Look, to the OP, AERO HELMETS DO WORK. Buy one of saving a few seconds or possibly more is important to you.

Ok YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME!! Thank you so much for your great advice, your wind tunnel pictures (those rocked), the aero helmet studies and more!! WOW!! A wealth of information right here on BT!!!

I have purchased the aero helmet but will probably go for the shorter "tailed" helmet since I do spend some time out of the aero bars. I am also now the proud owner of Zipp 404 wheels for my small frame bike and they should be arriving here soon. Got those on Ebay for under 700.00 (which I thought was a steal).

I rode 85 miles of the Ironman Florida Bike course this weekend. Half of it with an aero helmet, half of it without. I have to say I FELT a difference and saw a small increase in speed. I don't know if I am just kidding myself but if you see a big girl on a little bike with great wheels and a funky helmet..well..I guess you guys will know its me just trying to make that cut off and get to the line before I turn into a pumpkin at midnight...

Ohh..and If you can arrange from this girl to get some free gear courtesy of my 200lb weight loss...Ill be MORE THAN HAPPY to send you my address

Thanks again folks!! You're the best!!!!

Congrats!  Go fast and stay aero, you will see the most advantage when you hold your position.

Congrats on all you have accomplished!

Zipp 404s...sweet deal...you ride 650's? More good deals on them it seems on ebay.

Super that your rode the course and are gaining confidence.

I look forward to meeting you as my husband and I are coming down to cheer, volunteer and sign up for '09.

I would say AERO wheels in general. Zipp are not compulsory even if today they make you feel like a silly guy if you do not have Zipp on your tri bike Undecided

And most guys in the Tour TT had aero helmets, at least what I saw of it.

My point was that many have had the tail modified from the commercially available versions.

I read somewhere maybe on ST that a few teams in the TdF did tests where having their "tails" up was more aero than having it on their back.

The fact of the matter is you look faster so that must count for something right?Laughing

Either way hell yes buy some speed, why wouldn't you want to?

I agree buy all the gear you want/need. However, I would suggest taking a look at your form on the bike. Many times I see people riding in an aero position but with their knees way out. Try to keep your knees tucked in as far as possible...even if you have to over compensate (knees almost touching the top tube) until it becomes natural. Good luck.
