Had a decent weekend but missed my run yesterday after a "camping" trip with friends on Saturday afternoon/night.  Too much to drink and feeling like a semi ran through my head means I didn't get my run in yesterday.  I plan to make it up today and move some other workouts around this week to stay on point.

This week my plan has me staying at my peak from last week, but I think I'm going to add an extra 10% to everything this week, mostly cause I don't feel too bad and having a little extra insurance doesn't sound like a bad thing.

Welcome back Deb!

Darren - I've been to Maui but only once and we stayed in Wailea.  We had a great time.

Right now, I'm in full blown taper mode for my olympic on Sunday.  I can't wait.  We are waiting to hear if it's going to be a wetsuit legal race.  I'm hoping it's not.  Also, just heard that there is a 100 yard section of road on the bike course that has just been ground down in advance of repaving, and it won't be repaved before the event.  So, it should be an adventurous ride over that 100 yards of grooved surface.  I'm considering getting off my bike and running across it so I don't need to worry about the possibility of a flat.  I'll probably drive the course on Saturday and check it out.

Have a nice weekend everyone!

how did it go?

Race went very well!  I was very quick in the water.  Transitions were awesome.  The groovy pavement was no big deal.  And regarding seaweed - had some of that to deal with on the swim.  I can't stand seaweed either.

It was crazy hot out.  I thought I was going to die on the run, but held it together supprisingly well.

I'm very busy today - I hope to post a full report and my race report a little later.

look forward to it.

cwpeters - 2011-07-11 9:58 AM Went out yesterday for my first 50 mile ride.  Didn't go with the group, just went out solo.  Really enjoyed it.  I didn't realize just how much you can sweat during a ride.  I took in about 120 ounces, about 7.5 pounds of fluids during the ride AND still managed to lose 5.2 pounds.  I also realized I have a lot of work to do before MiamiMan in November.
was it seriously hot out there?

I didn't leave the house until about 4:30 pm and it was upper 80's to low 90's temperature wise.  There was a slight tail wind on the way out and head wind on the way back.  I went non-stop for the first 39.5 miles then stopped at a store when I ran out of fluids.

Regarding seaweed - I too scream and flail like a little girl when it tickles my feet, however, compared to the stingrays, jellyfish and sharks in the Gulf, seaweed isn't that bad.

So what do you guys suggest for chafing?  As my runs are getting longer i'm finding my nipples getting eaten alive and I want to go out and get something to put on them so they aren't tingly and sore all day.

I actually tried that a couple weeks ago when I was feeling bad and it didn't really seem to help. I felt okay on the run and figured sweating out the hangover would help.  When I got back I still spent the rest of my day as a worthless member of society and still didn't feel too good.  So this time I decided to just skip it.

Band-aids work well but you may need to shave around them.  I just Body Glide mine along with any other parts that chafe and/or blister.

I just use Vaseline. A generous amount.

I use chamois butter and it seems to work.  Although, in my swim the other day, it didn't work the best.  I don't think i put enough on.  I chafed a bit under my arms.

Great report! Awesome job on your race.  I really liked the suggestion about walking the routes from swim to T1 and from Bike to T2 - I forgot where my bike was too!

BigDH - 2011-07-11 11:10 AM Dave, Read your race report. I HATE seaweed. I still am slightly scared of the open water. Just looking down into the abyss. And when my hand touches something....well I used to freak the f@ck out, like completely. Now I can at least stifle the urge to start flaying my arms and scream for help. Yuck. How did your team do?

Our team did okay, we were the only team so its a little difficult to give an honest assessment. My swim was okay 32/65 so right in the middle. bike was 10/65 which was pretty darn good. Run was 30/65 so overall we would have finished 31 out of 65 if we were one person!

Notice the seaweed hanging from my goggles, across my face and all the way down my arm. I must have spent at least half the swim trying to get that off! Annoying for sure.

Nice work in your race Dave.

Thank you guys for the suggestions on chafing protection, I found some small band-aids that fit perfectly on my nipple so I'll use that until I can get to the running shop and buy something else.

I missed my workout yesterday.  I didn't intend to, but I had a terrible long day at work and getting a work out in just wasn't going to happen.  So I took the day off and sat on the couch and relaxed, I think it was just what I needed.  Today I feel much better and I'm ready to go have a run.

Swam an OWS with a new-to-me Tri group.  The loop was supposed to be .89 miles, and I tried to do 2 loops.  I could have come in after 1 and felt OK - but I paid my $10 and it was my only workout for today.  Sad to say, I was so slow they started to pull in the bouys, so I probably only got 1.7 miles.  Still, it was the longest OWS I've ever done.

After a long stay-cation day of fishing in the AM with my 9 year old son and then canoeing along side my wife in a kayak in the PM, I was thilled to be on a third lake.  3 lakes in 1 day is also a new PR.  Still, last is last.

3 lakes one day, that is kind of cool little record. Mine is kayaking and snowboarding on the same day.

Keep doing the OWS sessions Im sure they will pay off. 1.7m isnt bad! you planning on doing an ironman?

yes thats me with surprisingly enough energy to run to transition. The picture makes me think my suit might be too big, it looks all bunched up in the middle. Any comments from the swimmers?

Hey Dave

I'm hoping to work my way up to an Ironman next season.  I have 1 sprint 20 August, 1 Olympic 11 Sept, and a Maraton 09 October planned.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I took the OWS very easy. I found myself going 5 strokes per breath, that's how easy I was swimming!  In rertrospect, I guess I could have pushed a bit, but I'd never done more than 1 mile in OWS.

I have a feeling mine might be too big as well.  But I don't have a picture of myself in it.  I can feel a little bit of water sloshing around in it on my back.  I don't think it's the worst thing though.  Didn't seem to slow me down any the last time I wore it.

Way to go on your longest OWS!  I'm curious how you were feeling after breathing every 5 strokes for the entire swim?  Do you think you would have swum faster and/or it would have been easier if you breathed every 2 or 3 strokes.  I find that for any distance over about 50 meters, 2 strokes per breath is the best way to go.  The more oxygen you can get into your muscles, the better off you are.

I think you got to be comfortable in the suit right. You don't want to much water in there but you don't want to feel like you can't breathe. Have you ever swam in just a tight speedo or tri shorts? The closer you can get to that feeling of the water skimming over your body when you are in your wetsuit the better I figure.

Did you find you were slowing down in the second loop or was your pace pretty constant.
