Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Question (no smart A$$ answers, please). Funny answers are ok! How do you know when you need more cushioning in your long distance shoes? I am second guessing myself on my decision to run the marathon in Saucony A4s. I know I don't want heavy shoes, but I'm thinking ones with a little more cushion may be better. Anyone running long distance in the Brooks Pure line? Ok two questions.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jackie, if you're used to more cushioning, don't change that for the marathon. It is always a compromise with weight, but for me cushioning would be more important. Fun competition this morning at the running club involving run to the beach, swim, 5k run out and back. It was done in pairs and we had to come back together. I don't know the swim distance, we just had to round one bouy. Cheating was allowed and even encouraged for fun. Fins, cutting corners, stealing shoes was rampant. The biggest cheats got Lance Armstrong drink bottle. 3 points today were well deserved (30k MTB commuting included). Don't worry about it Jackie. Just not that big of deal. Dance with the date that brung you. I've run two marathons in VFF's (no cushioning) and 1 in Newton racing flats (a little cushioning). You don't absolutely need cushioning. If you can do your long runs in the shoes you are currently using, you can do the marathon. Me. 6 mile run in 35 degree steady rain with run club through lots of slush. Had lots of fun, not uncomfortable at all. (CWX running tights, long sleeve technical shirt and tight technical jacket.) People in cars were literally shaking their heads in disbelief as we ran by. Goal is to bike 3 or 4 and swim 3 as well.I think you're kicking butt on your hansons plan! Seems like you're seeing real improvements in fitness? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ok, I am toying with a potentially stupid thought, and want to throw this out to see what the more expeienced runners think. I am 67.18 miles short of 1000 miles for the year with 2 weeks left. By the way I missed this, but I doubled last years run miles in November. I worked my miles back up and am supposed to do 26 this week and 27 next, leaving me 14 miles short of 1000. I am considering doing a series of short runs, below MAF, on my non-running days to make up the difference and give my ego (key word) a hug. Ernesto, Chris, others, what do you think or in the spirit of the Christmas story is this the running equivalent of "you'll shoot your eye out kid"? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Updating for the weekend, on Saturday I rode close to 40 with a different group out of a different place, and then drove to a race (criterium) where I got 2nd place after a thirty five minute breakaway. It was the highest power output ever for a workout, so pretty cool, and lost first place by about a bike and a half of distance. On Sunday I ran two hours, good weather. Last night I barely slept, got called out to work at 2:50AM (emergency). I'm sleeeeeepy!!!! Mitch Swim 3 - Bike 11 -Run 13 - Rest 2 - Total 27 Time 19:57:15 |

An extra 14 miles over two weeks, run slowly, isn't going to hurt you (knock on wood). Doesn't really matter how you do it. I would consider just adding an extra mile or two to your running days, and still taking the off days off. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In week 4 of my HM training and have a question. My plan calls for 4 runs/week. 2 short runs (@MAF), 1 middle run at pace, and 1 long run (this week 7 miles - goes up to 12 miles). According to the plan, the long run should be done 30-90 seconds slower than pace. This being my first HM, my first objective is to finish. BUT, the competitive person in me does have a couple of target times - goal 2: beating 2:20 (10:45 pace) - goal 3: beating 2:15 (10:15 pace). I am planning to start the race at 10:15 pace and assess at 6 miles (and every two miles after). I am training as if my race pace is 10:00. As of now, my pace runs have been at 10:00, and my long runs at 11:30. Questions: Should I try to do my long runs faster? 30-90 secs. slower than pace is a big gap. So far I finished the runs in fairly good shape, but are unsure about the benefits of increasing pace vs. injury risk. Maybe try 11:00 and see how it goes? Any general comments about strategy? Take into account that I plan to revisit race strategy closer to race time, once I can see how my training has been going. |

Up to last night there has been no training activity for me in two weeks other than starting a TRX class to get me through the winter. The ankle was feeling pretty good. No pain to speak of in about three days. I had been invited to a fun run with a bunch of my friends to celebrate the holiday, nothing stressful, very casual, very slow- "12k's of Christmas" theme. (drink and food item with each K completed) and decided I would go and see how things would feel. Well, I made it exactly 1k and had to pull up and stop running. I limped back to the house and started the ice therapy again. The pain in the ankle is back worse than before. I'm scheduling with an Ortho now. Hoping they don't put me in a boot. |
