dbw27 - 2009-08-01 7:40 PM Congrats on doing Ironman Switzerland!

Umm.. just curious.  Aside from travel costs, isn't it a lot to do these international events - like shipping your bike and stuff? I imagine you have a dedicated bike case?

yours truly,

dbw27

Finally....Nice avatar!   Roth registration is a lot cheaper than any North American IM.  IMCH (Switzerland)  is about the same as a  North American IM after all the fees.  My tri club has boxes that our membership fee pays for. And it's not much more to carry the bike to Europe than it was to carry it to my HIM.

Alright -  quick family story this evening.  My daughter (she's 8) is not physically gifted, she is uncoordinated and not especially athletic.  Developmentally, she is all brain (thank goodness).  Any way, after I finished my last tri, we were out for Sunday brunch with my tri buddy Johnny and she announces she is going to a triathlon.  Small issue  - she can barely dog paddle and couldn't ride a bike.  In the last week and half, the bike riding finally clicked and she is riding but still having a little trouble making turns and getting started.

So tonight, after going wide on a turn, she runs square into the fire hydrant and it pitches her forward onto the handlebars and she crashes and hurts herself a little.  I was worried that this would set us back again, but she gets up and says "Let's keep going Daddy - pain is temporary, quitting is forever."  She then got going again and finished the last of the mile and half strong.

I am sooo proud of her!  She says that is going to be her new motto now.

Sorry, but I had to share.

THAT is AWESOME!!!!!

That is fantastic!  Sounds like you are growing up a winner!  What a great reflection on her parents. :-) Kids can be surprising and amazing sometimes rolled into one.

Fattyfatfat:

Ya.  It took me a while on the avatar. I realized that my pictures were too big. Today, a day when I was doing absolutely nothing but watching movies and hanging out on here and even miraculously slept in until like 11 (meaning I was exhausted - last tri + no sleep = dead dbw27), was a great day for shrinking pictures and uploading them. :-D

Ahhh.. it sounds like you belong to a great tri club.  I am thinking of joining a tri club myself here in NYC (aside from TNT with whom I train all over the place!)  I understand I might get a little different/better insight and might get better.

Thanks for telling me.  I didn't realize that the international tris weren't so bad.  Thanks a lot actually.  I wanted to do an olympic in spain and maybe one in london.  I hope to do a HIM next year in California (home town) and hope to do my 'first' of things back there at home where my family and friends can come be supportive, but for things I've already done (i.e. olympics), I would like to try some elsewhere.

God is good. So far I have been able to do olympics coast to coast in both 'homes':  California and New York. :-) Yay God!

Soooo..have a great trip/time!  This is probably a great time to go overseas because the world economy is so bad. I just need more cash. :D

Yours truly,

dbw27

I just completed 21.1 kms..It took a while. Just over 2 1/2 hrs but i did it. Longest run to date was 15k.I planned on doing 2 loops around this river path of roughly 10k. I tried to talk my way out of the 2nd loop, but I pushed my way through it. Walked a bit of it obviously at this pace, but wow running is so mental for me. I need to just shut my mind off sometimes and not think about what I am doing. It is so easy to talk myself out of things.
It does sound hokie(sp?), but if you want something you just have to believe in yourself.
Off to do a little cold soak!!

Awesome Run Dude!  I agree with running and pushing yourself is VERY mental.  You can do alot more than you THINK you can.

fattyfatfat - 2009-08-01 5:18 PM Alright gang, now its on.... I just registered for Ironman Switzerland!  8.1.2010

Jarrett gave me the thumbs up last week.  I was torn between Roth and Switzerland.  I'll get to Roth one day.

I'm so freakin' excited.

Awesome!  Your A$$ better turn into a runner pretty quickly.  That will be an incredible venue to pull this off.  You can do it!  It will be fun for us "spectators" watching you train for this.

After a day of volunteering(calgary 70.3) all I can say is Mirinda Carfrae,Lindsay Corbin, Magali Tisseyre, Catriona Morrison.(Boys- google images check it out!!)
Awesome race. Very warm out. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Will be back next year to race it.
Very inspirational - volunteering vs racing. You get lots of thanks but as well you see everyone. Like 1600 runners coming past us!! Big,small, tall, short. There was a blind man- Brian Cowie. Very amazing story if you want to check him out.(5hr 26 minutes!!)http://www.speedtheory.ca/blog/?p=765

I'm going to get a little corny, but this is amazing sport we are part of. People from all walks of life can and are a part of it. I really drew something from this and hope to bottle it up next time I feel like I'm sucking wind. I'll remember all the others out there pushing through it.

Evenin all,

Race went ok today, crushed last years time by probably 30 minutes, haven't seen the results yet.

It's odd doing a race where you have no real goals.

Just  did this race purely for fun, Though 2 weeks of racing in the rain gets old.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

I don't think it is corny at all.   After watching my first IM WI, I felt the exact same way.  Seeing so many different types of people finish is really inspiring.

Wedding is finally behind me.  Had fun, but glad it is over.   I am heading into a big recovery week before my Oly on Sunday and then only a month until HIM time. YIKES!

Wow, trying to catch up....

Suzy - beautiful couple.  Hope the weekend was everything you (and the bride) hoped it would be

John - very cool about Switzerland!  I know a few people signed up to race with you

Barry - hope the meds have kicked in and you are feeling better!

Trevor - awesome run this weekend.  Way to break through!

Sam - I know what you mean about the cost of a movie + popcorn + soda + candy.....and I take the kids to the Dollar Store to get the candy before the movie.  I like the $1 movies at Redbox.

Andy - very cool daughter you are raising there!

Tony - can't wait to see the race report!

I think I'm caught up.  If I missed anyone, I'm sorry.

Oh, I want to thank everyone for the suggestions to help get me off coke.   I've tried to incorporate all the suggestions.  Today was the first day I've had one in several days...and it gave me heart burn.  After my bike/run in the rain (pouring at times) I thought I needed it to stay awake to make it through the shopping expedition with the kids....the shopping was still painful and I had heartburn to go along

My understanding is his 'pilot' swims next to him in the water. When they ran by us his pilot was on the inside of the lane closest to the middle and he ran on he outside. No hand on shoulder on anything like that. Was really neat.
I tried to do women's westsuit stripper, but once they said the position didn't exist, I went to run marshal!

Good morning group - I am having one of those Garfield Monday kind of days.  My swim was terrible this morning and my daughter seems to have picked up my son's strep.  So no camp for her and we are off to the doc.  But that always means I have to do my 12 mile run this afternoon in the heat once Tony gets home.  UGH!!!!!!!

Ok, read the site, did 140 situps for my test, so I guess I should start at week 3 column 3 right?

So I am supposed to do these 5 sets 3 times a week right?

This is why I got married so I don't have to worry about the details, I ask Sam to read and tell me the important parts that I need to know aboutLaughing
