next morning.
- You will drop off your transition bags (T1 and T2) bags.  You will NOT have access to these bags the morning of the race.  (That is how it was after WTC took over all the IM races).  You use to be able to access T1/2 bags morning of, not any longer.  But since you are going to the Mandatory Athlete meeting, you can ask that question.  (If you don't, I will be)

4) Show up race morning, put all of your water bottles onto your bike and pump up your tires.  You will also bring special needs bags and hand them off to the volenteers.

Those are great questions!

I thought Gatorade wasn't sponsoring the swim. I just looked at the site and didn't see the swim listed... Maybe it's me.

Where do we drop off SN bags? I know my way around, but I'm curious.

Thanks for asking all these questions. Might I add my own?

If we want to pump up our tires on race day morning, do we need to bring our own standing pump or are they somehow available in transition? Kinda don't want to have to cart the thing around and then hand it off to my family for the race...?

There will be official people with pumps plus there will be other athletes with pumps.  Get there early and you won't have to carry your own pump.

Special needs are dropped off before the race.  They will have, usually, a spot where you put your bags in a numbered box and they take them away to the SN's area.  The actual location of drop-off, I don't know, but it will be around transition.

In 2008, both Run & Bike special needs are along side of Mirror lake on the little run out and back. You drop off both special need bags there race morning there. It is maybe 5-7' walk from transition.

Do they email us when our numbers come out or do we just keep checking the race website?

Don't worry EVERYONE will post race # here...that is how you know the numbers have been published!

Aaaand another one: I carry a lot of my nutrition in my bike jersey . Should I put the food in my transition bag in T1? Or on my bike on race morning? (The food isn't all super compact).

Put it in your bag.  You cannot have anything at the bike.  In fact they will try to bring everyone's bikes to the center on race day so you can just run by and pick it up in the aisle.

Which made '08 even more interesting since it was a mud pool by the time I got there.

I agree, however I like my own pump. I use it and then give it to my wife to take back to the condo. SN area is right beside Mirror Lake. Just a few min. walk from transition.

Imagine how ticked off my pump would be if I flew him half way around the world and didn't let him go to the "show!"  He's been there for me all year long, he'll get his shot and he'd be more than happy to help others as well.  He's that kind of pump.

For those of you staying outside of Lake Placid proper (anyone? Anyone? No? Just me?), how is your family planning on getting around that day? Parking in the lots outside of Lake Placid and taking the shuttle buses? Or parking in Lake Placid and just hanging out there all day?

My family and I are staying at the Keene Valley Lodge. Was thinking of having them drive with me into race start on the morning of, park there, see me off on the swim and the bike, then they could probably try to leave town and come back later on the shuttle...Bad idea? Good idea?

I'm getting close to asking anyone with the intestinal fortitude to step up, look at their training, and give an honest estimate of their finishing time, assuming "normal" weather conditions. You SHOULD be able to get it within 20min or so. I say we have a community prize, I'll chip in as well even though I am just a spectator, to whoever is closest.

I have a question about the athlete guide. It states that mandatory bike/gear retrieval is from 6pm to 12am on race day. What if I take the entire time until; midnight to finish, how am I going to get my gear by midnight if I am just crossing the line at the same time?

My family took the shuttle on and off.

We stayed on the course on the bike climb back into town about 12 miles out. We drove in before they closed the road race morning, parked and took the shuttle to transition. They stayed for the swim, and saw me on the start of the bike, then took shuttle back to parking lot and drove back to the hotel and timed it to see me on loop 1 & loop 2  then they went back to town as the road was open but hard to get through, parked and took the shuttle. I didn't see them again until I was on way back to town at end of the loop 1 at about mile 11.

I'd suggest you consider when you think you would like to see them. I wish I had seen them sooner on the run.

Then work on logistics when you get there. When you register and at the IM village they have some information booths. Talk to them and they will show you a map and which roads get closed when and where to park. There are some back ways to get around but only a couple as the three main ways into LP 2 get closed or limited traffic for much of the day for the race.

The way to Keene is one way and more challenging as it is the road the bike is on for both loops and closer to town on the run.  The road is open but limited traffic and get backed up a lot. We stayed the other way out of LP so I don't know the rules or tips to help them race day.

Hey Swishy,
From what I saw last year, the shuttle system works pretty well. I don't see why they would have any problems doing what you said. I took the shuttle in to volunteer and it was fine. The only problem I could see is if the shuttle parking lots are full, but there are a lot of them so your family would probably just be directed to another lot that was not full.

I have friends who are staying at a campground outside town and they are bringing their bikes to get around--always an option!

Scott, I have heard that you can designate someone else to come get your bike--there is some kind of wristband system and I have heard you get an extra one that a family member/friend  can use to get your bike if you are still out on the course. I am a noob at this so don't know this for sure--can anyone who's been there answer this?

Ok, we are staying about a mile and a half, so we'll probably walk or take the shuttle, but I'm not sure, my wife and friend are volunteering all day, so they will be busy! I think em73 (wife) will be at the finish line writing down numbers from like 6-9pm or so she'll be there.. she will also have the golden ticket if I finish after to wait for me

Times:
swim 1:15-1;25 -
T1: 7
Bike: 7:15ish - really no idea
t2: 6
Run: 5ish?

I'm hoping to break 14 or so, I'm not stressed about it, this is the first one, as I want to finish, next one, we'll see

When you register you get a little card that allows someone else to get your bike. Save that card, fill it out and give it to a designated person if you want them to get your bike and T1 and T2 bags. I believe that person need to have ID along with the card.
