Subject: RE: Team Gear Goddesses

Just checking in from Reno. My daughter is in a Volleyball festival here. An amazing gathering of some 10,000 young women from all over this country and a few others. They had opening ceremonies today where all teams were introduced Olympic style in a stadium, ages 12-18. This festival was started in 1984 to encourage young women in this (and as a result other) sports. Tournaments start tomorrow. I thought it would be wonderfully appropriate to mention this here among Team Goddesses.

Anyway....you are all amazing!

It seems like the Goddesses successes are driven more by each other's support, where the Bones seem to be driven by smack talk and fear of losing (again). Or, maybe its just this second margherita and a 10,000 girls volleyball event thats talking.

 GO TEAM GODDESS

oh yeah...and the theme of the festival is "peace, love and volleyball"

Preface: I don't know most of the folks here, so all the "guys v. gals" thing really means to me is "some charity is gonna get some money".

I have been thinking about this challenge and something about going over 100% really bothers me. It seems to me that the challenge was all about meeting a goal. In that case, the winning team should really be the team which has the largest percent of members achieving their goal, not how much you can go over your goal.

Same here ... I'm not big on one person getting 200% of their goal and that making up for 3 members that only got 75% (or any other situation one could think up). I agree, the point (as I understand it) was for every to set a challenging goal and to meet that goal. Going over the goal almost seems to say more about the weakness of the initial goal than it does about the committment to go 150% over the goal.

FWIW, I calculated 275 miles and rode 55 last month (coaching, education master's class, family, etc. limit my training chedule bigtime in certain months)

To be honest, and in the spirit of triathlon ... the contest could have included "minimum"
standards in the other 2 events that would prevent triathletes from becoming, basically, "cyclists" (and this is said by someone that has swam for a grand total of 1:07 this month -- mainly due to schedule conflicts between class & baseball v. YMCA)

but all of a sudden, it seems to be more important to go as far over the goal as possible. That just doesn't seem quite right to me.

I agree, it's almost a "loophole".

And, through no fault of anyone else, I am too competative and want to beat the boys, and I don't want to let the girls down so I feel as though I have to keep riding during the 4 days of the month left after the 1/2 IM this weekend even though I will have reached my goal.

Same here ... My current schedule will have me at 317/275 or 115%. But, it also works out nicely that July can be a run focused month, and August a swim focused month (swim focused, for me, is twice a week .... FWIW) as my schedule is freed up for the adult lap swim times at the Y. I admit, and agree, that without the bike comp, I would take those "over percentage" hours and put them towards the swim to balance my training.

I had no idea what to expect this month. It's been my best training month ever. 275+ miles ridden, Ill log 50 miles ran, and 5 hours swimming (not losong any sleep over it). It's nice to make a goal, formulate a plan, and execute the plan, all the while continuing to coach and attend EdAdmin master's classes (8-4:30). It has also been a surprise free month, which is rare when you have two young ones that can interrupt traiing, seemingly at will.

I will say, it has been an honor, to be a participant on a team refered to as "The Boners" ... and staying consistent with my "31 going on 14" self, I found it entertaining to read one of the ladies say "I'm not getting down on any of the boners ...." in another thread. Sorry for the length of my post ... likely my only one in either team thread.

Malgal and Ryan - you put into words a feeling I was having, thank you for doing so. It just seems like it went beyond the spirit and purpose of the challenge. I set my goals realistically, for me. The fact that I met it, but could not surpass it, seems less like a victory and more like I'm letting down my teammates. The drive to win sadly seems to be taking away from the challenge. The notion of it is not whether you win or lose, its how you play the game has lost its meaning here. Enjoying the ride (pun intended) seems less of the goal, but instead who gets there first. (good grief, Nikki...stop with the metaphors).  Yes, it has pushed everyone to put more miles in, but it is taking away perhaps more then it is giving.

Ladies,

I'm sorry to read that some of you feel like the hyper-competitive spirit of some of us is taking the fun out of your challenge.

I think it is wonderful that you are striving and reaching for your respective goals. I thought about the other challenges and realize that the chicks won basically by reaching their goals while the guys simply did not reach their goals. It wasn't a matter of who was more over 100% than who; the chicks won the swim challenge just by hitting 101% of goal.

Some of us get off on being highly competitively-spirited; some of us simply enjoy the gratification of reaching a hard-earned goal. Neither is good nor bad; it simply is what it is.

Enjoy your riding!

(I hit my goal today; will update later. Just stopped into the office to pickup some papers.)

Seems to me this contest is all about smack-talk and bragging rights ... which makes sense when you have a group that knows (and teases) each other very well.

The contest seems to be primarily about smack tack and braggin' rights. Given that you have a lot of people that know (and tease) each other very well, that's certainly understandable, maybe even expected.

What will be interesting is, at the end, seeing what percentage of people (overall) hit their goal.

GOAL...GOAL...GOAL!  If it were not for this challenge, I don't think I would have come close to riding 150 miles this month.  When I first pledged that amount, I had a whole lot of second thoughts.  The challenge kept me going!! I know there is only a few days left, and I will taper a little cause I have a race on Sunday, but I will have a few more before the challenge is up!

Hey Goddesses, after my race today I'm at 264 miles or 94% of my goal. So, I'll hit it this month after missing both my swim and bike goals last month!

I was going to go out and crank out an easy ten miler this afternoon, but after placing 2nd in my AG at a local sprint (and trying my best to hammer the bike leg), I'm too tired. Back at it tomorrow.

Congrats on placing 2nd in your age group lynda! That is great!

I rode my upcoming race bike course this morning and got my butt kicked, talk about some major hills, I hit 42.1 mph! (And to think Lance does 32 mph in an average hour, wow.) Anyway, I wanted to do two loops of the course today for 54 miles but I am still too congested to get much air in the lungs. Still managed to do 39.2 though so I've reached my goal! I'm at 115%! Going leapfrog riding/running with my bf tomorrow so that will be another 5 miles, not a lot but everything counts! If I get ambitious I'll do another ride on Wednesday, maybe 20 miles or so.

Goddessess I did my sprint Tri and so now I'm at 186/200 miles. Next ride should put me over the top. What was the challenge to me? Trying to help motivate me to keep on riding and making me a better cyclist. Has it worked? Heck yah....my bike time average mph during today's sprint was 16.54...first sprint of the season was 14.37 and my 1/4 Iron was 13.97. Funny aside...my oldest daughter came to the race with me and my middle daughter did not. We were watching the Red Sox game and my daughter was looking at my left calf and asked what the A was for...I told her it was for Athena...and Emily chimed in....oh she is a Goddess...so I guess this month I'm a Goddess at riding and at racing!!

I've never done 42 MPH for a nanosecond in my life. Good job!

Now, this is our own "private" club house, right? I'm going to share and then I'm going to forget. I'm pretty soured on this challenge. Yep, I've confessed it. Shoot me.

When I set my goal, I counted each and every bike day, forecast my mileage, and pledged a stretch goal. To make it (and I'm not there yet), I even found a bike tour, and spent an overnight away from home so I could ride a 50 mile tour. This really has taken time and energy to make my goal. When I read in the other club house that folks who pledged 130 miles or less than me this month are overjoyed that they exceeded their goals, well, it makes me a little sick. Especially the longer distance contestants. As NYtrigal notes, 50 miles in a day is a short ride for some of them.

Now I don't want to hear from any 'bones about this memo, this is strictly a goddess thing. I'm going to keep riding on behalf of all of our goddesses. But it really does strike me as odd as to how the goals were set for this challenge.

Okay, to put a public face on this, let's keep riding and if we fall short, the stronger riders took it this month. The personal gain? I averaged the the best bike time I've ever ridden this month and some charity will be really glad we stepped up to the plate.

That is TERRIFIC! I am a quarter of a mile short of my goal. Like you, I know I would not have put 155 miles in this month if not for the challenge.

264 miles... I can't even imagine what that would be like. Maybe someday, when I'm all grown up, I can put in the miles like you. My biggest ride ever was 40 miles and that was a direct result of this challenge.

I'm at 277.91/270. That's over 100%!! I don't have a calculator handy, and I'm not inclined to "do the math" but I'm certain that's OVER GOAL!!!! I've still got a group ride tonight... so that will add about 25 more miles.

Sounds just like me.  Got my bike the last week of April.  Didn't own one before that.  My first ride was in the parking lot spinning in circles, and had the padels bit into my calves when trying to prevent a fall (and fell anyway).  Pedal marks still visible.  Now I'm riding on the road with traffic, riding my bike to work and stuffs.  My mileage is still low.  Seems like your learning curve is much steeper.  Good job!

Glad to see that I am not the only one with a deprived childhood! Somehow I got the damage done in the shins (bruises thankfully gone), not the back. And my first ride was two hours for eight miles (including a few crashes). I am doing much better, but still waiting for the gift of speed (I am upgrading to clipless, which should help).

Yep, I was scared of clipless, but I saw some racers, and they just looked so graceful, like they and the bike were one piece. I already have shoes with detachable cleats, so my only expense will be pedals. I think that I worked out most of the logistics using straps - I already had my toppling over moment.
