Hi everyone!

Busy thread today.

I have a quick question re the sit ups challenge:  so we are all starting on August 3 right?  Suppose you can already do 200 sit ups?  Do we report in every day or every week?

The only thing about this challenge is that a regular crunch really only works the upper abdominals.  We also need to work the lower abs and external obliques.  Hmm...

:-)  Maybe we can also put in some reverse crunches to work the lower abs.  Like maybe do 100 regular crunches and 100 reverse crunches just to make it a more well rounded core workout?

Maybe even 75 regular sit ups, 75 reverse crunches, and 25 side crunches each side, so that we all get a much more well rounded workout?

Or am I just insane?

No one answered my question yet about recovery post-olympic. :-D  But I see that you are all very busy this morning.

Yours truly,

dbw27, the sleepy one

dbw27 - 2009-07-30 6:01 AM The spreadsheet sounds like a great idea!! :-)

Me so tired.. me sleepy and can't even speak well.  How long do I recover after a tri in which I pushed really hard (sunday nyc??)  I have been too tired to even do my race report. I had family visiting so I got NO REST.  Sunday night - slept 5 hours.  Monday night = 5 hours.  Tuesday night = 4.5 hours.  Wednesday night = 10 hours and still sleepy.  :-) All leg muscles hurt and stiff like boards.  I think I didn't rest after tri and now am destroyed.

Sorry have not been posting. Been rushing around doing stuff and now am utterly exhausted.

miss you dudes

dbw27
Ok I'll try....Keep in mind I'm still quite a newb as well.
Recover for as long as your body feels like it needs. Looking at your calendar you've got nothing coming up too soon. So if you've got a pretty good base(which we know you do), then take a few days off. Go for a light run to get back into it that way. If you are not on a formal program, do what feels right.

Just a quick HI to all my tri buddies here swbkrun MG.  Thanks for all the inspires. Still have a great cough from my weekend ride in the rain. the funny part was that I was actually kind of enjoying it. Not so much now. I don't have time right now to catch up on all the discussions but I hope everyone is doing great. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.

Dunkin Donuts all the way. When ever I am running really late for work I stop off and buy a dozen or so for the office.  My thinking is no one will notice - or remember - if I am late if I give them donuts!

LADIES!!!!!  A little piece of advise I learned the hard way this morning.  Don't have your eyebrows waxed and then go swimming!  There was at least 12 hours of separation between these events but man, trapping pool water against freshly waxed brows with goggles down right stings!!!   However, the whole time I was worried that the chlorine was going to turn my freshly colored hair orange. So then I would have had fire red eyebrows and orange hair - not a good look!  Luckiy I am still a nicely glowing auburn Kiss  And on a related subject, I've been told a way to preserve your hair color is to fully wet your hair and then spray a leave in conditioner on it before you put your swim cap on.  This way your hair is already saturated and won't absorb the chlorine.

See how hard it is to stay lovely guys?  You should really appreciate all the time and effort we women put into things.

Are you kidding me Tracy. what with all the stuff we have do to stay manly you should be extra proud of us. We have to endure hours of sitting watching TV, drinking beer and passing gas with other guys doing the same. You think that's fun

If you can already do 200 situps at one time....Fly up here and mentor me!!! As well, I think personally if you want to mix it up, you do what you want to do.  If you can do the 200 already, i saw mix it up!!

Hi!

I am actually studying to be a personal trainer (well I was, tri training this season has made me really put a lot off....).  I do a lot of hard core work on Pilates Reformer usually, but couldn't afford to do it this 8 week session.  Therefore, I thought it very timely to join the 200 sit up challenge. I can do about 20 push ups though - if I could do 200, that would be AWESOME!

TrevorC, I would love to mentor you on abs if you mentor me on swimming technique!  I am as slow as molasses on a cold winter day. :-D

Thanks for advice on recovery.  I thought I could just go back to the pool the next day and did go to the pool yesterday and that felt great.  But with the little bit of sleep I got, well I think that did me in.  Therefore, I plan on either a spin class tomorrow or pool tomorrow and then hopefully a brick with my team on Saturday morn.

I hvae Westchester tri (olympic) september 27. I was pretty out of shape from this last tri *I* feel due to injury/illness, etc during the two months after the May tri in California.  That might also be why I am jacked right now. I really would like to be very strong for the Westchester tri.

See yas!

Yours truly,

As far as recovery goes I am a big fan of active recovery.

Day after a race I try to make sure I get in either an easy swim, easy run, or easy bike.  Nothing out of zone 1.

I tend not to take any days off anymore unless there is no choice due to schedule or something similar.  I just make sure I get in something really easy.

So I am still feeling like crap this morning and decide to ditch the bike ride this morning and just sleep in.

The phone rings at 7:00 and my best friend says he is turning into my neighborhood with the trailer load of wood that we cut on Monday and has the wood splitter behind the other truck.  So I roll out of bed with the crud and go right into splitting wood for 2 hrs.  Got a nice stack of wood though and a workout to boot.

What is better than owning a wood splitter...Having a friend with a wood splitter and 3 helpers.

If you do full IM's I suggest always sticking around afterwards for the rolldown.

13:47:00   161/210 in the Mens 30-34 division at Lake Placid ended up with a Kona Spot.  Basically if you didn't know each of the M-dot branded races have a certain amount of spots for Kona, some decline because they allready qualified, some decline because they don't want to pay all that money to travel to Hawaii.  So spots "Roll down" to the next person until someone accepts, you do have to pay right there on the spot also.

People were posting on ST how mad they were because they either went to breakfast, packed up and left, etc because they thought there was no wasy a spot would open up for them and some of them were in that AG and finished 2 hrs ahead of that guy.

Lesson learned.

Tony:

Why do you do something every day including something "really easy" instead of nothing at all? As I understand things your body gets a real beenfit from regular days of no stress. The stress your muscles endure the other six days tears them down and the recovery day helps them build up better than before. Wouldn't even really easy activities diminish that benefit? Just wondering.

Let me see if I can find something on active recovery.  The basic principle is that if you do an easy workout it actually helps your body recover better than doing nothing at all.

Don't know where I first started reading about it but it also works for me.  I like to do something every day, that way if something does come up it isn't such a big deal.  So there is some science to it (just have to find the data) and some mental as I feel better if I have done something.

Ok, I got away for a swim and I am pages behind.   Shouldn't you be working out or working?

Danette---the day of my hardest Olympic, my coach had me on the trainer for a 20 minute ez flush that night.  The next morning I had zero soreness and was ready for my EZ45 minute ride and 30 minute swim.  I'm in the Tony camp on active recovery so long as you aren't injured.  The other thing I recently incorporated is post workout nutrition. Within seconds of finishing a workout or race, I am downing an Amino Vital Fast Charge pack with H20 and either a glass of chocolate millk (Steve's preference) or fruit/yogurt (my preference) to get the good protein/carb combo into my system fast.  I swear it helps.  Oh and by the way, I am the slowest swimmer in our group.  Think turtle on land.  Today I was watching a guy swim and thought, "WOW he's slow" and then I realized he was passing me. LOL!

Steve--such a funny boy.  It is hard to believe I have wiped out three times already this year.  I think I must have spent too much time on the trainer over the winter! I will go bike 500 more and see if I can stay upright for all of them.

To all doing the sit up challenge, if you want something to really take it to the next level, do this....I posted it before, but here it is again.  It is 369 moves in 15 minutes. It is the last option.  It makes me want to cry, but then I see their abs and keep going.

I understand the mental aspect. I have a tough time making myself do nothing one day a week. I am just wondering about the science. It may be that the "experts" don't really know and we just need to do what works for us. I make tuesdays my rest and do nothing days. Since I workout in the early AM and late PM, this give me the chance to do some evening stuff with my kids and watch bad TV with my wife.

This was a data entry error and was corrected by IMLP.  The 13:47 did not make Kona.

Roll Down is  very confusing.  Even Mike Reilly himself had to ask for clarification at the BSLT awards dinner.  It was amazing to see how far Clearwater slots went down.  One of the girls I was with was 47th in her AG and almost picked up a slot.   Kona slots only roll down so far.  I think it was 8 spots at Buffalo.  Then they are re-allocated.  This is where it gets real confusing.  Its also where the excitment comes in.  The happiest wildest person, besides me, was this girl who finished 5th in her AG and got a slot.  She was acorss the bar when Reilly called her name.  She went beserk, as I would to.  It was so incredidle to watch.

Yep on the post workout nutrition, if I do anything more than 60 minutes I always have a recovery drink to help me be ready for the next day.

Doug here is a medical explanation of why http://sportsmedicine.about.com/od/tipsandtricks/a/activerecovery.h... />
Also agree with Suzy, active recovery is a no-no if you are hurt.  For me most of my active recovery is biking on the trainer with almost 0 resistance or easy swims.  I am allready running enough so don't need that extra pounding on the body.

Interesting stuff Tony, especially "The general theory is that low-intensity activity assists blood circulation which, in turn, helps remove lactic acid from the muscle. Low-intensity active recovery appears to significantly reduce accumulated blood lactate and speed muscle recovery. However, all agree that more study is necessary to establish a clear answer regarding the best way to recover from intense exercise."

I am curious though that the article deals with  active recovery after "athletic competition or a hard workout" but does not address a training cycle where there are no non-active days. May be a little of trial and error is in order. Since I am going on one non-active day/week, I will continue with that for the next 2-3 weeks so that I have 4-5 weeks total. Then I will do the next 4-5 weeks with no non-active days and see if I notice a difference.

Thanks for the link.

Doug

Plainsman AU - 2009-07-30 11:32 AM So I am still feeling like crap this morning and decide to ditch the bike ride this morning and just sleep in.

I am racking my brain right now trying to think of an answer to that. WOW...Is there anything better than owning a wood splitter?? Barry man, you need to increase your standards a wee bitSealed

I know one...A neighbor with a pool.  My wife wants a pool.  We have three neighbors with pools with none being more than 3 doors away.  Why the hell would I want to pay for a pool?

BigReub:

I have a pool. It is like a boat: a sink hole for $$$! With six pumps, lots of tiles, a ldeck made from the wrong concrete etc. I spend too much on it. Tell your wife how much you are saving NOT having one. Here is a pic:

(I hope that worked)

SSMinnow - 2009-07-30 12:22 PM Ok, I got away for a swim and I am pages behind.

Oh humble one. 1:45/100yds is not slow.
Tony's swim from Culpepper last year. That is slow.Wink Dude, your going to swim this at least 10 minutes faster this year!!! Nad hopefully vomit after the race. I need you to vomit after at least one race this year!!!

Hey now - watch the slow swim talk.  I am definitely the slowest swimmer.  I just did 2:45 100s in a 300 pool swim.  I could have run faster in the water!
