Thanks for the input Kellie and Kyla! I think I'll try going with the swim recovery day and see how that goes. I think I may still need an occasional complete day off to keep my sanity though

Last year I tried to train everyday and it is MUCH harder mentally to keep up that pace and it turned training into a choir that you Had to do everyday not something you wanted to do.  Now I make sure I have 1 day per week off and have a rule that if I cannot complete a workout the way it was supposed to be done then I won't do it.   Good Luck !!!

Yeah if you can work in one or two days off a month, that wont hurt.  Some people like their off days to be something easy as a recovery day (such as swimming), and others need a complete day off.  YOu'll know once you get going

Sanity is important!!

I've done much like David over the last year -- at least one day OFF/week. I've been less good about that lately, but have had definite days of super easy stuff (or I've ended up having an active day i.e. skiing but not a WORKOUT day, so the day off isn't a couch potato day). Anyway, mentally sometimes I need to see that day of nothing on the horizon -- it can get me through tough workouts if I tell myself "You can rest on Sunday." Even if I don't end up resting.... knowing that I CAN if I choose to helps!!

I hope you are feeling better soon, too, Roni!

And Kellie, I hope the knee feels like you're making progress? I'm watching your blog for updates. Hang in there!

I hope Greg comes in and posts about his LTHR test today -- would love to read any ensuing discussion there.

Hi Everyone,

I just got home from another 2 day work trip and I'm exhausted.

I hope everyone who's dealing with injuries is healing well. Unfortunately, this traveling thing is killing my ability to workout. I'm putting in 15 hour days during those 2 days I'm gone, with no access to a fitness center in the hotels. I've been bringing a floor matt with me and doing Pilates, but I really consider that a rest day. I'm definately ready to be done with this commitment, which was only supposed to last a month.

I'd ask for suggestions, but I think I just have to accept that on those 2 days (and the day prior) I am not going to get any workouts in.

Time for bed and some good workouts this weekend

I went and looked at the thread and saw his assessment, which didn't really offer much, if I remember correctly (that was this morning). But you got kudos for a good test anyway, right? And you did make improvements.

I'm in awe that you got 'er done again. I can't think about that again, as I'll get all stressed out! I'm already stressed about Monday's ride (those intervals go up to 2'). I'll be happy when it's behind me!!!!!!

Sorry that work is getting in the way, Heidi. You have a good attitude and you'll come out the other end just fine!

Hey everyone!  How did your weeks go?   Mine was fairly uneventful due to the knee.  I started working on range of motion yesterday though and I hope to be back to some biking this week when I get enough ROM back.

My weight is starting to move down a bit.  I put myself on a diet this week (started Wednesday) and Im feeling good.  I just made a list of all foods that I consider approved to eat, made a list of things for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.  And I can eat whatever, but keep it on that list and in moderation.  We'll see if it works!

Sometimes there is only so much you can do.  So make sure what you get in are all quality sessions!

Yeah, I'll see what happens the next time I test.  I think that my ramp up in running is playing a role, since when I started Jorge's program, I wasn't running much.

Heidi, travel is tough on workout schedules.  Count your Pilate's as workouts!  It is something and not just sitting on the bed watching TV all evening.

I am working on getting enough discipline that when I can't get the workout that I am supposed to do while I am on the road, I at least do something.  I have a strength training program that uses stretch bands( I have a set) for one exercise, 5lb dumbbells(I improvise) for one exercise, and body weight for the rest.  If I make myself do this when I can't do other workouts, I feel better.

Week went pretty well.  Experiencing some pain in shin and knee, so I took a day off.  Will see how I feel with todays run, then tomorrow's long run.  The next two weeks are going to strain my ability to get workouts in.  Next week, I travel with another sales rep according to his schedule, so workouts might be tough and the week after, my wife and I are going on a cruise.  I will sign up for a couple spinning classes to replace the Jorge sessions, and try to run around the deck a couple times.  This cruise was one of the reasons I am not pursuing IM this year.  I didn't want to pressure myself or get stressed if I missed even the whole week of training.  I have only been on one other cruise and I only ran once. Though I have lofty desires, I may get lazy and just eat!

Greg-A cruise sounds like a nice way to break up the winter.

My weight this week stayed the same. 136.

Kellie-I'm glad your knee is getting better.

Yes, it does and that was part of the plan to go now.  We are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary which is technically in May, but by May it's nice here and more expensive than in February!

Mine ended up lighter because I fought off a cold and scrapped anything "extra." I did get in Jorge workouts plus a couple of runs. Most importanty, I did not end up with a full-fledged cold/whatever and I think two good nights of sleep (i.e. no 5:30 alarms) and fewer workouts helped.

Weight was 132.5 today (133.5 on Friday), both in my range.

Hope you make more progress with the knee, Kellie!

Hang in there Heidi! Good work Greg! Missing everyone else...!!

Hi! I haven't been posting much.  I have felt busy.

Three friends of mine and me signed up for the Steelhead HIM on August 1st!! I am excited to train for it but it was a really crazy decision with my knee bothering me, etc.  If I have trouble with the knee on the bike this week, I am going in for a FIST fitting.  I ran 8 miles yesterday and my knee is feeling good so far.

My weight 159.2.  I am not progressing in that area due to lack of focus.  I really would like to be at 140 when I do Steelhead.

That is so cool that you entered a HIM!!! Good for you!!

And great news that the knee held up for an 8-mile run. So do you think it's the bike that is irritating it?

Great to see you here -- I keep peeking at your logs and you're getting something done every day, so good work!

Happy Superbowl Sunday. I'm not into football at all this year, although my hubby grew up in AZ. We're having friends over and there will be lotsa food... but it will be "healthy crap food." (That is, homemade goodies, organic grass-fed beef or buffalo, no trans fats or HFCS...)

Healthy crap? lol  You are so good! I am just going to my inlaws for a party with pizza, etc.

I rode my bike and the knee hurt mildly while pedaling.  I lowered the seat and it hurt worse.  I then ran outside and the knee feels fine.  I am not sure what to do with the bike.  I will take pics of myself and  see if I see something funny...maybe I will post them!  I just want to be able to train hard!

Bronwyn, usually sore knees from riding is a sign of a saddle too low.  Have you ever been fitted by a professionsl?

As far as the superbowl is concerned, I will be eating.  I just burned 1360 calories on my run, so I get some "free" calories right?

I just had a guy at my local bike shop fit me but it wasn't a FIST fit.  I am trying to save the $200.  The more I try and save money, the more I seem to spend!!  If I am in pain this week, I will shell out the $200 for a real fit.  And not to sound negative but watch, my knee will still hurt!!

Hi everyone! It was a pretty good week for me. Busy with lots of training! Just finished the week off today with my longest run to date... 15 miles! I've had some issues with fatigue and body aches, but I think it's just a matter of adjusting to the increased volume of training.

Kyla- Did you start your HIM training today?

Heidi- Sorry the travel is lasting longer than expected. Do you know how much longer you'll have to do it?

Bronwyn-  I would highly recommend the fit. It is alot of money, but I found it to be worth it. I couldn't believe what a difference it made in how I felt on my bike.

Greg- nice job with the run and jorge bike training! I think your probably right about making some cardio gains from run training that made a difference in your cycling.

Kellie- Keeping my fingers crossed for you to be able to start cycling soon. With the level of training your used to doing I'm sure it's completely frustrating to have to wait. Hope the PT works its magic for you!

Hi everyone. Short week planned. I already blew my diet at the superbowl party I went to. Lots of hotwings and stuffed peppers. Not to mention my addiction to Dr. Pepper. Will train on Mon, Tues, and Wed. After that we are headed to Las Vegas. We will be there until Monday. I would say that I will be training all weekend but that probably won't happen. I will just work my butt off before I leave and when I get back.

Roni-Great job on the 15 mile run! I hope you feel back to full energy soon.

Jon-Have fun in Vegas. I don't think I've ever been there. Let us know how it is.

Training plan question: I've decided to do a local small Oly in the first week of August. So I'm looking at the 20 week training plans. Running is definately my weak spot. I have no delusions of setting the course on fire, I'd just like to finish it without walking. So, should I do the 20 week balanced program or the 20 week running focused one? I definately need some advice on this.

The  key piece of info for you to have is that about 5 years ago I ruptured a tendon in my foot that has become a chronic injury. Since that time, I have not been able to get above 5 miles without having a serious re-injury, so I'm a bit concerned about building the mileage in a safe way this time.

Definitely doesnt look too correct, but if it helps your knee for now, that might be ok.  However, it may be a shoe/cleat placement problem.  They figure all that out in a proper fitting though.  I have inserts in one shoe, none in the other, and both are angled differently.

AGain, proper bike fit will go a LONGGGGG way.  If that knee is tweaked and affects your biking and running, your done.   If the bike fit will transfer when you get a new bike, even better!
