OK. I did the race. It was tough and I did not make the cut-off time. The third time the aid people on the course asked me if I wanted a ride back, I finally said "yes" because it did dawn on me that the offer wasn't for me, it was for them to be able to clear the course. So, I "only" did 12.06 miles that took me 3 hours 50 minutes. I am not unhappy. Not particularly happy about the result, but pleased with myself that I tried and now I have 12 more miles in my training log and my Garmin tells me that I burned 1230 calories. I wouldn't have gotten that staying home.

Thank you for all the words of support. They made the difference and got me out to the mountains.

I tried to include a jpg of the elevation profile, but it didn't work. How do you do that?

You RAN 12.06 MILES ALL AT ONCE!!!  That's so awesome!  I don't think I'll ever be able to run for 3 hours!  Damn, I'm impressed!

Holy, @#^$*&!! Leah!  I just looked at the elevation profile and that's one helluva course!  (Somewhere between miles 7 and 10 I would have been brought to tears. Seriously.)  Flat course, you could have killed that cut off time.  Amazing job!

I hope you're not too sore today and are having a relaxing day off.  You definitely deserve it!

Wow Leah! I'm so impressed. Glad you went out there and raced. I think you have a valid gripe with the 10 mile water station not being open when you got there (I'd be just as ticked). You should be proud of yourself.

You have to understand that with me the word "run" has a very loose meaning.  I include in the concept of "run" running, hiking, walking - anything done on two legs, differentiating it from biking and swimming or anything else.   Even my regular street runs are done in run/walk - how many minutes of each depends on where I am in my training.

I could not "run" for three hours, but with a combination of running and walking, I can do it.  I heartily recommend it to anyone, but particularly to people starting out with a running program.

Thank you everyone for your words of support.  I was stiff yesterday, but OK today, although at yoga this morning I could feel my quads in some of the early poses, but by the time I was fully warmed up, I didn't notice anything.

Hi everyone! I just spent a few minutes catching up on everyone's news. Major props to Leah & Darren on your long runs. Leah, my jaw hit my chest when I saw that course profile. Walk/run or whatever that is impressive.

Lisa-bummer about your job. Hopefully something will come your way soon.

I have one thought about the self talk stuff.  I have made a vow to myself that I will never say or think to myself something that I would not say out loud to a friend. It helps me to keep the negative stuff out of my head and feel better about what I can do. Have a great evening everyone.

i am a HUGE fan of the RUN/WALK

as excepted i was over-served from the bar(s) last night and am 'a little' rough around the edges today so my 5 mile run was scattered with walks, H2O breaks, and bathroom breaks.... but i'll log 5 miles in my blog. The best part is Joan Benoit Samuelson congratulated me through my headphones for the longest distance with the nike+ !! woo hoo

mina - it'll be a couple more days until i get it loaded up in our challenge speaking of, anyone that does have nike+ feel free to search the challenges for my Double Ironman Run and join up!!

Today was a weird day for me...I slept a TON last nite and actually felt really rough all day, a nagging headache that would not go away. Fast forward to my trainer ride in the afternoon and now I feel fantastic! Training is MAGIC!!!!

Whats on tap for Monday? I have a long run planned...I'm stuffing myself with pasta as we speak......

I once got rid of a nasty headache with a couple excedrin migraine and a run   Yes, training helps a lot of things.

My plan for Monday is an early run and a late trainer ride.  Probably around 3.4 mile run and 45 min ride.

Tuesday morning is swim but I get my BLUE fit in the evening   I think the most they may do is raise the saddle a smidge otherwise it feels perfect for my size (an amazing thing since it was built as a surprise for me)

I have that problem too, sleep to much gets me out of sinc, it feels soooooo good though. It's just like eating the wrong stuff or drinking too much. Also, sleeping too much gives you less waking hours to get all you need done in. Thats my theory anyway.

Have a great run.

Yeah the more I think about this the more pissed I am. And running out of food, what type of bargain basement run was this. I understand running out of the good food, but no food, like not even a bagal or a bruised banana.

Hello all! I had the BEST RUN OF MY LIFE this morning....my pace was faster than the half mary I did in September despite the fact that this was a VERY hilly route ( the half was flat as a pancake).

I'm calling this progress!! Yippee!! Will celebrate with much cake....my baby turned 10 today so trust me, there will be much cake!

Congrats on the great run!  Have a piece of cake for me, too... virtual cake is all I've earned so far

So, DH and Helen with the breakthrough runs... I want one of those!  My last two runs were less than super fun - this am was my fault (too much party makes for a tough morning run!) but the last one was just one of those things.  Sometimes they're great for me, and sometimes every step feels awful.  But I finished em, and that's quite an accomplishment, I think.  One cool thing on my Saturday 5miler was that I got a high five from a random runner!  That little gesture made my day and really gave me enough 'mental legs' to finish what I set out to.  And I know, just from running enough in the past, that some days they just don't feel great, but they definitely don't get better if you stop.

One little back-of-the-mind goal for me is to rely less on the gadgets.  It's so silly, but a combination of feeling crappy this morning and then finding that my pedometer wasn't recording almost made me turn around and go home.  As if without the data it wasn't going to be worth it or without a gague I just wasn't doing it right.  How silly!!!!!!  I also need to incorporate some time goals rather than set my accomplishements on mileage alone.

BigDH - 2009-01-12 11:05 AM  I am going swimming Friday. Got to get my January swim in.

Just curious-- if you only do one a month, how long are you thinking about?  Any special focus on form or drills?  Or just get in and do it?

I originally said I would do a biweekly, but the pool was so relaxing that I think I may have to do more than that.
