Swishy
not that I can help answer your questions but you aren't alone.  I'm staying just outside Ausable Forks - from sat to sat anyway.  My parents will be over from UK.  My hubby won't get up that early so my dad is going to drive me in.  I'm hoping to get quite close and then if he can't park he can go out and park at shuttle.    I'm hoping he can get back out after my swim so he doesn't have to stay all day.
I'm also hoping he (and the rest of my family) can get back in easily enough later so I will see them on the run and they will be there when I finish.
Last time I did this (2007) I drove in with another athlete and we parked on a side road and just walked about 5-10mins to transition.

swishyskirt - 2010-07-12 5:19 PM Aaaand another one: I carry a lot of my nutrition in my bike jersey . Should I put the food in my transition bag in T1? Or on my bike on race morning? (The food isn't all super compact).

Do what you have been doing in training.

If you have put it on your bike, then do that (ie Bento box, taped to the frame, etc)
If you have been putting it in your bike jersey, then put it in your T1 bag and fill your pockets in transition before heading out to your bike.

No worries.  Just do what you have in training.

As others have mentioned, you get a green ticket that someone can use to pick up your gear.  Even if you plan on winning the race and being just fine, Give that ticket to someone!

You don't know what can happen, but more importantly, it allows you to be rightfully lazy after the race.  You can sit there and your Sherpa's can pick up all of your crap.  So don't hold onto the ticket thinking, "I will get my stuff, no worries".

And even if you take till midnight and you get carted away, they are not going to keep your bike, etc.  Postive thoughts people.

So, what are YOU doing new for race day?

I just ordered a new bike jersey and a new run jersey - I should have them this weekend to try out, but still

My tri shorts are in quite the sorry state. They're about 2.5 years old (maybe older?). The elastic grippy stuff around the legs is just shot and now they like to ride up my legs while I bike. I really, really want to buy a new pair for the race, but gah! This sport is so flippin' expensive!! Anyway, if I miraculously find some amazing deal (any suggestions?), that will be my one "new" thing for the race. As you're not supposed to do ANYTHING new for race day, right?

Also, thanks for the replies about the shuttles and such. Sounds like I can have them do what I initially planned. Get as close as possible on race morning, hang out for the start, then leave after I get on the bike, then come back and use satellite parking lots + shuttle to get back in so they can see me on the run.

I told them they should go back to Keene or go for a hike while I'm on the bike and then come back for the run and the finish.

Mostly, I don't want to super inconvenience them--yes, I am having them come watch me do a 13+ hour race at a location 5 hours away from their homes, and yes, I do see the irony of that statement--and also, selfishly, I don't want to have to worry about them while I'm racing.

Thanks Marvarnett for your answers!  You made things more clear.  And yes, I think I will be all ears at the meeting...

Thanks for all of the info and everyone's great questions.

Hey Marvarnett,  just to clarify...I should put all of my gels/fignewtons,etc in my T1 bag but not my bottles, right?  I can bring my bottles fresh from the hotel fridge the morning of the race.  I only ask b/c people have spoken at lengths about wrapping their bike bottles in ice contraptions.

Thanks!

One other piece of advice is to bring a large trash bag when you check in your bike. Use it to cover your handlebars and seat after you rack it up. This will keep it dry overnight if it rains or if there is a significant dew in the morning. You can remove it when you go to add your bottles, pump your tires, or add your nutrition to your bike in the morning after you get body marked.

I think those ice contraptions are more for run bike bottles or ones they are using for Special Needs.

You will have access to your bike on race morning.  So anything that needs to be put on your bike, bring with you that morning.

Just like in training.  If you have stuff in your jersey pockets have that in T1.

Can I ask a silly question about this piece of advice, because I've seen it over and over at every race I do. And I am truly not trying to sound rude or anything- just honestly curious. Personally, when I come out of the swim, I am soaking wet, so as soon as I jump on my bike, it too, gets soaking wet- the handle bars and the seat. Why cover it with a trash bag, if I'm going to jump on it, soaking wet?

I've never understood the trash bag either, glad you asked!

Agree that the seat part is probably not needed, but I do like to keep the tape on my bars dry. When mine get wet they get a little slimy and slippery. My hands are dry in transition. Agree that the seat will get wet with your suit.

Well after Day 12 of a wicked wicked case of Poison Ivy & just starting to finally turn the corner, I called Devlins to have them rebook my room.  They did!  So if I still come up, I need to find a place to crash from Fri-Mon.  So we'll see.  Would love to see a bunch of you crush it...KQ...& just have some fun up there, even if I don't race.

My something "new" = sleeveless suit.  It dawned on me at OWS last night that I could ask to borrow one from a fellow club member! Duh me! I've been half stressing about roasting like a Thanksgiving turkey on race day in the water in my full sleeve suit.

I'm going to borrow it for next Monday's OWS, try it at LP once or so before the race and... ta da! There we go!

Also, I don't know why I bothered posting my bib number. I'm not sure who cares, but it IS pretty exciting.

Hey, who's going to the dinner on Friday night? Is it like a big 'ol pasta dinner? Is it worth the $30 a ticket and dragging the family to? I'd love to meet the whole lot of ya!
