In all seriousness Paul, without trying to be a smart-a$$, I really have no idea about the gearing on my bike.  My LBS is somewhat less than helpful, and I basically bought the bike they had that I liked (i.e., the only one in my size and price range).

It happens to be a triple, so I know I've got plenty of gears to work with, but I couldn't tell you what gear I ride in at any given time.  This is probably a factor of many things, including my basically novice status, as well as the fact that everything here is pancake flat.  Thus, I spend most of my time on the middle ring up front, and whatever works in the back based on wind, desired cadence/HR, etc.  If you were riding next to me and said "what gear are you in?" I couldn't tell you.

But yes, I can change a flat...although even that has frustrated me from time to time.  I guess I am the epitome of "beginner triathlete."

You guys are killing me.  I refuse to believe people doing an Ironman don't know what gears they have.  I'll just assume you have all changed flats before.

I'm with you P.   In fact, this discussion is making my migrane come back.

I'm riding a compact crank 50/34 with a 12/25 cogset.  I think this is the right setup for me, based on what I've read about the course (a few 500 foot climbs and some rolling up and downs).  As a point of reference, I rode the Wildflower long course (which has, I believe, somewhat more climbing) in 3:11 or so.  Averaged about 17.5 mph.  Spent most of the climbs in 34/24 spinning seated.  I expect that's the plan here too.

In defense of the technically disinterested, however, a good friend of mine has no idea what gears he has and he'll put almost an hour into me on the bike.  I'm not even sure he knows how to shift.

I don't get flats anymore since I switched to the solid rubber tires like my kids had on their first bikes.

No worries.  The short hills are around 0.5 to 0.75 miles long at around a 6% grade.  The long hill is about 1.5 miles at around 5%.

That's what I like about riding my Big Wheel.  Filling the tube with slime is fun too.

Right now I've got the bike setup with 53-39 rings on the cranks and a 11-23 cassette. I've riden the Timberman and the Silverman on it before and so it definitely won't kill me on a 500 ft hill or two. That said, we'll see how I feel. I'll do some hill repeats on it in Manyunk this weekend and find out whether that's such a good idea. I may just throw the 12-25 cassette on to keep me honest on the bike and to stop me from toasting my legs by pushing a bigger gear than I should.

In defense of the technically disinterested, however, a good friend of mine has no idea what gears he has and he'll put almost an hour into me on the bike.

Isn't it just the case. I was asking a friend who is doing IM Moo about his new ride (2006 QR Lucero) when I got the "...???" answer to what kind of setup he had. We went out for a ride this morning and he had no idea what was on the bike when I asked him about it. I'd ask ..."What kind of wheels came with the bike? -> Answer: A front and a rear. How about the gears? Answer: Yep, got those too. Obviously he was partially playing around but he had absolutely no idea what was on the bike and how it was setup. I finally broke down and had to walk over to his bike and look for myself once we got done.

Hate to admit it, but I am exactly like your friend.  In fact, as I sit here right now, I can't tell you what kind of wheels are on my bike...or brakes, or shifters.  I do know my aerobars are Syntace C2s because I ordered them!

And T, quit trying to bait me into asking if those solid rubber wheels are really available...

What size air filter is on your car?  How much Ram/Rom does your computer have?  What is the R factor of your attic installation?  Who was the NBA, NFL, or MLB MVP from last year?  Who was on the cover of People magazine last week?  What gear are you riding in?

Yep, all questions that I could not answer.

How many more days until IMCDA?  25.

What size air filter is on your car?  - Ummm... "About yay big" (gesturing cluelessly with arms...not entirely sure what shape to gesture in, but I'm pretty sure it is round)

How much Ram/Rom does your computer have?  "My computer is not a Dodge...no Ram here"

What is the R factor of your attic installation?  "I think mine is actually PG-13"

Who was the NBA, NFL, or MLB MVP from last year?  "Not sure, but I'd be willing to bet he's been in jail at least once, is on steroids, has a paternity suit pending, and makes WAY too much money."

Who was on the cover of People magazine last week?  "Paul McCartney and his soon to be ex-wife"  (OK, I'm embarrassed that I know this one, but it is sitting here at my office.)

What gear are you riding in? "Whatever one will get me there."

IMCDA is indeed 25 days away...WHOOOOOOOOOOP!!

OWS in Lake CDA today!!  Take the stress level down on water temp.  It was very bearable at 5:50am when I got in!!  Little icecream headache at start but it subsided quickly.  Water is over 61 degrees and climbing!  Weather is hot coming up so should heat up even more.  Look for high 60's by raceday.  Water actually felt real good with the exertion, etc!!

23 days to go......WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

So what does 20 degree difference feel like? I think I can handle that...normally 82 here, possibly 62 there, ok I am there, I 'll take it.

And to the talk of gearing. You count the bumps on your cogs to figure out what it is, in other words 54 cogs on the big ring and 23 on the small with the front cog and then do the same in the back is that correct? At least that is what I thought. I think everyone will be fine with what they are use to riding, from what I can tell, there are no super steep major get up outa your seat and crank it out type of hills. I tend to use the look down and keep pedaling till I get to the top method, in whatever gear I need. It is usually available.

Are there one or two gatorade practise swims?

Hey guys and gals, forget about the temperature of the lake. How about the air temperature? That is what I am worried about.

Is it too much to ask for high 50's in the AM, low 70's in the afternoon?

Does any one know any good weather dances?

AG-

Keep practicing with the neoprene, but I will go take actual temp this weekend and shoot it out to everyone weekly from here on out!  You can decide then.  I had a local kayak store owner tell me this morning if the weather stays warm for a while then it may get close to 70!  No guarantees on weather or dances I know of!!

11-23 here. If it's in the high sixties I may just skip the wetsuit. I hate that damn thing.

I plan on wearing a short sleeved jersey for the bike. Anybody bringing something warmer to wear? 50's in the morning sounds really cold.

Also, I don't think I can eat one more Clif bar. Need to find a replacement-QUICK

I'm planning on changing in each transition so I have dry, comfortable clothes.  Tri shorts under the wetsuit for the swim.  Then change to regular bike shorts (more padding!!!) and short sleeve jersey for the bike.  Then change to DeSoto run shorts and short sleeve running shirt for the marathon.  Clean, dry shirt and dry socks in special needs.

Might add a couple minutes to transition times, but I think it will be worth the comfort.  Any of you IM veterans see any potential issues with this plan?
