Sensei ![]() | ![]() mrbbrad - 2012-08-06 12:49 PM Kido - 2012-08-06 3:34 PM One thing that had me searching the internet is why the 50m shooters were wearing full motorcycle looking leathers to shoot. After 15 minutes of searching, no luck. Thank goodness they explained it in the coverage or it would have been one of those things that would have bugged me for days. And????? Ha! I forgot to say why. The heavy/stiff leathers help them stack/become more ridgid and dampen the impacts to their body from their heart beat. I thought it was for protection, but would kind of random damage from a .22LR could there be? I don't even think the brass is ejected on those rifles to hit your neighbor. But then they explained it. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() mr2tony - 2012-08-06 12:51 PM Kido - 2012-08-06 2:44 PM I dont think it gives him ANY advantage at all. But I dont know -- I have no frame of reference. mr2tony - 2012-08-06 12:35 PM If having those prosthetics are such an advantage as people say, how come he's the only one with them who qualified for the Olympics? IF they're so great, then it should just be double-amputees out there. He's my new favorite Olympian because he's been able to qualify despite having no legs. haha! That's his arguement and I explained why it's not totally valid. If they are a huge advantage, that would be happening. But not getting a huge advantage doesn't exlude ANY advantage. And I'm sure sure if anyone should be getting an unfair advantage no matter how small... But as it stands. I'm completely happy he is there and love the story and think he's great. That's the thing, no way to tell. Reminds me what I heard in HS all the time. Short guys would ask if I could do a 360 dunk and if I said "no" they say "man, if I was as tall as you, I would be doing 360's and be all above the rim..." I thought I could reason with them and say, "you don't know, maybe if you were as tall as me you would be uncordinated and slow because you also weigh more". No way to tell because he can't magically be taller overnight. Just like you can't give him legs over night to do a direct comparrison. |

No way to tell because he can't magically be taller overnight. Just like you can't give him legs over night to do a direct comparrison. With the blades he has no ankles for flexion or to be able to propel himself forward, no muscles to be able to strengthen with training and/or lifting weights, and starts slower off the blocks. There's no mechanical advantage. I think it comes down to the fact that he's an amazing athlete, no matter if he has prosthetic legs or not. The one thing I don't agree with is that he's going to compete in the Paralympic games after the Olympics. I feel that if you're going to compete at one, you don't also get to compete at the other. |

In front of the other half, I see no problems there as he has to put up with the good, bad, smelly, and losing at farting contests. In public, however, is completely different and something that I'd rather not do. |

The one thing I don't agree with is that he's going to compete in the Paralympic games after the Olympics. I feel that if you're going to compete at one, you don't also get to compete at the other. But the blades are lighter so faster leg turnover, more efficient "springs", and don't fatigue... I'm going to say it one more time. NOTHING against the guy and I'm glad he's there. REALLY glad. Loved every minute and really wanted him to make the finals. It would have even been cool if he won. IF there is an advantage or disadvantage, we can't say for sure - even if it's as small at 1% either way. That's all I'm saying. And with that grey area, there will always be debate. Perhaps it was good he didn't podium, because everything thinks "how sweet" and "good for him"... and no one feels threatened (except for maybe the guy that didn't make the south african team because if it?) But if he WINS? Or someone like him? The battles will be crazy. And if there are any improvements, they will have to review each case by case and be open to law suits like his (which I'm glad he won, in this case). No matter what, if they judge it's no significant advantage, I will trust the OIC and cheer him on. It COULD be a slippery slope, but I'm glad I can just pop some popcorn and let the OIC and athletes battle it out. Sort of reminds me of the golf cart battle that's going on in the PGA. |
