Pre-race routine:

No Clydesdale Division this year. when you're 50-60 pounds heavier, you just can't hang!

Bring back the Athenas and Clydesdales.
  • ...........................................

  • woke up at 4:00a coffee, PB on multigrain, 28 oz HEED sipped until done.
everything packed night before, just got dressed and grabbed pack, headed to DC

    Event warmup:

first event I actually did a little warmup. had to park far away, so jogged to event (15 min.). had a accelgel after setup. continued to sip water. was in later wave so did a lot of stretching, arm circles, etc. in the swim pen.

got hungry in swim pen; transition closed at 6:45 and my swim wave went off at 8:12. good thing some lady gave me shotblocs. also borrowed a little extra Glide. was chilly too.
    Swim
    • 29m 20s
    • 1640 yards
    • 01m 47s / 100 yards
    Comments:

lots of people. much more confident so I just swam over, around, below people! no grabbing or anything, but hey, you can't wait on people either. It definitely slowed times up a little, but I felt I swam almost as good as my conditioning permitted.

sighting was good, except veered a little of course when coming back into the sun. breathing was good. I felt I had a little left in the tank though at end. breathing hard when I swam up to the ramp.

I even drafted to guys for a while, but bagged it when the guy wasn't sighting well.

used a two beat kick on both sides. that's a first.

    What would you do differently?:

to be honest, looking back, I did everything about as well as I could given my limited conditioning.

work on kick; do more intervals to better breathing.
    Transition 1
    • 02m 16s
    Comments:

swam until I touched the ramp. then ran well. suit unzipped and rolled to hips well. maybe could've ran a little faster. focused on breathing.

located bike then took off goggle no head, cap and plugs. might've saved a few seconds doing that while running. suit rolled off easy but stuck on heels (not terribly, maybe a few seconds there too).

took a few extra seconds grabbing an extra gel for shirt (should've taped or put in shirt prior to swim).

shades on, helmet on and gone. no rubber bands so pulled red plastic strap out of tall kitchen trash bags I used to cover bike night before, and used to put on ground with Carson's Lightning McQueen towel! worked great.

there was a shorter path to exit that I located, but in haste didn't take. again a few seconds.
    What would you do differently?:

tape gel to bike. remove goggles, plugs cap while running.

    AG rank 17/290.
    Overall Rank 335/3933
    Bike
    • 1h 12m 5s
    • 24.85 miles
    • 20.68 mile/hr
    Comments:

numbers were better than last year, but I still need to be a better biker. No reason why I can't do 22+ mph.

tried to spin a little higher cadence. also felt I could've dialed in shifting a little better but tough to do with clip ons.

out of saddle for up hills. no numbness with new seat.
    What would you do differently?:

    train harder.
    Transition 2
    • 01m 37s
    Comments:

kicked ass on T2. took shorter route to rack bike.

bike racked. helmet off. socks were in each shoe (balega socks are awesome, stretchy so they go on easy.) socks on, shoes on. grabbed hat with race belt in it, hat on, clipped belt and split.
    What would you do differently?:

    AG rank 2/290
    Overall Rank 124/3933

took a few extra seconds clippin on belt. run faster? nothing really
    Run
    • 52m 9s
    • 6.21 miles
    • 08m 24s  min/mile
    Comments:

not a good run for me. I was really looking to be closed to 8:00 miles.

I hydrated well, and found a rabbit to trail most of the time. paced off him which I felt was my max, then passed and looked for someone to catch at mile 5.

left leg and foot numbness was present. don't understand this but I wind up flipping my foot around a little to get blood flow to it.
    What would you do differently?:

train harder. I think it was primarily limited by lack of training on the bike. pushed the bike a little harder, and paid price on run.
    Post race
    Warm down:

let muscles cool down while standing/walking. sat down and went to sit indian style....CRAMPS.

then ate 3 cookies and it screwed my gut up. CRAPS.

line to get in the transition to get bike was CRAP. took forever. some ten in, ten out policy. it was excruciatingly long. especially for the later waves.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I raced this race about as well as I could. Lost a little game on the run, but without more training time, this is about what I got.

I would've liked to have had the Athena category myself, so I agree, bring 'em back! Congrats on your race!

    Counselor,
you had some amazing AG stats for someone who didn't train the way they wanted to!

Charlie - awesome performance, especially T2! Just a suggestion - more brick work if you don't already. Probably help on the run, especially longer distances. Also, you may need more salt since you cramped up afterwards. But, that may also be a training issue. Great job!
