zee744 - 2011-01-03 9:59 AM Need some suggestions. I have a pretty busy schedule and have 29 weeks to train for IMLP. If I didn't mention it before, I work two jobs. Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm at my FT job and Mon & Friday 6pm-11pm and Saturday 4pm-11pm at my PT job (yes, student loans are a real pleasure!!). I also have an hour+ of drving total to/from work each day. Last time I trained for IMLP I had soooo much more time on my hands. I typically run on my lunch for 30min every day on the TM. Sunday, Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday I clearly have time for extended workouts. It comes down to getting some in on Monday and Friday. Monday will most likely be a "rest day" with just my short lunch run, if I feel like it.

My questions:

1) Should I try and get up Friday before work for a workout? It would probably be a run since I won't drive out of my way to the pool in the morning and I won't subject the other apts. in my house to a 6am trainer ride on my mag+. I'm not a morning person AT ALL. I have a hard enough time getting to work for 9. Leading me to...

2) How do you drag yourself out of bed in the morning? Who wants to be my wake up call/bring me my coffee? Laughing Laura didn't seem too fond of the idea Tongue out Cream and sugar in my coffee or a seasonal latte from Starbucks will suffice.

3) I'm thinking about only running on my lunch 2-3 days a week with the other 2-3 days being a lift. Thoughts? I've been weight trainging for 12 years, so I'll be able to pick that up no problem.

Be prepared for follow up questions. Thanks!!

My coffee maker is on a timer. It starts brewing at 4:30... between those enticing glug glug sounds and the marvelous aroma... I just get up smiling. But not until 5:00

I posted this in the Triathlon Talk thread, but in case you don't visit that thread, I thought you might enjoy the laugh!

My 8th graders always make me laugh somehow--either intentionally or unintentionally.  Today was an unintentional day.  As I always do I have posted in my classroom my next upcoming race, what it is and the number of weeks away--I then count down my training weeks.  Today was the first day back from break so the students could see my IM Boise 70.3 countdown.  Underneath IM Boise 70.3 I listed:
1.2 mile swim
56 mile bike
13.1 run
A couple of the boys were standing there reading the countdown and one looked at me a quizzically and said "I don't get it, Mrs. Reamer--which one of these three races are you doing?"  During my laughing fit I managed to get out "All of them!"  He looked at me like I was nuts and sat down.  Laughing

Wow! Great before and after pics.  Way to go guys!

Getting up in the am:   I've been getting up before work for the past 3 years.  The alarm goes off at 4:45.  I allow myself one snooze button wack, so it's out of bed at 4:55 since I have to be at school by 7:45/8:00. I guess my advice is consistency, and an early bedtime. It will SUCK big time the first few weeks.   But for me I found eventually it did get easier when I did it every day and stuck to it.  But, it comes with a price.  It is hard for me to stay up past 9 and when I do I am totaled the next day.

And Kim, I hear ya on those germs at school.  I teach little ones with developmental delays.  Not a day goes by when I don't get a full face spray from a sneeze or cough.

X2 on the awesomeness of the before and after pics!!

I agree on consitency with waking up early.  When I'm working days I have to be at work by 7am so it's up at 4:45-5am for short workouts. I'll even sometimes have to workout after working 12.5 hr days. Then I literally go to bed right when I get home!! It does get easier...

x whatever we're up to on the before and after photos.

I also get up early everyday to workout.  I does become easier after a while, but you do lose your ability to stay up at night.  If I had to work nights or otherwise could not get to bed til after midnight, I would not be getting up at 4:45!

How do you drag yourself out of bed?  Difficult some days but goals are the key for me.  Races don't wait for me to get ready. Ready or not, they will fire a gun and I will be in the water.  One of my former mentor group buddies had a signoff that said it all;

I do what another man won't do today so I can do what another man can't do tomorrow.

Down for a treadmill run with speed work and strength work with yoga/stretching/foam rollers after.

BTW, did I mention we were out shooping and I decided as a lark to try on 32 inch pants.  THEY FIT!  Tight for work, but they did fit.   I bought 33s. Wearing them now   That is down from a 50 inch waist.  When I tested at the local university, I had a 13% body fat rating...considered "learn."  Doing the math, I had 8 pounds to shave for 10% which is the lower limit they recommend for endurance athletes because the fat stores are what we draw on over time.  I think I've made the 10%.  I will weigh one of these days.

I drag myself out of bed by looking at the clock and saying "Oh $hi*, I'm gonna be late for work!"

My sleep is all messed up as I don't actually get home from work until about 11:30pm on Mondays and can't wind down until typically 1am at the earliest.

Like the quote!

I know the feeling.  I don't get home until 12:00pm and it takes some time to chill out from work.  It also depends on the type of calls I had on my shift.

It looks like it is gonna be some early mornings and late nights for you.

ricmachado - 2011-01-03 12:02 PM I was really looking foward for today and start the training, right after the kids went to school, I was 30 min into a run when a call from work came in and I had to cut it short.

At least started something, just not as long as I wanted.

30 min of running is better than 30 min of watching T.V .

Iam thinking about attempting a HIM this coming fall.  Does Anybody have any input on nutrition while competing?

I have heard that some use Infinit and that only takes care of caloric intake.  How many calories should a person take in while racing?  Also does a person have to take in water as well for the hydration or does the water in the Infinit or other brand of nutirion suffice?

I'm have been trying to read up on this some but not sure how it all fits together. Any help is appreciated.

If anybody gets a chance.....stop by my wife's/ kerri (krichard) training log and help me keep her inspired....please.  She just recently started  training.

This past year she stood behind me while I caught the tri bug.  She has helped me loose 55 lbs over the past year.  She stayed up late cooking healthy meals , since I eat every 3 hours.  Did I also mention that she takes care of our 2 kids on a nightly basis while I'm working.  In this whole process over the past year she also quit smoking.

I tried to get her into our tri group but she refused to do so at this time.

I would greatly appreciate the help in keeping her motivated.

RunFasterMommy - 2011-01-02 1:54 PM Lesson learned today:  I've heard that bike trainers are often either harder or easier than biking outside, depending on many variables.  Well, I've been on the trainer a lot lately, and find my "comfortable" pace is around 15- 16 mph and that a little discouraging to me.

Well, a friend came over today, she just got a new bike, so we took to the streets.  Holy cow it's way easier outside. For the same effort, I ride easily 17-18 mph. Go figure.   I need to get outside more!

That was the highlight of my day Laughing

Awesome on the bike ride!!!!

WAY TO GOOOOOO! Great job, I'm glad your bike ride felt so good. Keep after it.

You'll have to figure out what works for you.  I think most people can handle 200-250 calories per hour.  Obviously, not enough and you risk a "bonk" (which is really, REALLY scary), but too much and your stomach shuts down.  Just because you can consume 250/hour training doesn't mean you can consume 250/hour racing (nerves, higher intensity => shutdown & GI distress).  You're probably in the range of 600 calories/hour during the longer races, so you may run a 1500 calorie deficit during the event only consuming 200 calories/hour, but you've got a fair amount already stored pre-race.

I'm lucky enough to take in about anything, so I live off the course.  Ultramarathons are really an outdoor buffet with ham and cheese sandwiches, twizzlers, M&M's, trail mix, chips, pretzels, cookies, yum, yum!!

I really don't do much "engineered food" (gatorade, GU, etc.).  I do the occasional powerbar or clif bar, but take snack crackers (Austin/Lance), granola bars, nutri-grain bars, payday candy bars, bananas, etc. on my rides.  If I eat ahead of time, I can do a 3 hour run with just a bottle of sports drink and then water.  I do 2 hour runs with just water.

stephsprint - 2011-01-03 6:55 AM Gamer! you're just getting fitter and faster! Also, there will be good days and bad days. I find that lighter clothes make it easier to run. Even tighter sleeves can be difficult. Loose layers are best. Nothing cotton next to the body...ends up a wet rag.

A spin class followed by a treadmill run would be an indoor brick, yes?

I run and then do a spin class & it works great for me.  It hasn't been an issue.  Are you going to spin first, is that your plan?

I'll add her to my friends list and pop over on occasion.  As a complete newbie I know and understand how those little inspires help so very much.

It's the people who support us who make what we do so very possible.  Ya we put in the sweat, the pain and the effort, but it's the people who believe in us, help with the extra chores so we can go run "again", deal with our mood swings when a training goes bad and listen to us babble endlessly about todays run, or tomorrows swim that make it a little easier.

I think it's great that you want to give her the support she has given you.

Happy New Years All! Just got back from xmas vacation last night and am still struggling to read all the posts I missed!  I think I have 5 more pages to go!

I had my coldest run ever today! 17 degrees out but with the north wind the wind chill factor was 2. I was pretty uncomfortable, will definately have to put more layers on next time.

Congrats to all who have signed up for races!!!! I am still trying to figure out my schedule, but you all are definately a motivating force to get my butt in gear!

Here are a couple before/after shots for people interested in weight loss.

Before would have been 2000-late 2004.  After was June 2005, during the backpacking trip.
