I have officially completed my first triathlon.  It was the McMinnville Sprint.  Out of ~250 participants I got 45th overall.  I finished 4th in my age division and 4th in the Beginner bracket.  My T1 time was laughable at 2:54. Had I trimmed 3 seconds off my time I would have gotten 3rd in the Beginner Bracket and had I finished 35 seconds earlier I would have gotten 3rd in my age bracket.  The swim was 350m, bike was ~15.25mi, run was 5k (3.1mi). My overall time was 1hr 18min and 35s.  I am now looking to buy either a tri or road bike.  Does anyone have suggestions on which would be better and where is a good place to buy?

Congrats on your first race.  Great job!!

What kind of bike did you race this race with?  Do you typically ride/train with a group or by yourself?

Super fun Triathlon yesterday! Film clips on NBC this morning at 10am.  Prelim resuts, I finished 7 out of 21 in my age group,  overall 137 out of 373, total time 1:09:00.

I am totally stoked over my time, knocked another 8 minutes (almost) off of my previous best!!!!
Came close to winning some hardware ...  I will have some interesting stories to tell in my RR!

Hey gang...Laura and I did our last race of the season this past wknd...Chesapeakeman Ultra.  We both did great.  I pr'd the distance by about 35min and came in 10:55 and was 14th OA and 3rd AG.  Laura was the 3rd female OA in 11:18 and took home some prize money!!  The race was small (~200 starters for the full) so it gave us the opportunity to race up front.  In a true Ironman, we are both still a little bit aways from competing with the top of the AG.

We should have race reports up shortly.

Congrats mentors, quite an accomplishment!

I will probably do one last tri on Oct 11 before hanging up the tri shorts this season.  I'm also thinking about a running race or two this fall/winter (i.e. 10k).  I haven't run in a 10k race in over 20 years! 

I have never done a bike race, I will have to research that ...

Oh well, I had a disappointing last tri of 2009 today.   I did well on the transitions, all else below average or bad. 

Time was 1:19:36, 265 total competitors, 24 guys in my age group (male 45-49), I came in 19th...

Wow , I took off a week from any kind of training but I did manage to clean the basement and garage.  Now that my basement is clean (relatively speaking) I would like to do some winter cycling down there.  In the off chance that some of you folks are actually still monitoring this forum, does anyone have any idea where I can obtain a cheap bike trainer? 

I haven't yet done any research and don't know what the different types are ...  I figure if I can get the cable working down in the basement I can watch a football game while working out on those chilly Sunday afternoons.

Hopefully, I'll get back to my healthy routine this week.

I'd say first thing is to find out what you want and then stalk ebay and craigslist to see if you can get a deal.
I'd love to get one this season as well but it's not in the financial cards.

Hi Charlie1.  I know, I have been somewhat hidden here lately - lots going on.
Anyway, two thoughts:
1) What about those tripod-like devices I have seen at Sporting Goods stores that lift the rear wheel?  Are they that expensive?
2) I bought, a few years back, a recumbent (spelling?) bike at Sears.  Was probably $200, and has a few programs built-in.  THat is what I use to ride inside.  Sometimes with one of the hills programs, and other times just simply to ride for a while at a relatively easy pace.
