moabrunner - 2009-03-04 8:54 PM Hey I forgot to add I got my speed suit today in the mail and it is sweet. I got the Blue Seventy Point Zero 3. It was on sale for $180.00. I hope it is worth the money. I figured I would get one since it is my first and it is a long way without a wetsuit.
I love my Blue Seventy Point Zero 3.

Do you feel like it helps in the swim...i.e. does it make you more bouyant?  I have heard mixed reviews on the speedsuits.

Supposedly it does nothing for bouyancy but helps with gliding throught the water. Whether it is worth $180.00 that is another story. I have heard people say it has given them anywhere from 2-6 seconds per 100.

Where did you buy yours?

They work in a couple ways.  The biggest is how the suits compression your skin and reduce skin movement.  This reduces the friction/drag of the water passing the swimmer, thus making them more hydrodynamic.  And if water is 1000 times denser than air....

Best swim tip I can give for Louisville is, right after you round the turn-around buouy, start heading back towards the south bank and don't allow yourself to drift north to Ohio!  I'm convinced I added several minutes to my swim time by swimming to Ohio and back.

RE the speed suit...I would think the penality you pay for being warmer would off-set the premium for being more hydodynamic.  Then again, fluid dynamics was the only class I failed in college - and it was an elective so I didn't have to retake it :-).

Oops, I guess that is Illinois on the north shore of the Ohio across from Louisville.  Anyway, don't go there!

I feel more buoyant and faster. As we all know a lot of this sport is mental so I am willing to pay for that advantage. Plus it looks cool on my long lean body.

Ohio? Illinois? Are you sure Fluid Mechanics was the only class you had trouble with? I'm guessing you never made the finals in the Geography Bee!

Heat shouldn't be an issue. Speed suits are used in Kona all the time. There has even been talk about banning them from the World Championships...so I figure there must be some "unfair" advantage.

Anyone using the Assos bike shorts I need to get a good pair for the long rides.  The perl's are not cutting it!  I am also looking into the zoot ultra's  they look pretty good also.

I have the Orca RS1 and have used it a few times in the pool. It has negative bouyancy so it just sits wherever you put it in the water. I do feel it holds my hips higher in the water, probably from the tightness, but not constrictive in any way. I can swim about 45 seconds faster per 500 and it just feels real easy. Almost the same effect as a wetsuit, but not so tipped forward. I can get mine off faster than my wetsuit, which is nice. They make them to wick moisture out so you don't get any hotter than normal. I highly suggest one. I got mine at trivillage.com for $160 plus the extra 10% discount. Happy training.

I don't think I'll invest in a speed suit. I don't even like wearing my wetsuit.  I just need to find speed and swim faster!!  Sighting more will help too.  I had the same issue as Mike.  I found myself drifting or swimming toward the wrong state!!

I'm sticking with the thong swimsuit and just holding onto Amy's ankles and letting her drag me to the swim finish.

I got mine about a week ago. Can't wait for the ice to melt and actually get outside and use it.

If I wore a thong heads woud turn, the opposite direction. Also, eyes woud be gouged and lunches lost.

Not that I want to discourage you ladies from the BT thong, I think thats a fine idea.
