"Flailing... like fairiess" weren't my words but it is a sentiment with which I agree. I don't frequent this thread but do check in every now and then and that softball was just hanging there so I took a swing. But then two people took shots at me. Not at a sport, at me personally. So I retaliated, but I still kept it focused on the sport. |

Yeah, bcart was expressing frustrations with the divings (not all games and all teams do that - in fact, the very same team of Purtugal did not dive in the entire match against N. Korea), and you came in and generalize this as "Yup, that's the World Cup soccer in a nutshell." |

I believe that will be lower than the number of players that defect or go missing from the hotel tonight! |

I believe that will be lower than the number of players that defect or go missing from the hotel tonight! It was speculated that the 0-7 lost to Purtugal was due to the team knowing thier country going to broadcast the game LIVE, so the coach decided to take an "all offense" approach, leaving the own side empty. Note that N. Korea don't do live broadcast of games playing ouverseas. |

I hardly ever watch soccer but see it every time I do watch so in my personal experience most games and most teams do it. I've seen U11 girls teams do it. I've heard coaches "suggest" it. It is one of the biggest problems I have with soccer. I saw some tattooed tough guy looking player do it in a game that was on yesterday (it's on in my workplace constantly). Guy was inked all over, shaved head, bad a$$ attitude, but he rolled around on the ground clutching his leg like a little girl. A few moments later he's up and running around again. I saw another game where they replayed a "tackle" in slow motion and as the one guy was falling he was already looking for the ref and waving his arms. Weak. |

Master 1681 Rural Ontario | Subject: RE: World Cup - Spoilers D.K. - 2010-06-25 11:48 AM Now North Korea had degraded from the "Mysterious team" who broke Brazil's goal and losing to Brazil 1-2 to the team that allows the most goals in. The North Korea team Laison Officer denies all rumours that 4 players have defected... Apparently all of them returned back to the team when they were informed that defection would result in their families being sent to Hard Labour Camp #19... as a reward for returning to North Korea the players and their familes get to remain in Labour Camp #7, which is renowned for its lower mortality rates and a minimum-once-a-day allotment of rice. Yay for Kim-Jong Il. |

Master 1681 Rural Ontario | Subject: RE: World Cup - Spoilers With France, Italy, Greece out and Spain in serious danger (deciding group H games are on soon) we could have the FIGS out of the turnament (like the economic PIGS, except Portugal survived and Italy takes Ireland's place) A few stats: 13 Euro teams made the World Cup Finals - 6 will (probably) advance 6 African teams made the World Cup Finals - 1 will advance 3 Asian teams made the World Cup Finals - 2 will advance 3 North American teams made the World Cup Finals - 2 will advance 2 Oceania teams made the World Cup Finals - 0 will advance 5 South American teams made the World Cup Finals - ALL 5 will advance - and all 5 will likely win their round-robin groupings. I would suggest that this WC will be won by a team from South America - ARG, BRA, CHIL, PAR or URU |

Yeah... cause we never see that in football or hockey. It happens in every sport... get over it.Don't forget NBA. I think there is a "Stop the Flop" website somewhere. I'll give you hockey and I'll take your word about the NBA. That league is unwatchable. But not in football. Almost every player on every play in football gets hit with more force than the soccer players who writhe in agony when they get kicked on the shin guard. We can debate the protective gear aspect if you want but the physical force on the body is much greater in football and occurs much more often. Do athletes in every sport try to work the officials? Yes. Do football players roll around on the ground feigning injuries? Only when they drop a TD pass and have to make it look like they were hurt Flopping on the ground trying to stall the game or get a penalty called on the other team does not happen in football the way it does in soccer. It just doesn't and to try to draw that comparison is really grasping at straws. You did use the sarc font though so I'll cut you some slack. Of course they are all a bunch of Nancy's compared to rugby players. Oh, and I'll get over or not get over that which I choose to get over or not get over, thankyouverymuch. Could the level of play and competition have improved within the Americas? Does it have to do with an increase in the Americas players going to European leagues? Or is it just cyclical and next WC it will be someone else? |

WIth the sports getting more popular in the country, more resourses is put in and teams are more motivated. As a national team USA has been quite good this year. Kids having the opportunities playing in European leagues also help. As for the Europeans, multiple factors contributing to their failure this year. After the 2006 WC, even though Italy got the first place, they went back home and immediately faced with dealing with the Serie A scandal that involves top teams like Juventus, Inter Milan etc. France got the wrong coach. He chose players not base on their ability but by matching horoscopes. I read about him avoiding scorpios when picking his teams. And the French players have no respect to him (boycotting team practice etc). Germany is prague by injuries. |

When the WC is on another continent the South Americans win it (Every time so far). I think the Europeans are not quite as good as they think they are - the 'aura' of having wealthy and successful professional clubs clouds their perspective... (no offense - I'm guessing form your name you're originally from the BENELUX area - go Dutch go!)
