Expert 1452 Troy, MI | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED I am "retiring" from training until May. I am going to respect my body and do whatever it is in the mood to do so that I am moving it 30 min/day. I want to see where my body takes me, maybe to running, maybe to swimming, maybe to biking. I am letting my mind and how my body parts feel direct the activity that I will do. No directions, just movement. Its sort of my yoga lifestyle influencing my training. Respect my body and let it direct me. Who knows maybe it will want to do an ironman someday. Today is not that day. That 8k on Saturday really opened my eyes as to how much fitness I have lost and how much recovery I still need from my 3 marathon insanity (for me it was too much). i am going to cut my losses with the coach and the registration fees and let my body guide me. I truly was healthier and thinner before I ever did my 1st event in 2006. Its been down hill from there. I need to regain some fitness and stop beating my body so much pushing in a direction its not ready to go right now. If you want to kick me out of the manatees, I will understand. (notice I put that in smaller print so that you maybe you don't notice this). |

Started off at Davidson College so I'm proud to call many [can'twriteit] as dear friends. Also went to a debate tourney there and y'all were most hospitable. I don't think there's a Gamecocks Tri Team yet, though, is there? There's been a Trojans tri team for at least 10 years. So... how did you end up at Davidson anyway? |

I think it all depends on your body type and body confidence. I'm tall and have been overweight for years and there's still no way I'd run in a swim suit. For me that left either a two piece or a tri-suit. I picked the latter as the former always leave a gap around my midriff which I'd rather not have. I picked one up from Beginnertri and have also got a second hand one from a girl in my club, I love them. I used to wear them with a T shirt to hide unmentionables (flab) but may not this year depending on how I feel about my body when I race. I have to wear a bra under the trisuit for additional support but I've done this all along and don't notice it until I finish (it tends to hold water so gets cold pretty quickly when I stop). I'm convinced that women's tri tops are designed for 20 year old model's bodies. I tried on a whole lot of tops before I found one that I'd be seen in in public! I realize that it's not a fashion show but you do have to feel decent about yourself or you'll never get to the start line. They are! Although I hear Danskin's tops are great. Anyhow, starting out in tri with big boobs and wanting to cover my belly and not have a tri top ride up, I actually bought some men's tri tops ... because men have longer torsos (in general), they are cut longer. Most major manufacturers list the specs for their specific types of tri-tops -- may want to measure yourself (over boobs and belly if you have one, not straight from shoulder to hip) and see how that fits with the length for the tri-top posted. |

Ah yes, you are a Carolinian (currently, anyway!) Actually, Davidson heavily recruited me. I was one of the hamsters in their push to be a truly national and international top liberal arts institution, and to do that they needed to diversify. A LOT. It's gotten much better since I went there (I've visited several times hence and remain in close touch with several professors and many alumni), but it was pretty difficult to be part of the gateway group, so to speak. |

I can certainly understand why it would be an adjustment! It's a beautiful area but not exactly cosmopolitan -- no way to get to Charlotte without a car, etc. It's very cool that you were recruited! I have just completed my longest run so far as part of my plan and took one minute/mile off of my previous run times which makes me really happy plus i had only ten minutes rest before hopping on my bike to fulfil what i should have done yesterday. I even managed to match my best bike time too so feeling really good at the minute. Still got to swim today to keep up with my planned commitment and will be doing so in a couple of hours. Have stopped smoking for 29 hour now so that may have something to do with me feeling so good and running better. One day i hope to be able to post my first 5 miler. So far i am just moving up to 3 and a bit. What do the Gamecocks do?? (apart from beating up some poor Cornhuskers) Is this a new american sport? I think we should know.
I'm really proud of you Allen -- Keep remembering how great you feel after exercise and how those cigs won't prolong that feeling! |

Veteran 298 Des Moines, IA | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED Hey Group, Hope everyone had a great new year. Mine was pretty uneventful. Put the kid to bed and had a few drinks with my wife, she fell asleep before midnight but I lasted. Woohoo party! I've been hesitant to jump on any piece of machinery because it seems everything I eat gives me a pretty nasty stomach ache. It goes away after about 30 minutes but dealing with that puts working out at the bottom of my "sounds like a good idea" list. I'm hoping to hit a trainer ride tonight for a half hour. It's pretty cold out and I don't want to risk the "guest door" being locked at my secret gym - only to have to make the drive of shame back home. I did get an email from the manager regarding setting up a membership... all good free things must come to an end, that and I left a note saying I worked out because nobody was staffing the desk... figured i'd get some slacker the axe in the process :P Happy new year! Veteran 940 Citrus Heights, CA | Subject: RE: Yanti & Lynn: Manatee Madness Mentor Group CLOSED I completed my first workout of the "training season"--30 minute run on the treadmill--intervals varying speed and incline--the speed part wasn't so bad, but the (very) few minutes that I had to run at a 2% or more incline, I was getting wiped out! Then, as my gym was crazy busy, I cam home and did the strength part of the workout--it wasn't much, 2-3 exercises for the lower body, then the core, then the upper body--and not just lifting weights--mostly body weight exercises with resistance bands or the exercise ball. All in all, I am happy with my efforts tonight... Tomorrow brings a bike workout--a simple 1 hour bike ride--rolling hills and low to moderate effort--I think I'll hit our local bike trail, it runs right along the river, with plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities! (Last year I saw quite a few rattlesnakes on the trail--this made me happy!) I will have to watch out for quails though--they like to run DIRECTLY in front of moving bikes...silly-little-pretty-stupid-birds! Fun day at work today too! I got to help our education dept. "fly" their hawk! Due to his aptitude to flying away, we take a Harris' Hawk out on a creonce to fly him and train him to do specific behaviors--Its cool cause I get to have a hawk land on my hand! Its also cool to watch him fly up and do a flip in the air to catch food bits that we toss him...Sorry, I love to talk about my job--I'm like a goofy schoolgirl about it!

Happily, the damage wasn't as bad as I feared Definitely put on a pound or so, but that is better then I thought it would be. I woke up this am at 5:30 to get in a 5 mile run, but went back to bed when i found out that with sustained winds of 15-25mph, the wind chill temp was in the 20s! I can do 30s, but I don't have any clothing appropriate for 20s. This is not Florida weather. Hopefully, I can squeeze the run in after work. Happy Tuesday everyone!
