We made the run from Seattle to Kodiak Island to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians to Hawaii to Oakland. We had 45' seas Christmas day in the Gulf of Alaska. But that wasn't nearly as scary as leaving Oakland. The freaking fog was so thick you couldn't see a damn thing but the harbor pilot said good to go and off we went. A ship that size and we never saw the bridges but we sure could hear them. Crazy!!! fattyfatfat - 2012-11-13 6:21 PM I'll be there with pompoms and mace!!! Wine, too. ;-) Hahahahaah!!!!! I'm with Linda on her thoughts on Oakland... there are some very nice areas in the hills, but in general Oakland = ick to me. Napa was my very first marathon back in 1998!! I don't know if it's the same course, but back then it was a super gradual downhill the entire way (very gradual). Torture on the quads the last miles, but then what isn't?! (Had to check that item off my to-do list before we started having babies, ha!) Vancouver sounds super nice -- LOVE Stanley Park. And my kids LOVE Canadian vacations, and we didn't make it to Victoria this summer... but honestly I like racing w/o my family. We'll see. We are in Hawaii for a week in April, so I need to consider that when considering spring races. Was also considering Eugene, as I've heard great things about that course/race and I have a long-lost friend who's been bitten by the running bug encouraging me to run there. Decisions, decisions. First I gotta make it through winter and see how my legs and motivation feel. It's all about Keeping Things Fun and Doing What I Want and Not Regretting Entering Races. |

No racing this weekend. I'm plotting '13, but don't have it all figured out yet. It's going to be fun, though! Some people think Thanksgiving is about the bird, but I know it's really about the pie. Apple, pumpkin, mushroom, whatever. Yum! Good luck, racers! |

No racing but it's not possible to have a favorite Thanksgiving recipe. I LOVE IT ALL!!!!! Mmmmmmmm. Julia, you'd do well in our house, as we do the pies up right. Always have pumpkin, and then I love to make some of Granny Hupfeld's apple cream pie. Soooooo good served warm with homemade ice cream -- YUM!!! And I make an awesome turkey pot pie with turkey leftovers! (That's after the turkey-vegetable soup with dumplings, of course!) I love the perfect bite of turkey with mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy. When you get all of the ratios right it's just heaven on earth. YUM!!!!!! Fatty, get over the Sunday race thing. Take Monday off. |

Haven't given a lot of thought to '13 yet, other than my training schedule. Looking forward to the journey. I love everything about Thanksgiving. The crispness of the air, the smell of burning leaves, the food, football, and most especially, that it marks the beginning of the Christmas season. As for a favorite recipe, I'd have to go with mushroom pie.

If you're not racing, what's your favorite Thanksgiving recipe? tradition? No racing this weekend, but starting to think about next year. My friend signed up for the Triple T in southern Ohio. Have you heard of this race? It's insane! A sprint on Friday, two Olympics on Saturday (the first is in normal order and the second in reverse order) and a HIM on Sunday. I chickened out of the whole thing, but did sign up for just the HIM. Should be fun! I'm a vegetarian, so Thanksgiving food is all about the sides! Roasted brussels sprouts are probably my favorite. Or the wine! |

'95 I was pregnant with kid #3, the Raider fan. HA!! the fog hides some of the scarier stuff..... I'm a little bit behind in this conversation, but what's up with all the Oakland haters? Oaktown (as we affectionately refer to it) is beautiful. Okay, not really, but it's safe for a marathon or half marathon. We can outrun all of the crime! The fog is a part of my daily existence! We love hearing the foghorns even if nowadays they are just for fun. (that's what they tell us: they just set them off to keep us happy) The best Sunday night treat is driving back from the South Bay (Linda's neck o' the woods) on a summer day (90F+) and seeing the fog just after the airport on the way home, the sigh of happiness, knowing that we'll rest well in a nice cool house! I love living here. 60F at my outdoor crossfit class this morning at daybreak. Have I mentioned how much I love it! Shorts and a t-shirt. (non-triathlete clothing which is such a joy!) Lifting weights and doing ridiculous things like throwing medicine balls in the air, sliding a 10lb weight across the lot while walking on our hands, burpees, etc...with the GG Bridge in the background? Pretty awesome! Have a great humpday, folks!

I am very likely going to do the same races I did last year: 2 Olys and 1 HIM. I want to take my training up another notch and improve my times. IM in 2014. I only get to the US for T-day every 10 years or so. I love all the T-day foods, but my favorite is a sausage based stuffing. Fresh brussel sprouts roasted (not boiled until they're soft) are great, but then again, I also like beets. Finally...I too was an Oakland Raiders fan when I was growing up. They were really good back then....Daryle Lamonica, Ken Stabler, Fred Biletnikoff, George Blanda and coach John Madden. |

Anyway, the notification email said we would get refunds in 30-45 days. I am still waiting on mine...and don't think I haven't tried. They always respond to my emails and are very nice in the response (nice, but their excuses are BS). Bottom line...I haven't seen any $.
