Artemis - 2010-01-08 10:08 AM Today is finally Friday!!  What are your plans this weekend?

I'm planning to bike tomorrow on the trainer and run 4 miles on Sunday.  I think I'm going to suck it up and run outside.  I'm also considering going to a hot yoga class, but we'll see.  I might save that for Monday on my "strength/stretching day."

The Olympic Tourch is coming to my fair city tomorrow for the Tourch Relay this weekend so I'm hoping to get out to part of it at some point!!
Oh... and for working out... tomorrow is a 1.5 hour rip and ride session (45spin/45weights) and if the back is ok, maybe a little run on the treadmill.  And Sunday -- FINALLY I will get my butt back in the pool for the first session with the mulitsport club for a 1.5hour swim session.  (hopefully I don't sink -- it's been over a month since I've been in the pool! )

Kathy, I am so sorry for your loss.

Artemis - 2010-01-07 7:40 AM We're one week into the New Year!!  How is everyone doing?

I'm doing ok with running the miles in my training plan, but I'm having so much trouble with deciding what to do as far as my workout goes on my days I don't run.  I really think I need a very specific training plan set out for me in advance.

Yesterday was a bad day for me.   I ended up spending a lot of time on the phone with our bank straightening out fraud on our checking account.  I was so upset by the end of the day - the bank has been a nightmare to deal with and all I want is to get our money back.  I had already decided not to work out that morning, but I should have gone anyways to relieve some stress.

Karen, Sorry to here about your misfortune with your bank.  I have been through that with one of mine.  And like you as soon as they got it straightened around I left and went to another bank.

Artemis - 2010-01-10 5:21 PM I ran outside today.  It was a lot chillier than I thought!  I definitely needed another layer.  Oh well, I made it through and I'm mostly thawed now.

I'm planning on a predawn run tomorrow; it's predicted to be about 19F.

Stay warm!  That sounds really cold.

Laughing .... oh... what different worlds we live in!!  Atho I TOTALLY agree... that 19F does sound cold to run in (you couldn't pay me).... that is warmer than our high of -10C was today..... and we were sooooo happy.... ALL the runners in Regina were outside for their runs today - after all, it was 20C warmer than it has been for the past month!

Yeah.... I need to move!

Oh wow - that is too cold.  It got down to about 10 here over there weekend, it hasn't been that cold here in 7 years.

Thanks - I think everything is straightened out with it.  Got all our money back, so I'm going to a new bank tomorrow.  I had filed a police report, and found out the details of it all today. My account number was used in a Walmart in Green Bay, no copy of a check kept, no video of suspect because they checked out in optical department, and they bought more than $1300 worth of phone cards.  Amazing that people will do this sort of thing.

This week I plan to run 4.5 miles tonight, 4.5 miles Wed, and 7 on Saturday.  All will probably be on the treadmill.  Not sure what I will do in the off days yet.

Only in Walmart...amazing that $1300 worth of phone cards didn't arouse any suspicion. Getting it fixed must be a weight off your shoulders though.

It's OK -- I'm going to be a cheater and change my goals too, and just try to get in 6 workouts a week for the rest of the month.  Grad school has been eating my sanity and I can't deal with everything all at once.

Hi guys.  Sorry for being MIA for like a week -- school has been totally insane.  In the past week, I have (1) decided that I don't want to stay in research for the rest of my career,  (2) been talked down from quitting my Ph.D., (3) applied for Teach for America after I defend my thesis, (4) written most of a manuscript and a mid-year progress report, and (5) actually gotten some science done.

Workouts have, understandably, suffered.  I managed to get in 3x runs and 2x swims last week, but I didn't bike at all  This week, I'm back on the wagon and actually made it to spinning class at 6 AM.

Time to flee for grant-writing class -- glad to see that other people seem to be making good progress.

Well I feel like I'm the closest to the start line in our collective tri training. But all that aside, I have managed to fit in all my workouts for the past 10 days and have only had to cut a few short. Here's my plan for the week:
Mon - Swim: 8 x 25 drills; 6 x 100 base; Walk 27min, run 3min DONE
Tues - Lift weights, bike 2 mi DONE

Wed - Swim: 8 x 25 drills; 6 x 100 base; Walk 27min, run 3min, hopefully a yoga class too
Thurs - lift weights (this is my rest day)
Fri - Swim: 8 x 25 drills; 6 x 100 base; bike 2 mi
Sat - walk 27, run 3
Sun - bike 2mi

So I know this might be a page or two late, but about Zumba...funny story.

So my best friend in Nashville attends Zumba every Saturday morning. I had been to the class before, taught by someone else and didn't care for it. She convinced me to go with her anyway. We show up and get corralled into the gymnasium by all the other women attending this class. There had to have been at least 70 women ther (and the occasional guy). They had these giant speakers/sound system and some of the songs that were being played were downright dirty. But there were some grandmas rocking out to Ludacris and the Black Eyed Peas like nothing I've ever seen before. Just picture your grandma doing a one-hand windmill to spank some tail.

Needless to say, I was insanely sore, partly from the Zumba, partly from the laughing.

By the way, does anyone have a good core (abs) workout for training? I am noticing I can do the distances, but have no strength because i'm flabby in the middle.

That is funny - that's what the class I went to was like.  There was an older couple right in front of me; both this husband and wife were just trying to keep up and I couldn't help but look over everytime we were supposed to spank the air...it's cute, and it makes me happy to see the gramdmas and grandpas rockin out!

misfit_1 - 2010-01-11 10:37 AM I know it's kinda like cheating, but I'm going to change my goals for the month...I think I increased my running too much/too soon and am paying for it.  The knee is starting to hurt, my shins are being tempermental as well as my feet...so although I'm still planning on following my running training plan as much as possible, I'm not going to push and I know I won't be able to make that half marathon distance in under two hours by the end of the month like I had wanted (maybe it was too lofty a goal!).

That being said, I'm going to concentrate more on my swimming, and still have that 4 lap goal.  I'm going to replace my running goal with an easier one of making sure to do atleast a couple sessions of strength training each week.

...and keep my Peaches on my calendar!...

It's not cheating at all!!  It's way better to reduce your goal and stay healthy than try to make your goal and hurt yourself.  You want to rest at the beginning of any injury, not the end!

You might not make your half marathon goal this time, but you can do it next time.

There are a lot of things you can do for core training.

This thread links to a core training video done for cyclists and triathletes.

The current issue of Runner's World also has a pretty good-looking core exercise routine.

I personally think that yoga is a great way to develop excellent core strength and stability -- although I've slacked off in my own practice since taking up tri training, the core strength I've gotten from yoga has really helped me.

My favorite exercises to do are stuff that involves challenging your balance as well as your ab strength, because that's how you use your core in real life -- exercises involving a swiss ball or Bosu trainer are really helpful for this.

Also, don't neglect your lower back musculature when doing core training.  If you just focus on abs, you will most likely set yourself up for injury due to core imbalance.

So I've learned there's nothing quite as immediately effective for getting over (or succumbing to, depending on your POV) self-consciousness in a bathing suit than having to haul yourself out of the pool and walk the length of it to the locker room in front of the tanned and taut swim team, waiting for practice.

At least I learned the fear of a crowd wasn't enough to derail getting in every possible lap, either that or my self-preservation instinct to delay the humiliation. Either or.

On a positive note, in trying to get every possible lap in before the 3pm cut-off, because I was late I did all my laps consecutively without breaks - and it was only 100 meters less than my race distance.
