Jon-Have a great time at your first Oly! In my first season, my A-race was an Oly and I really enjoyed it. I think it's a great distance; it's a lot like a 10k: you can go hard, just don't go too hard! Your estimated finish time seems solid, good luck!

I'm officially back to a "regular" world. The last couple weeks have been a whirlwind for me: I moved from SC to TN, and, luckily, didn't miss too much as far as training goes. Fortunately, being a teacher, I have this summer to settle in before I have to figure out my workout/work schedule, so I'm lucky in that regard. The GF and I did a long bike on Wednesday and it felt good, but I've also worked in a weights routine twice this week. I've never done weights before in my life, so that's something new! I've also got my first "local" race this weekend: a sprint called Dragonfly in Sardis, MS. It'll be an interesting race: first with the GF (who's fast!), first in the area, and the first without my old training buddy, Nate. Up until this weekend, we did literally every single race together, so I'll be breaking the cardinal rule of nothing new on race day :/ I'm taking today off to let my body recover from a relatively heavy week of training. It's nice to be back!

Jamie...so happy for you. It's been a whirlwind of a few months. Sad that you and Nate can't share so much anymore, but I'm sure you're girlfriend is better looking. Good luck to you in your new city, new home, and new school. Hope Gus transitioned well, too.

I'm heading to Jason's FAVORITE STATE in the United States....OHIO....on Father's Day. Will spend the week with my parents. Sadly, Frieda Marie Felt cannot come along. While she (Frieda Marie Felt) fits in my new car, and the 3 dogs fit in my car, all 4 do not fit in there together. My dad will help me install a hitch receiver while I'm there, so I'll be one step closer to having a hitch mounted bike rack.

I've ridden my bike 3 out of the last 4 days....merely 60-100 minute rides, and it's made a HUGE difference in saddle comfort. I hope I don't lose the 'toughening up' I've gained this week when I don't ride for 7 days.

I've also had to revamp my race schedule for the summer/fall. I originally intended to do 3 or 4 sprint/Olympic races in July/August/September, but I now have a monthly car payment...something I haven't had since 2009. Need to save my pennies. That $1500 we discussed earlier would come in handy now!

Hey everyone, my race is over! I had a really great time; it was a really well-organized event and I really enjoyed the course. I'll do a RR later, but I had a good race, came in 7/14 in my AG. There were some fast guys, so I'm really happy with that. I was 2" behind 6th place, but 8" ahead of the next guy, so I literally never saw anyone in my AG on the course. The GF was fast as always, winning her AG! All in all, it was a good day! Long run for me tomorrow, hope everyone else enjoys their Sunday.

Good work. A positive race experience always helps carry the post race emotions that much higher.

I did a 3 sport day today.
The pond was freezing after a recent downpour, I spent a lot of time knee deep trying to convince myself to just jump in. When I finally did I jammed out a 0.5 mile swim mach 10 style.
A 30 minute fartlek run around the pond and down a nearby road.
1 hour trainer with some short intervals.

Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there.
I can't confirm it, but there are some clues that point to me getting a bike jersey for a present.
I am just that good at connecting dots: daughter came home with a hat from a local outdoor retailer (hmmmm....what else was she buying there with Mom?)

Congrats on a great race Jamie.  I have to ask, do you ever get chicked by your GF?  How does that feel?

Jamie-nice job. I had checked results earlier and you had a good race. There are usually a few folks from down this way that head up for the race. Nice job....and I noticed that you finished ahead of your GF! You have a great season going...keep up the good work.

I'm headed out for an hour run and hour  easy ride. Everyone enjoy your day!

Just finished up a long, slow, hot run this morning! The heat and humidity are definitely here, and I was still feeling it from yesterday's race!

With regards to getting chicked, the GF is definitely the better athlete. She's a pretty elite swimmer, she swam in college, so she's always going to be ahead of me by the end of the swim. I'm faster on the bike and run, but not by a huge margin, so if I don't bring my A-game, I can definitely see myself getting beat! Yesterday was our first tri together, but we're both doing IM Chattanooga, and her IM Arizona was really solid, whereas mine was kind of a disaster, so that will be interesting!

I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend, and Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there!

Well, the first one is out of the way. The oly that is. I don't have the official times but it was something like 2:53:XX so says my watch. Overall I'm ok with it all. My goal time was 2:50 but once I saw the hills, forget it. I'll put a race report together but I went about 27/1:23/55. The swim went great. I had myself down for 32 minutes, or a 1:50 pace, but I was 1:34 which makes me think the course was a bit short. Regardless of the time, it felt good. Good sighting, didn't overly exert myself, kept moving well, definitely the best swim I've had to date and a great confidence booster going forward. You wouldn't believe T1 if you saw it yourself. 1/4 to 1/2 mile trail run back to the bike and I'm talking legit trail. Steep, rocks, roots, puddles, it was insane. I brought my shoes down to the lake because I heard it was nasty, but words do it no justice so my T1 was like 7 minutes. The bike I didn't want to cook but it was really hilly. People were standing up, really grinding up the hills, I never left my seat. Just stayed even keel and averaged right around 19, which really was the plan. My HR was well controlled the entire time, save the first 2 miles which were uphill and crazy, but very rarely did anyone pass me without me getting back. The sprint was on the same course and I had a couple guys constantly on me and we'd leap frog, then when they got off after the first loop I was pissed. Here I am pacing myself for another loop and they're done haha. The run was brutal. First mile was straight up hill, second mile was 1/2 down and then straight up. 3rd was just up, up, up. Then it was flat for maybe 1/2 a mile and I got into a great pace but got smacked upside by another hill. I knew I had to cook the last 2 miles to get home in 2:50 but this monster hill crushed my dreams.

I definitely learned a lot, which really was a big part of the mission today. I knew after my first sprint I was kind of upset about not torching the course, but this time I knew what I wanted to take away. I'm psyched about the swim. The bike was not an easy course and I did exactly what I wanted. The run, eh, you can't win em all. Very tough course. Now off to go get ice cream with the boy. Enjoy your fathers day all you dads!

Jamie...just curious...have you seen the run course at Chattanooga? From what I'm hearing, you might want to invest in some hill training. A local coach (Jeff Lukich of Drive Multisport) said the bike will be easy compared to the run.

That said...48 miles for me on the bike. Friend of mine who's doing IMCHOO had a 70 mile/3 mile bike/run brick to do. She's doing a lot of training on Range Road at the local army base which is a 24 mile loop with about 1300 feet of climbing in each 24 miles. She went around 3 times, and I joined her on the last 2. Nothing fast, but lots and lots of hills to climb. Plus, even with all the climbing, my saddle felt pretty good even after 3 hours.

Congratulations Jamie and Jon! Very nice race results.

Looks like everyone is putting in a lot of solid training this month.

Checked another sprint triathlon off the list today.2nd in my AG. Race recap is in my BT blog if anyone is interested.

Nice job Boys! I got 44 miles in yesterday and 52 in today. Lots of climbing, my legs are trashed. Played 18 with my son. We kicked it around all over the place but we had fun. Happy Father's day.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!! It's summer here. I cannot get a training rhythm going and I cannot get on the family PC to log what I've done it. By the time it's my turn, I'm too tired!

Olympic distance this weekend. Great job on the races, and good luck with the upcoming ones!

Happy Monday all!!

Survived my first 1.2mile swim at the Patriot Half on Saturday. I'd say pretty good execution. If my GPS was right, then I swam extra (which I totally believe). And at THAT pace I'm thrilled So now if I can just figure out how to swim straight before my 70.3 solo debut in September I'll be good to go!

I put up a RR if you are interested - it's pretty short.

I saw Jon's RR - great job.

Still looking for Jamie's

I'm looking forward to being home for the next several weeks with nothing on the race calendar until Mid July (well, except for my weekly series).

Have a great day all!!

Wow, great weekend of racing. You guys are putting in some fabulous work and seeing the results.

I had a very nice weekend in Northern Michigan. We went without the kids and it was a very nice break. Ate at places that we would not go with the kids and got to spend time doing whatever we wanted with out hearing, "I'm bored, I'm hungry, what are we going to do now?....."

Our place up north is training paradise. Lots of trails to run on, lots of really nice roads with good shoulders and little traffic and all of Lake Michigan to swim in. It is probably up to about 60 degrees in the Lake so acceptable with wetsuit. I didn't bring mine with me so no swimming. I did get in some biking and running. Not my best weekend of training ever but made it happen. I'm having some recurring issues with my neck that put a damper on the workouts. Wah, wah, wah.

Suzy, funny you should ask about "getting chicked." There was a very contentious thread on "another site" asking if that phrase is sexist. It was a fun read. I even contributed a little. My wife usually looks at the results and lets me know how many women beat me at an event. Everyone, male or female, that beats me bothers me..... There are some truly fast women out there. I think about five or six women beat me at American Triple-T and they were so far ahead of me that it wasn't even close. When you are getting beat that badly, it really makes it less of an issue. Anyways....... Of course, at my 10K a few weeks ago the first female was right behind me. Knowing that she was back there, breathing down my neck, might have pushed me to put out that little extra effort. Of course, again, I was trying to let no one pass me, male or female.

My summer months should be a training mecca, but I've spent more time in the doctor's office in the last 3 week's than I've gone in the last 5 years!

I developed some horrid' lump' on my back on June 7. Went to an urgent care on June 8. Started me on an antibiotic, horrid painful lump subsided. 6 days later, new horrid lump appears on my back. Back at my own doc today. Lanced & drained horrid lump 2. Sends off a sample to see if we're dealing with MRSA and switched my antibiotic. The great news about the antibiotic (note sarcasm) is that is causes diarrhea, oftentimes severe. Yay. That should be fun during a long ride or run. ??

I haven't been allowed to swim for ages (first from cryosurgery on my face then from giant pus filled things on my back). I might be able to get in a pool later this week if the sample comes back negative for any superbugs. No open water for a week.

I'll stop whining now. I'm just frustrated. @$#%\*£€_?&#!!!

Jason- I don't really think of the term "getting chicked" as offensive, but then again, I'm not a woman. It seems complimentary to me, if anything. If someone is faster than me, they just are; it doesn't matter if they're a man or a woman. On race day, everyone is an athlete, and what I want to do is, in the descending order:

1-make/beat my personal goal
2-beat others in my AG
3-beat anyone else

So, I'm racing myself mainly, then others like me, then anyone else.

Nancy-sorry to hear about the health issues! That must be a real pain, pun intended, during peak training time! Hang in there!

Light day today; I'm really drained from the race Saturday, long run Sunday, and then mowing the grass in the heat this morning. I'll hit the gym for some weight training later, which is a recent thing for me. Anyone else weight train, along with SBRing? Thoughts?

Oh, and here's my RR from Saturday; I really enjoyed the race: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid...

Nancy-your frustration is warranted. Hope things clear up quickly.

Jamie-I have incorporated strength work into my routine since the first of the year. Typically 1-2 20-30 minutes sessions a week. Mostly dumb bell and machine upper body work along with some core and squats/lunges. Had neglected the squats/lunges for several weeks and hit them hard on Friday....was super sore and tight in my glutes Saturday and could feel it on the bike. I think it has some benefits.

Sorry about the health woes. It really is a drag.

I have found that the over the counter lactobacillus (marketed as gut health pills?) tablets seem to offset the diarrhea issues tremendously. We keep a bottle of them around the house in case any one ever ends up on antibiotics. Augmentin is one of the worse offenders when it comes to GI upset and someone in our house had a two week course of this without any real issues as long as they took the gut health pills. FWIW.

Tri clubs offer all of us, from beginner to advanced athlete, a venue in which we can realign our perspective of what “fast” and “far” are, pushing us to new and greater heights of performance.
