Scottgreenstone, you are awesome. I have such respect for your honesty about things like being nervous  on the downhill and crying about the enormity of what we are doing, for the past year and this coming weekend.

Same for all of you who are shedding a few tears this week and during the race. You have all been so open about your fears and difficulties. This is truly a great group of people!

Yes!  My plan has me doing some 1.5 hr rides and a few 1 hr swims this week and I can't get myself to them...I am so ready to pack the car and be in Mirror Lake at 6:50 on Sunday...let's go!!!

Thanks Bryan, that post rules!!!

Yeah, Kevlujohn, I think I'm on the same plan you are with the workouts this week. But my legs are so sore and heavy that I'm skipping some of them, or just swimming instead. I figure I'm not going to add any more fitness at this point but if I keep working out on tired legs, that will tear me down before the race and I will regret it.

I'm with you, let's GO!!!

Well said, Bryan.  I'm seriously going to carry those thoughts with me on Sunday.  It's so true that the hard work is done and Sunday is the result of it.  Good, bad, or ugly, it is what it is.

Yeah, I'm just ready to head up there and get this sumbitch over with!

Inflammation & Pain:

My wife is an emergency room physician with a top New England Hospital (and before this, Dartmouth Medical School and UMASS residency). Her advice to me for managing inflammation and pain during IMLP is below. As always, check with your doctor as your situation may differ.

Anti-inflammation. Take two (2) 200mg of Advil (Ibuprofen) a day during Thu-Sat, after a meal. On Sunday, take two (2) 200mg at 6am and then another two (2) 200mg at T2. (So, put one pack of two capsules in pre-race bag, and put a second pack of capsules in T2 bag.)

Pain relief. Take two (2) Extra Strength Tylenol (Acetaminophen), which relieves mild to moderate pain from headaches, muscle aches, colds, sore throats, toothaches, backaches, etc. Take Tylenol at T2, if needed. (So, put one pack of two capsules in T2 bag.)

Like PennState said earlier, I know there's a lot that's been said about whether this is a good or bad idea, but just to offer some more information, here's a New York Times article on whether taking ibuprofen during a race is such a hot idea to begin with, as it doesn't appear to change an athlete's perception of pain, and it also seems to slow the healing of tendons and muscles after the exercise:

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/phys-ed-does-ibuprofen-help-or-hurt-during-exercise/

This sentence also sort of grabbed me:

The ibuprofen users also showed signs of mild kidney impairment and, both before and after the race, of low-level endotoxemia, a condition in which bacteria leak from the colon into the bloodstream.

Ick.

If you really want to take something, I'd skip the "Vitamin I"...Tylenol seems like the better idea here.

Anyway. No disrespect for anyone who wants to try this, but for me the risks do not seem worth it, especially if it doesn't really do a whole lot for you...

Another taper-itis sufferer here. Wow, a 1.5 hour ride. I don't know what's worse. Seeing that on my training plan four days before the race--or what my actual training plan says I should be doing. Which are ridonculously short workouts. Like, a 15 minute run. A 20 minute bike. Seriously. It takes longer to get ready than it does to do the workout. It's making it easier to want to blow them off...still doing them. There's got to be some magical reason I need to do a 10 minute swim today...right? Right?

:-P

It's those 10-20 minute workouts that are the most important IMO.  It reminds your body that it can exercise and give you just enough intensity to not make you tired but keep you sharp.  Like my run today:
10' EASY
5 x 1' tempo (1' recovery)
10' EASY

Was it even worth me waking up for?  And I felt like crap during it.  But it's important.

those quick workouts are there so your frequency stays the same.

your body is used to working out 1-2 time per day....you are just keeping your body in rythum while shedding fatgiue.

you'll start to feel really good soon I bet.....do those 20-30 minute workouts!

I dont have a single workout over 40 minutes all week.  Well, except Sunday....

i must be weird. I'm reading about the emotions that one feels when crossing the finish line, but for me last year, the victory moment came at the start of the race. Getting to the starting line was the battle for me. The race itself was just the victory lap of all that hard work I had put in.

And actually the race felt like a no-brainer to me. Perhaps because my goal was simply to finish, and honestly, I never had any doubt on race day that it would happen.

Good luck to you all!!! Savor the moments.

The hardest part, honestly, is getting ready to go for the workout (oh, wait. That and the fact that my pace just sucks these past two weeks and it's demoralizing). Once I'm out there, I'm fine.

The other issue is that my body still believes we are doing 3 hour workouts and needs to refuel constantly. Ohhh...I can't have those extra three Oreo cookies for no-darn-good-reason-just-'cuz-I-felt-like-it? Shoot.

Anyway. You guys are great. Won't let me off the hook even with less than a week to the race.
Thanks for reminding me to stick to the plan. It's the extra convincing I need to get my tushie in gear.

Speaking of which...Enough procrastination. To the bike!

too funny swishy!

yes, controlling my appetite has probably been the most difficult part of this.....

yeah, my pace sucks as well.....I think that's the test.  refusing to push the pace even though you know you can dig deep and push the pace.....really key this week to "stay in our box" as my coach would say......

Quick question about the bike course (I didn't scan through all 230+ pages of this thread):

How much climbing is lost with the new route this year? I plan to ride the course on Saturday as a look ahead for 2011 but I just read about the change in route due to construction.

I'm guessing the original route will be back for 2011 so I want to know what I'll miss. Is the bridge closed or just not race suitable? I supposed I could ride up to the bridge on both sides and see how far I get.

Hey MrB: The bridge is out on haselton road. This years route is a little easier, but the
normal route isn't bad. Expect one decent hill at end. You can ride out to where bridge
is out, but it's only two miles, but you go down the hill that you have to climb to finish
the out-back. There's some rollers on the other 4.5 miles of road but nothing to bad.
To see the "other" side of the bridge you would be going out of your way a little (but
not too bad) and you would join back up with haselton road about half-way down
from where the bridge is and normal turnaround is. I hope this helps. Enjoy your ride.
