OK

  • Who has started training?
  • If you haven't, when do you start?
  • What training plan are you using?

I start on Monday, Jan 9th

I am using Multisports.com's training plan this year.

I'm pretty excited to get things going again

I "started" at Thanksgiving but have racked up a lot of white squares due to the holidays and work (damn work!).  I'm pretty much over my training to train stage and will be hitting it fairly hard the next few months to get ready for California HIM.

I'm using an acclerated version of Gale Barhardt's 27 week plan so I will have a good amount of bike and run mileage in by the half.  I'm going to attempt to pile on the bike hours this year and let the swim and run work themselves out.

It sucks to be behind already when we are still 6 months away!!!

"IMCDA Are you ready?"  No, I'm not ready yet but I'll be good to go in about 172 days.

I wrote my own 25 week plan and started it on 1/2/06.  The first 6 weeks focus on high rep weights and swim volume (my weakest event).  The real training will not begin until mid-Feb (19 weeks to go), then the bike and run volume should start to grow.

Nope, not ready. (Seeking ye experienced triathletes for advice)

My original plan had been to start training December 1st (the IronFit 30 week plan). But I earned myself a hamstring overuse injury that became official in mid-November (lesson learned: pay heed to what your body is telling you; it's not just whining). So I thought, "Fine, I'll take a forced off-season and start with the New Year on 1 Jan (or 3 Jan, depending on how crazy New Year's Eve was!).

But over the holiday break, bad news from the massage therapist (confirming what I had been denying): the hamstring itself had healed, but now there was a "re-injury" in the tendons above/behind the knee. It could be another 4-6 weeks. I was crushed by the news.

Now it's time for Plan C.
I'm inside 30 weeks. I'm inside Roch and Frey's 27 weeks. Now I'm looking to pick up the BT.com 20 week plan which kicks off on 6 Feb. But here's my concern: endurance-wise, I know I'll be fine (not optimal, but fine). But is the hammy going to be ready to kick off IM training in 4 weeks?

A possible plan D: Bernhardt's 13 week plan?

So there you have it. As Madcow already knows, this has been weighing on me pretty heavily. I've even been scolded for working too hard in the pool by both massage therapists, so I'm relegated to 'easy' swimming (not that I'm a good swimmer at all). My spirits are down about warming the bench, and I'm getting quite nervous over the fact that IMCDA is my FIRST Ironman and I don't want to cut corners; I want to show up on June 25th 2006(!), confident that I've got the training under my belt to make a strong finish.

I would appreciate any and all advice/words of wisdom that you may have.

Am I ready now?  Nope.  Will I be ready on June 25th?  Not sure, but my coach says I will so I'm going to defer to her expertise.

  • I started right after T-giving
  • See above...
  • I'm using the plan developed for me by my coach (Cruella)

Are you going to the massage therapist as part of a physical therapy program or are you just going to someone who gives a good massage and calls it therapy?   Is she just saying “stay off it and maybe it will fix itself” or is the cause of the hamstring injury being addressed through strengthening, stretching, a change in biomechanics…whatever.  If she is not working on the cause of the problem then I would think about getting a second opinion at this point.

It sounds like you are going to be back to training around mid-February, 20 to 18 weeks out from IMCDA.  18 weeks really is a lot of time.  There are a lot of people that live in cold climate that can not really start training until March.  At this point I would not worry about any lost training.  When you do start training again, don’t try to make up for lost time or cut short your base building short.  It might be frustrating but take the time to get healed and then start your training.  Good luck.

Hi,

I was so looking forward to this as it would be first IM. I signed up the first day and was planning to do the Be Iron Fit 30 week plan.

Unfortunately, something happened where my arms have been numb off and on for about 3 months. MRI, X-Rays, and Carpal Tunnel testing were all negative. No one knows what it is so my P.T., who is a former triathlete, said it would be pushing it if I were to do IMCDA.

So, I wish you all the best of luck and I will be there to cheer you on. I have a couple of HIM's planned but it's just not the same.

This isn't really the place to post this but I figure you would all understand and I wish I could be there.

Best of luck all

I've seen two separate massage therapists: one where I live now (Abilene, TX) and one in my hometown (Austin, TX). The Austin guy is unquestionably better and also an experienced triathlete. Neither can pinpoint the exact cause of the injury. Chock it up to an overuse injury?

I first saw the Austin guy, who initially confirmed the injury and recommended weekly massage therapy to help it heal faster and correctly. Thus, I began seeing the Abilene therapist on a weekly basis. "Austin" diagnosed the re-injury last week when I was home for the holidays and has devised a very specific plan of attack to help it heal. (For the first two weeks, massage therapy 3x/week, alternating hard/easy, etc... Plus he has a rehab program for in the weightroom, stetching, ice/heat regimen, etc...) The Abilene therapist is trying to get me an appointment with a doc here in town for a professional opinion, so she's definitely being proactive, as well. She's also agreed to go along with "Austin's" game plan. On top of all that, I finally brought the Air Force in on the problem (I'm military), and they're ordering an MRI next week.... So between these 4 sources of information, hopefully progress will be made.

Thanks for your perspective as far as "18 weeks being a lot of time." I've run plenty of marathons before, so I know enough to get a feel for how close I can crop down a training plan and still finish the race. But a full IM? I have no experience database to draw from. Thus I appreciate your feedback.

At this point, I'm going to focus on being positive, getting healed, and then assessing what I've got to work with. In the meantime, any suggestions, inputs, advice, feedback, etc. are TRULY and GREATLY appreciated!!

Kendra-

Don't sweat it. Keep your chin up and know that there are other IM's on other days. It's taken me all week to reconcile that fact, but it's the truth. Good luck with diagnosing your arms; I wish you the best on that and on your other races this season.

Not ready yet.  Was sorta scheduled to start the 30 week training plan (IronFit) in December, but took some time off after the Seattle Marathon.  Kept some of the base training and still put on weight.   Finally got a trainer to use in the Garage (until I can sneak it and my bike into the house-need to figure out how to not get oil on the carpet).

Everyday I've got a thought of, "oh jeez, am I doing enough or doing it right?"

Big concern is to do long enough endurance training and to include nutrition correctly.  I don't want to get the craps or to bonk.

Tom...good topic, and HECK NO I'm not ready......yet.  Began my base training as soon as I hired my coach in late September.  He assures me I will be ready, so I will defer to him regardless of how worried I may get over the next few months.  My "real training" starts as soon as my 1/2 mary is over next Sunday.

I have started with the BeIronfit "competitive plan" in December and modified it quite a bit during the holidays!.  I am now following it fairly closely.  I haven't decided if I will be switching to the BT.com plan once I am inside the 20 weeks or somehow combine them.  Long time to go and a lot of training left to come.  Shouldbe interesting as I still have grad school classes and will also be moving countries in June.  The key, I think will be to stay injury free and to know when to listen to the body.

Yeah, as much as I would love to do some strength trtaining, there is NO WAY I can fit it in.  I think that my time is better spent on the road and in the pool.

I had some bowel distress today during my rainy run, (cheerios won't be part of my pre race meal).  This is one thing that I've never had a problem with during marathons, hope to keep it that way.        I've also never done an event in HOT weather, will cross that Rubicon in CDA.

I'll be starting the D3 Multisport 20 week plan (with a bit of tweaking to fit my work schedule) next Wednesday.  Am I ready?  No.  Will I be ready?  I hope so!

Stopped by the LTS.  Owner (who has many IMs completed) was very positive on what I have been doing.  Talked about the breakdown of each event (seems simple).  Talked about nutrition.  I'm anxious to get good weather so I can do some 3-4+  hour blocks and see how body reacts to certain foods.   The LTS owner was saying they never used the available Chicken Broth or Colas.

Which brings me to the conclusion, you really have to experiment and not concern yourself with what others do.  Guideline yes, but not absolute (vodka?)

Oh yeah, and My Commander in Chief gave me the go ahead for a bike.<img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>
