Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge cmrey528 - 2009-10-19 10:04 PM Great job to those of you who are really cranking out the miles! Those of you who have been sick: adjust your goals accordingly if necessary and then take care of yourself and get well! Just under 2.5 miles for me today. I'm only 7.75 miles away from goal and if all goes well I should be very close, if not there, by this weekend. If it looks like I'm really going to crush my goal I'll increase it some, but since we can't go over 100% this month it doesn't really matter as long as I get there. Great job!!! Crushing your goal is always sweet |

I'm a "stay-at-home-mom", which means most of my longer workouts get done during the week when the kids are at school. I try to keep most of my weekend workouts shorter in order to preserve family time. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge I thought of that after I had submitted it. Oh well swim for me today with intervals and such. One more short run before the 30k mudfest trail run. With flash flood warnings there yesterday, that 1400 foot climb in the first 3 miles followed by a steap 1300 foot decent should be quite interesting. And then there are the stream crossings. Taking bets on it not bing a PR over last year's relatively dry race on the same course. I am thinking one of my older pairs of running shoes. Tod you are going to own IMAZ your training is sooo solid. Just don't kill yourself on the bike. The course is flat so if the wind doesn't kick up too early you should be all set for the run with pleanty left in the tank. Which means take it easy for the first 18 miles and then see what you have left for the last 8. |

Expert 1773 San Gabriel Valley, California | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge wgraves7582 - 2009-10-20 10:29 AM Running Pumpkins are getting discarded in the fields by the Ghoulies! GO GHOULIES (I am their team cheerleader now that I am sidelined - so it is my duty to rile up the competition) You know you can't catch us on post count padding and the end of the month will bring the same demise to your team. But that said - keep it running pumpkins - your weight loss will make field throwing that much easier! Post padding is only for those who cannot do anything else. Feel free. Post a jillion messages. Who cares? We are into things more substantive and meaningful. And of course, we are hampered by our honesty. We could also be at higher percentages if we were willing to be a little loose with the truth. |

Seriously though I have a hard enough keeping up with the few threads I'm involved with and comments etc. I don't get the padding thing - It makes keeping up a headache. That's a challenge I'm more then happy to lose. |

Ah nice 2400 yard swim with intervals galor. Towel off and eat dinner 8). pffffftttttt Fine - just rub it in! Got 4 easy miles in yesterday. Part of that was a gait analysis offered by my gym. Very interesting! The trainer taped my running from various angles, then we took a look at it in slow mo on the computer. Overall my form looks pretty good, but I discovered something I was previously unaware of - my knees rotate internally when I run (probably pretty much all the time, actually). The result is that when you see me run from behind, my lower legs sort of swing outward with each stride. Had no idea that was going on! I guess that will give me something to work on in the off season! |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge Did they recommend that you change that aspect of your run? Our bodies tend to work a certain way for a reason... Changing gate may be something that would need to occur very slowly or perhaps not at all depending on the cause for the problem. Do you pronate or the opposite of pronate, forgot the term? One thing I noticed as I have run more is that I do not swing my arms as far with each stride. I also use my upper thighs a bit more as my body shifts slightly forward to increase speed. I can actually feel the point in my weight shift where I go from a slower to a faster speed. And then for very fast speeds, for me, I am lifting my heal up higher on the return forward, hard to describe, but basically the angle between my butt and my heal that my knee makes becomes more acute than when I am just slogging away at it, but only after my foot leave the ground coming back forward. It is all lite stuff for me until the race on Saturday in the mud. I have a 4 ish mile run today with strides a day off and then a 20 minute run on Friday. So 18.5 miles on Saturday race with 3-5k elevation gain, will have to chart it with my garmin to see which it is. It was not clear from the websight if the 5k elevation gain was for the 30k or the 50k. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge Be careful adjusting how you run. Older you are harder changes are on your body. I went to a seminar on running put on by my old coach and was told I was a big heel striker...do this and that drill and try doing this running. Within 2 weeks I ended up with plantar faciities and then achillies issues. I battled with them on and off for 9 months and now 2+ years later I get the same issue. Our bodies run way for many reasons. Funny about a year after I went through all this frustration I read an article or book by Friel that said if you are over 35 or maybe 40 don't change your running style as your body often doesn't adapt well. Yah that is what happened to me. |

Pro 4353 Wallingford, PA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge Good points, guys! I'll take it easy on trying to make any big adjustments. The main thing I notice in looking at the video is it just looks like a lot of wasted energy! I'm not exactly sure how I would go about "fixing" it anyway! Got another short run in today... shorter than planned - I've got ANOTHER kid home sick again! Different bug this time! Dang kids keep messin' with my training schedule....... |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Running Pumpkins - Halloween Run Challenge I did a run/walk this afternoon on a beautiful fall day full of red and orange maple trees...for about 45' run and 39' of walking. Need to keep doing runs/walks each day for hour or more each day. No more cyclocross races until 10/31 but starting P90X. |
