Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed Pilot, You learned a lot today. Salt water tastes yucky. Its part of the game. I find the strongest sport drink I can find and use it to get the salt water taste out of my mouth right after the swim. You learned you need more open water swims and more bricks. Good to know that before xterra. |

Expert 938 Orange County, California | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed PR'ed the half, but missed sekrit goal of 2 hours. Upper Hamstrings and lower glutes got sore around mile 10, my stride shorted up, and my pace dropped. Probaly due to most of my runs being 8 1/2 miles and only a couple of 14 milers and those were 6 weeks ago. |

I remember when my swim coach had the team do that for practice. as punishment for starting a food fight at wendy's and that exactly what that workout is punishment. but none the less good work like everyone else said. I'll be glad to get that much in a month. |

Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed Believe it or not, I felt completely fine afterwards. No sore shoulders, even today! I nailed the nutrition and kept a good pace. I also went in thinking I'd be in the water for over four hours, so it was a nice surprise to be finished well before that. Congrats on the PR and the mini, this stuff is so addicting isn't it? |

Pro 4216 Sous Mon Diadème | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed redlv - 2008-01-04 1:15 AM Ok, since you guys are up too (no good) hows about a little guidance here. A. I've been REALLY clumsy lately during workouts including the multi-hour hike I did over NY's where I kept dropping things. It only seems to happen when my HR is really high...my bf said I was dehydrated? Ahem. Cough. Use of specific term not going unnoticed . I would really take a look at nutrition and hydration as your BF suggested. The BF is probably right. B. Numb feet during spin class, would bike shoes be more appropriate to clip in?? Yes . You need shoes with harder soles. Most spin bikes have SPD compatible pedals but double check. I always recommend mtb shoes for spinning because of the extra rubber on the sole. Floors of spin rooms tend to be very slippery and I've seen more than one participant bite it in road shoes. This would hold especially true if the hydration/clumsiness thing is still in play... C. My Polar F11 is dying. Rather than replace the battery and strap and thingy, I want a new one, any suggestions? (I really like to swim with the hrm, garmin doesn't like that)...who want's a garmin? LOL... should I send you my address immediately??!! I would consider a Polar RS200 with a foot pod (I think it's the sd model but not sure). This model is run specific whereas the F6 and F11 are "general fitness" HRMs. If you're not in a huge hurry and you want to stick with Polar, I might be able to hook you up a little bit. D. So, what good motivational training books are you/have you read lately? Discuss. Goodnight Gorilla, Thomas the Tank, Touch and Feel Puppy... oh wait... nevermind... Pro 4216 Sous Mon Diadème | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed Lwoodtri - 2008-01-04 6:14 AM Hi redlv, A. How high of a heart rate are we talking? A 2% dehydration can account for a 20% loss in performance, so clumsiness could certainly be one indicator of dehydration, it could also be an indicator of a bonk as sometimes it is hard to determine which until it is too late. Over long workouts (many hours) , a high heart rate could also be a result of cardiac drift, which is when your heart rate rises over time even at a constant/same workload. B. Numb feet, during spin class is definitely a result of probably using rubber sole shoes? the soles of Bike shoes are generally either carbon or a harder plastic so that when you pedal, the shoe does not bend. If the shoe bends as you pedal, it results in a loss of power, and a cut of blood circulation to the foot, causing numbness! C. I use a Garmin/HR for the bike and a Polar for the runs. D. I am currently reading "Going Long", Great book thus far for Iron Distance training and philosophy ( Wish i had read before doing my 1/2IM's) a great book I have read in the past that I still consult quite often are the books by Chris Carmichael on endurance dieting and training and one last good read is Chi-Running . . I found it quite interesting and helped to mentally think about how I run to run better! Have a great Day! redlv - 2008-01-04 1:15 AM Ok, since you guys are up too (no good) hows about a little guidance here. A. Pro 4216 Sous Mon Diadème | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed givemashot - 2008-01-04 6:42 PM Hey guys/gals. I finally got to the gym today! I'm feeling good enough to workout again, but though I'd avaoid the pool until next week. I've been reading Triathlon Training Basics by Gale Bernhardt. I like one of the training plans in the book, so I think I'm gonna do that one. It's a 12 week plan, so if I have to back off (if my joints rebel again) I won't feel too wussy. If I was doing a 20 week plan and had to back off I would feel truly inept. No good reason, I just would. Today's really warm here-like 46 degrees. All the snow is melting, and it's really windy. 30-40 mph windy. Gusts have been 45-50 mph, and tonight likely to hit the 70+mph mark. The storm that's currently dumping several feet of snow in the Sierra Nevadas is headed our way tomorrow. I'll be working both Saturday and Sunday, though, so I have to go out in the storm. On a bright note, that gets me out of using the snow blower Hee hee... I like your positive thinking on that!!! It was 70 degrees (is that better, Noz? ) in the ATL today. I'm glad you found a plan you feel comfortable with and sister... I have so many joint issues it's not funny. Never feel bad about listening to your body when it comes to that and doing what's best for it. You have to look at the big picture... better to be prudent now than pay dearly for ignoring it down the road. I'd rather skip a few runs in the present and avoid major surgery and possibility of not being able to run too much in the future, ya know?

Pro 4216 Sous Mon Diadème | Subject: RE: Milaminute and Sparco's Group - Closed gygyhawk - 2008-01-05 2:23 PM Hope everyone had a lovely Sat. a.m. I did a slow 25 min. (2.4) mile run. It was great because my HR stayed in Z2 and I didn't have to stop and walk. However, my hips have been feeling tight after running and cycling, and the inside of my knee(medial) like below inner thigh, was feeling tight after the run today. Has anyone else experienced this? I've been stretching after workouts, but I'm wondering if I need to do a different stretch or stretch on my rest days as well. While training for my 1/2 mary I didn't cross train and my knees were sore and my lower back eventually kinked up. With a few weeks of rest it all got better, but I want to avoid it happening again. Any suggestions? Hey Gygy! Great job on the run . I hope the link I put in your inspires was helpful. I liked that it was specific for women. For anyone else interested... |

Where's your sense of adventure. Part of the fun in that is trying to figure out the actual distance in the dinky pool... |
