Just because you had your headphones in and couldn't hear, that didn't mute the sound of your trumping for the rest of us!

Parp! Parp! Parp!

It would have been a good rhythm setter if it didn't smell so eggy!

BWAHAHAHAHAHA

As in, better to be the farter than the fartee? I completely agree! after all, who would want to be party to a Manatee fartee?

I thought that this was going to be about her singing, or worse, like the two "ladies" who cackled incessantly in the row of treadmills right behind me 5 days ago.  Luckily, I belong to a hugemongous gym, so I moved.

Your story is funnier.

Old couple sitting in church and the lady turns to her husband and says " I'm so bad, I just let out a little silent gas".  Husband leans to his wife and says "I think it is time to change the batteries in your hearing aid"

Weight loss thoughts:

If you mix flour and water together - you get glue.  Add a little sugar and and eggs and you now have a cake.  Ever wonder what happened to the glue?

Well - studies have revealed that the glue is what helps the cake stick to your butt.

I love cake/sweets, too.  After that and the lecture on nutrition today I'm steering clear of it for a while.

Lesson of the day:  eating right helps with recovery.

I wish I could afford to go see somebody about nutrition.  I don't eat really bad but I think there are changes that I could make to help with some weight loss and also extra energy.

My guilty habit that I am trying to break is my 20oz Coke that I have after my lunch.  In the past when I have been able to stop drinking pop I have lost 5 pounds in a couple of weeks.  With the season starting soon I am going to try again and hopefully I can kick the habit for good.

Also, thanks for the inspires everybody!

Re: aero bars , I would think you are way too close to the event now to go for aeros... (nothing new on race day etc etc) and as said, its not good in group rides!
Anyway, hope all are well, I'm totally knackered, so i'm going to bed super early. Muscle recovery, COMMENCE!

Hi everyone, I am catching up here after a little winter break. Needed the vacation!

I had my first swim lesson today and the instructor kicked my butt. I almost thought half way through the lesson that this whole swimming thing may be more than I can handle. Is it just the beginner working to hard? I hope it does get easier. Any advice is appreciated.
have a great day!

Hey Manatee's - attached is a link to the US Triathlete site for a nutrition article that just came out today in their communicaitons.  More reading I know - something that can be more hurtful than helpful at times - but thougt I'd pass it along anyhow.  I think someone (Yanti maybe??) mentioned the Paleo diet before and this article talks to that, so if you want to read a quick summary on it, follow the link.

http://www.usatriathlon.org/resources/multisport-zone/fuel-station/paleolithic-eating-for-the-endurance-athlete

Not sure about anyone else, but there seems to be LOTS of opinions on what you should or should not eat.  I'm like Yanti and I can eat pretty much anything without issues (did you see the guy eating the potato while running during the Ironman - that could be me).  I know others that have to have a very careful diet regardless of their activity level.

The only consistent thing I've heard is:  Practice your diet before race day.

Hey hey everyone. Just caught up reading all the posts since my last visit. I will be around a lot more regularly now that the holidays and my husband's birthday are over. Got talked into going to Vegas last minute so I missed THREE days of training and oh boy....the food! I know I gained at least 2 lbs in four days. Gah!

Lots of great info and advice here. I hadn't thought about what to think about when purchasing aerobars, so you guys rock. Rock, I say! Oh and I did another PB today running. Er....my kinda "running" anyway! LOL!

I need to find some March and April sprint tris. Anyone have input on some good ones in the TX/OK area? My season is kind of split in two due to the overwhelming summer heat, so no races after first week of June until mid September. I can't stand the heat....it melts me and I want to die.

I was a true beginner swimmer last year this time. It took me exactly six weeks to get to where I didn't feel like I would die. It took another three months until I started enjoying it. Now, at a year out - I freaking love to swim and I even get compliments on my stroke from people I don't know! (The compliments could have something to do with the fact that my left boob sometimes peeks-out of my swimsuit for no apparent reason, but I will go with the awesome stroke form theory)

Congrats on getting into the pool. I'm always very insecure about my swim ability even though I seem to hold my own in races. There's just something about someone watching you just to see what you're doing wrong (or doing right). I think people who were never swimmers as young people, meaning having a swim background, really don't ever quite match up with technique. God knows, I've been trying for three years, but that damn swim gene isn't in my DNA.

I do think the swimming will get easier for you. It's a lot for your mind and body to take in. You're trying to develop muscle memory and that takes a lot of practice. I believe that frequent swims, even if just for 20 minutes, practicing what you're learning, is more beneficial than marathon swim sessions.

Again, congrats on the swimming. Keep us posted on your progress.

Coca can be addictive. I don't really have problem with weight, but I am trying not to drink coca kind of drinks after I read that body takes one hour to recover from it.
There is so much sugar, that companies add acid to drink so we can drink it, otherwise you wouldn't be able to swallow it. Its hard to cut it completely, but good to think about what happens to your body.
Here is more or less what I read before:

"Drinking soda is bad for your health in so many ways; science can't even state all the consequences.
Here's what happens in your body when you assault it with a Coke:
Within the first 10 minutes, 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. This is 100 percent of your recommended daily intake, and the only reason you don't vomit as a result of the overwhelming sweetness is because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor.
Within 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, and your liver responds to the resulting insulin burst by turning massive amounts of sugar into fat.
Within 40 minutes, caffeine absorption is complete; your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, and your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream.
Around 45 minutes, your body increases dopamine production, which stimulates the pleasure centers of your brain - a physically identical response to that of heroin, by the way.
After 60 minutes, you'll start to have a sugar crash.  "

awareness is the first key

some things i could cut out entirely; other things i had to cut down gradually; others i could only cut down, but never out entirely.

ever had the 1/2 and 1/2 coke? i forget what it's called, but if it doesn't make you puke ... it's worth a try.

12 oz can instead of 20 oz  bottle

two days off a week

just some ideas for you and anyone else trying to modify intake of something ...

CONGRATULATIONS! That's a milestone.

Being a beginner at anything, particularly any physical + coordination pursuit, IS very hard. And you didn't quit.

My advice is keep doing what you're doing. persevering. It WILL click for you, and it does take time. Nobody except Mozart ever learned to play piano well in one lesson either.

x 2 on all of that!  It gives me lots of hope that I will love swimming one day (not that I don't like it, but I feel I could love it if I could get half-way descent at it - okay, maybe just if I could swim faster than the guy that is always in the lane next to me that never puts his head in the water when he swims - but easily laps me!)

Another minor snafu today that was a continuation from Monday.  Hard to swim without a swimsuit unless I want to get locked up and band from the gym; oh well.  Yoga instead and nutrition today is I'm going to get yelled by the family because I ate all the good leftovers.

Yesterday and today were my first medium/long rides outdoors in the cold (30's). Anyone have any tips for riding in the cold. I have never rode too much (some MTBing) this time of year. I wore Bacalva, Underarmor cold gear turtle neck, standard jersey, underarmor compression tights, standard bibs, wool liner sock, standard cycling sock, full finger cycling gloves, and fleece gloves. I WAS STILL FREEZING! It took me 10 minutes after I got home just to feel my fingers and toes again. When I left I also had one of the chemical toe warmers.

Any tips???

Don't know if you already saw this (biking tights rec) - but maybe helpful?
