ERIN on SHOULDER INJURY

Nobody, including me, likes to take my advice on injuries, but it's really damned good . [Insert standard caveat about how it's best to see a doctor to rule out inobvious but possibly serious similar conditions].

Ice is the unsung hero of most common sports injuries. Ice, ice, ice. Up to 20 min., 3x/day or more. Slap a bag of frozen peas on. NSAIDs. Give it a few days' rest at least (I generally go with when all/nearly all symptoms are gone + 2 days).

Look closely through your logs (or your mind, but here's a reminder to MYSELF about WHY it's really good to log everything) to see where signs of strain or pain first appeared. Look at your yardage/intensity at that time. Now go back a workout or two and that, done easy, is what you can do in the pool now. But if it hurts, stop the workout, give it another couple of days, and then when starting, start even easier.

Thank you, Yanti! That's some great advice, especially about when to go back (I like the pain-free +2 days plan) and how to use my logs. Between my logs and, funnily enough, my posts in this thread, I was able to figure out that it was my 12/21 swim that started things on the wrong track. I remember being pretty sore after that swim and having some pain in my arm that I attributed to soreness, but in hindsight was probably the start of an injury. I took a week off swimming due to Christmas, and then right after I started up again, the pain came back. Of course, the irony is that my 12/21 swim was pretty much the best swim I've ever had. This sucks! I've been so pleased with my swimming progress, and now it feels like I have to take a big step back. Still, I feel much better now knowing what's going on and having a plan to get back to action, when I'm ready. I think I might add another run into my weekly training plan while I'm waiting for the arm to feel better. Now off to watch Leslie on Youtube!

Erin, sorry to hear about the shoulder and I do hope it heals quickly. I agree I hate following any advice but every bit that Yanti has given me has worked. The hard part is holding yourself back and doing it but I guess with time we grow wiser and know when to take it easy. Even right now for some reason I'm not a 100% up to par hence I mix some breast strokes in with my swimming.

wow Hector - that last sentence is just kind of hanging there - begging for a comment!

I agree with you on fearing our ladies. We have a pretty articulate group and I know they could verbally batter us into submission if we become lazy in our training. So is that a bad or a good thing? LOL

Shawn:  Sounds like you have some good goals for this year.  I'm also thinking about trying an Olympic distance at the end of the season.  We'll see how the sprints go first.

I signed up for my first tri yesterday!!!  My first will be the Parris Island Sprint on 3/15.  I'm SO excited!!

Good on ya! Now you have something specific to train towards and should make your planning so much easier since you know the race date. What are the distances for this race?

I also just registered for the Superseal (Oly) on April 6th. Someone on this site once said if you put your money on the line then your more commited and at $90 bucks I'm commited.

I just remembered who told me that! Spokes told me! Sorry I had a random thought.

ShawnC13 - 2008-01-02 11:08 PM Hey everyone ran another 5. something K tonight and wow am I stiff not sure why stupid trails yesterday. Anyway just posting in here some of my goals for 08 the more I say them and type them the more they are engraved in my head. 2 sprints this year (maybe oly at season end depends on my swimming) 2 half marathons to lose I am thinking 30 lbs. I lost 17.2 from Jan 2 of 07 to Jan 2 of 08 and that was mostly from not drinking the soda pops. I was down 24 but came back up. So this year is increased focus on my weight well not on my weight but what I put into my body that leads to the extra weight. So if I remember I will post in here with updates on when I weigh myself usually once a week or every 2 weeks so if I slack off you guys can kick me in the A$$ to focus again cause I know you will

Ok Shawn and only because you asked, if you slack off I will be the A$$ kicker, I mean a motivator.

that is what we all need that "motivating" kick in the arse from time to time. HAPPY belated NEW YEARS to everyone....today is a great day for some training!!!!!

I really didn't get that cold, which is odd.  Just when I was changing my clothes in the car!  I am wishing I was doing some working out today, though.  The kids are NOT cooperating with me.  Two days in a row.  Mama is getting fed up with this.  I know I need to be patient as it is only our second day back in our 'normal' routine.....but I am impatient.

Thanks for the input on the wetsuit.....I am hoping to get a great deal!  I just took on a two day job at the medical school which should pay for it. Yay!  I don't like to work but once in a while I can manage--he he.  You know the Seinfeld episode where Kramer acts out diseases for med students?  Yeah, I do that!

The hard part is holding yourself back and doing it but I guess with time we grow wiser and know when to take it easy. Even right now for some reason I'm not a 100% up to par hence I mix some breast strokes in with my swimming.

Thanks for the tip, Hector -- when I go for my next swim lesson, I'm definitely asking the coach to teach me how to stroke some breasts! The sacrifices I make for training...

Shawn, you should be very afraid, especially now that you've put your goals out in public. Ladies, which one of you has Dee's whip?

Dayum, you guys have been a bunch of busy bees (manatees?) today with all this talk of swimming and breaststroking and whatnot.

Laura, super congrats on signing up for Parris! We are all very excited for you and feel really privileged to be alongside you on this journey.

Good news on my neck: I feel ridiculously better after getting adjusted yesterday and have generally been improving, so five days out I'm not too bad. Unfortunately, my cold has steamrolled me and I'm couchin-chicken-soupin it.

That's fantastic news on the neck, Yanti. I know that was giving you a lot of pain. You probably posted about this in your logs but I'm too lazy to go back and check right now -- what do you mean by getting it "adjusted"? Do you get regular massages or work with a chiropractor at all?

Now at least you can wait out the rest of the cold without the pain in your neck. That's progress. (But I'm still grumbling over how greedy you are -- two dates this weekend! Leave some for the rest of us! *g*)

Swim talk:

During the last week of December I had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time in the pool.  I made some observations during this time that I thought I would share with the group – this will probably take a few posts, so it doesn’t get too overwhelming – I hope you find them helpful – tonight’s topic - Speed

Speed: common mistakes made when trying to go faster

Stroke:  Speeding up the stroke and taking more strokes in an effort to go faster.  Increasing the number of strokes you take, can actually slow you down – (analysis of the swim stroke shows that efficiency matters most.).  Increasing the stroke count and the churn just tires you out and doesn’t move you through the water any faster.  Make more ease and flow, less noise and splash, your primary goal – increases in efficiency will follow. (drills that help you understand and reduce your stroke count are invaluable)

Kick:  Often when people are trying to increase their speed they have a tendency make their kick bigger – when you bend your leg to create a bigger kick, it causes the upper leg to move down and creates drag.  This drag can create such resistance that it cancels out the propulsion from your foot, which will slow you down

Overall technique – never ever do somersaults up and down the lane, not only is it incredibly inefficient – it makes the swimmer(s) in the lane next to you laugh while they are swimming and that is dangerous (and yes, this is based on an actual observation)

Swimming is all about efficiency and being streamlined in the water. This may be difficult to imagine, but try and imagine yourself looking like a torpedo as you swim – even as though you are swimming through a tube, keeping yourself as streamlined as possible

Let me know if there is anything within this that you would like me to elaborate on – well, with the exception of the technique for somersaulting up and down the lane – that is waaaaay beyond my level of expertise

LMAO

well, it's actually Cat's - but I borrowed it

Dee has the magic wand - well sometimes it's also a whip - the girl has skills!
