SSMinnow - 2010-06-30 5:40 AM Ok peeps.....it's the day to give us the scoop on your upcoming weekend....for those racing, what're you doing?  for those not racing, how're you spending the 4th of July--lots and lots of training or lazing around? DO TELL!

PS...time to post your monthly totals too.

Driving back to the land of Oz to visit the family.  I'm racing a fourth of July 10K again - maybe I'll shoot for a sub 60min since I hit the sub 30 on the 5K.

June's totals started out great and then fizzled.  I have to keep reminding myself I have a half to race in 13 weeks - better get my butt in gear!!!

June's totals:
Bike:6h 49m 13s  - 119.95 Mi
Run:4h 21m 16s  - 23.75 Mi
Swim:3h 43m 16s  - 8750.42 Yd
Strength:3h 00m

The 4th of July has always been one of my favorite holidays, but three years ago it solidified it's spot at the top.  This Sunday we will celebrate our daughter's 3rd Birthday by having a BBQ with family and friends.  We're hoping this year she'll be able to stay up to see the fireworks show.

Doing a Saturday Challenge with the BLV folks (about time too because I've always been timid riding with them on Sat's Challenge rides, but this week's ride is easier than they normally do, right distance, hope I can keep up!), then long run/short recovery swim on Sunday. Then staying home taking care of my dog. Last year (my first year of having her), she freaked out with the fireworks (it's legal in Vegas...so almost everyone was doing it around us), and wouldn't go outside in the proper spot for two weeks...that WAS BRUTAL! So, hopefully some sleepy-feel-good drugs will help.   Plus, I can see the fireworks on the Strip from my house...so not all is lost. :-

Bike:10h 41m 34s  - 100.65 Mi
Run:7h 27m 31s  - 33.86 Mi
Swim:5h 26m 35s  - 14600 M

Kinda low numbers, but compared to May, it's slightly better. New game plan has been set, so you'll see higher run and bike numbers for July. I *would* like to get at least almost twice as much bike in July than June. We'll see what happens!

Too Cool about your daughter's bday!  Yeah, Independence Day ROCKS!!  Ribeyes with mushroom and port wine sauce, aspargus, baked potato, and blue bell ice cream!!!  (Yeah, its a little non-traditional, but it's tasty and me, wife, and daughter's tradition for summer holidays (Memorial, Independence, and Labor Days)...  Friends are welcome, but RSVP!

Doing a 1/2 iron this weekend. Actually its a 2k swim soooooo much longer of a race than a 70.3!!! Going to be a great race. Almost our entire team will be up there racing. ~20 of us. It will be weird though. Going without Michelle and the girls. BIG PLUS- Hotel room by myself WHOOT!!! BIG NEGATIVE - no family on the course to help me. But will have alot of team support. Looking forward to it, and boy do i want to break that 6hr mark.

Article John posted is pretty good. One point ." successful race = a good run. There is no such thing as a good bike followed by bad run, period" My coach was talking about that last week. its home with me after the run I had an my Oly a few weeks back. Whether its a sprint or an Ironman alot of good points in the article.

*raises hand*   QUESTION!

I'm thinking about next year's race plans. I'm still going to stay local, as there's 7 races (including the infamous Silverman) in Las Vegas area (technically, they're in Boulder City and Lake Las Vegas, but still close enough. :-) ). I will do most of them in Sprint/Oly distances.

However, I've been thinking a bit about a 70.3 race.   Is it too early for me to think about it?

How much training experience should a triathlete get before considering doing a half distance? How about full/Ironman? Realistically. :-)  I know there's some people that did Ironman race in their first year.

I think it really depends on how much time you have for training.  If you have the time to put in for 10-15 hr weeks you can do a HIM, and I would guess same goes for IM, but not sure what the time requirement is there only that it's a lot more than the HIM...

Not racing this weekend. Making it a super long weekend as our July 1st holiday is tomorrow so Itook off Friday as weel. Probably not much trainng as my shoulder is getting worse and the doctors have all told me to rest it. I do have to help my daughter move into her new place but hopefully not too much heavy lifting. Maybe she'll have some younger help lined up. I;'m not hiolding my breath though.

Good luck to all our racers  and everyone working out.

To explain John's attempt to be funny, this is a photo of my husband Doug (not our MG DOUGROB) and our 2 daughters (in the green) and a friend's daughter at my sprint a few weeks ago.  The local newspaper was there and the family made the slideshow article.

There are a few of us that are in our 2nd year of racing that have/are doing 70.3 distances. Totally possible. You've got a really strong base on the bike already. And you'll have run the 13.1 miles a few times by next year, doing the LV Half in December.

i'll take a shot a the half.  and will hopefully let you know about IM in a little less than 324 days.  20hrs. 42 min.  not that i'm counting.

i understand silverman is a tough course.  so good choice!  lets put this in temporal perspective to.  you really have 17 months before this race.  that's a lot more time than say next spring.  and you live out there so i'm thinking you can spend some time on the course.  i agree with tony's weekly volume but you can certainly do a little less.  and remember you will only be at max volume a few weeks.

once you kinda get a feel for what its going by looking over some plans and talking to others that have been there, talk it over with your other half.  then sleep on it for a few days then decide.  i you do decide to go for it (i hope you do) stick around here next year and you'll have more than enough support.

perusing your logs briefly, and you know this i'm sure,  but work on that bike a bit more.  trust me on that one.

edit.. volunteer this year if you can

i was never able to get the Plus set up to where i felt good.  so swapped it for the Max.

it took some adjusting.  but not hard.  bring a tool with you on a few rides and dial it in.  it was easier to do on the road rather than the trainer too.

one thing to steer clear of... people say you "must" set it up at such hand such angle... blah blah blah.  john cobb said so (no he didn't).  malarkey!   make it so YOU like it.

how long have you been trying?

Speaking of saddles...I still love the Adamo you swapped for me Andy. It's funny, because they aren't that popular up here as only one store in town carries Adammo, and they are like $200. So alot of people see it on my bike, and kind of give it a weird look.
