No, that would make him happy. Serials tend to want reminded how much they changed people and how they played God doing it. What you think of as a punishment doesn't work on most of the people in jail.

Correct.  They would take trophies if they could many times.

What would REALLY kill him, is if somehow we could fool him into thinking no one cared and his act went unoticed...  But that's impossible.  They want attention, and if we could lock him up and make him think no one cared, it would torture him.

You and I don't seem to see eye to eye on some things, apparently this is not one of them

I honestly don't want to know the shooter's name. Hell, I didn't want the OKC bomber's name or the VT shooter's name published at all either. Why the hell do we want their names to be household words?

I live in Colorado but am in London right now.  I heard about the shooting shortly after it happened because of the time difference.  It is very odd to walk into a London pub thousands of miles from and hear people talking about something happening a mere 40 miles from your home.  My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their familes.

In my world, we never mention the shooter's name on TV.  He is described as being arrested, that is all.  After his trial, it is announced that he has been convicted and sentenced.  We never know his name and he gets no attention.  Others who consider similar acts will not be cowed by prison or the chair, but they will hesitate at a lifetime of further anonymity.

In mine, the killer doesn't even get a gender mentioned, even via pronoun.

Y'know, every now and again the planets DO line up.

I don't believe in capital punishment, but in cases this clear-cut, I have several ideas on punishments worse than death that this absolute piece of scum deserves.

Terrible news...but what in the world is a 6 year old doing out past midnight?  At a PG-13 movie no less?  I also read a report of a 3-month old being shot (thankfully not killed)...but am I an "old fuddy-duddy" for finding that a bit odd?

Very sad for the victims and their families. My thoughts are the same as yours (we tend to agree on parenting stuff).   I remember years ago a young child choked to death on popcorn in a theater and I was very sad but also wondered two things - Why was this kid at this movie, I think it was rated R and who gives a 2 year old popcorn in a dark room??? It's the #1 choking hazard.

I'm with you both on this one. My kids, both HUGE Batman fans, are going to have to be at least 12 before I let them see any of these movies, great as they are.

IIRC serial killer wasn't even a phrase until the '70s or '80s.

But looking through history all three have been in evidence for as long as there's been recorded history. It's only with the advent of world wide immediate news that everyone hears about each

And you are right that this is nothing new... I guess the only thing I can take from that is at least we are still shocked and saddened by it instead of thinking of it as business as usual. I guess that is something.

Too true. As long as there are people ther will be evil ones. Though some of what I've seen makes me wonder if there isn't some sort of mental disease going on here. Only time will tell if the guy is evil, or crazy or both.

You pretty much have to have a mental defect to shoot 71 people out to enjoy a movie.  As sad as this incident is, the interviews with the suspect will be interesting.  In almost all of these cases the person(s) responsible is killed or commits suicide....so there really is not a great "profile" on these killers like there is on other murderers.  Then again, it's possible that the people who commit mass murder are so wacked out that we can't ever get an idea on who may be headed down that road.

6 of my co-workers were shot to death in a similar incident.  I gave up long ago trying to find an answer for it.

My wife and I were talking about exactly this...why would a parent bring a young child to this kind of movie...especially at midnight? really, really, sad. Last night my 13 year old daughter spent the night with my MIL...who lives maybe 2-miles from the theater were the shooting took place. This can happen anywhere.

I'm a family guy....and I hear what you all are saying.  Still......when my kids were that age they'd be asleep....which I'm willing to bet was on the minds of the parents who brought their kids. (not the best, but not the worst idea either, no matter what I'd do)

I wouldn't drag them to a movie so, again, I get what you are saying.

Still....you don't bring them because they may get shot? No.

Parents bring their kids to all kinds of deals.....at least they are with them.  I won't judge.

The only person in this deal I will judge is the azzhole who decided to shoot people who went to a movie.  What a sick, twisted, piece of garbage, moron.

Don't lose perspective.........there is only one bad guy here.

Oh trust me, I think I made it clear that what I would have done to this shooter (mental illness or not!) would be something unprecedented in this nation's history of punishment...of course there's only one person with blood on their hands.

...(and unlike my usual weakness) I was careful not to "judge."  I clearly wrote I "found it quite odd."  I didn't say they "made a bad parenting choice," or that the parent was "a bad parent..." I didn't fall into that trap this time!

They were separate issues with widely different gravities (like comparing Mothra to a gnat) and I was not comparing them...just an observation...no harm or offense meant.

Ray, I'm extremely glad your daughter did not decide to go to that movie premiere.  Not that we should live in fear, I'm just happy for you, and trying to draw a positive from the tragedy is that we can all still hug our loved ones...it's sad so many out there in CO can't.

Got it... pictures would be bad. So very true.

Torture, would be perfect. Too bad we can't torture people in the US. Hum.

Maybe we should let him go rot in one of those prisons overseas... like you see in "Locked up Abroad". We really do treat some of our prisoners too good.

Sorry, dude - it's a gut reaction.  Allowing him to continue receiving food, a cot, and such, shouldn't continue for all the pain, emotional scars, and such that he inflicted on the victims, family and friends.  My opinion.
