Yep, her fault indeed.  Her lack of common sense caused this accident to happen.  I understand the guys reaction though, I had this happen to me a couple times and nearly blew my top but instead, paused and explained the rules.  After I was done, I asked the lifeguards to jump down from their post and try to prevent collisions like this from happening.  Collisions like this never happened since. =)

Well I'm from the south so FWIW if someone jumped into my lane and we collided, the first thing I would ask is "Are you ok?" She is definitely at fault here, but she didn't mean too and probably learned her lesson. Instead, the situation escalated. Some people need to work on anger management... Everyone is so quick to jump to conclusions nowadays.

I'm from the South as well but I think this is more of a "decent human being" reaction. Someone is hurt, you check on them, you don't snap at them - screw who was "right". Yes, her complaining to other people within earshot of him was totally passive aggressive, but he was a jerk. Seemed to care more about being right and not screwing up his workout than checking on someone in pain (and I am being charitable by saying "seemed to").

Thank you for this.  As someone who has yet to learn how to swim properly, this is something that was keeping me away from the pool--I want to know what the heck I'm supposed to do before getting near lap lanes.

Yes because it was a very forceful push off with an extended glide.  However, since it was instrumental in reinforcing good form, it was worth the goosegg on the head.

If you're going to do flip turns, you need to wear a helmet.  Safety first (plus, saves time in T1).

I do a ton of butterfly work with a 6 foot arm span, everyone stays aways from me.  No one even wants to share my lane as it is like doing open water swim in the ocean.

But doing back stroke, I have had many collisions with people and even the wall.

It was definitely her fault, but I must say, after a flip turn his arms should have been out in front of his head.  Might have prevented a head-to-head collision.

Definitely her fault. I've noticed terribly poor pool etiquette myself. This may not have been the first time this guy encountered something like this and maybe he had just had enough. Not to mention you said that she jumped on his feet and then never announced her presence?  Maybe the could've been less angry about it, but she was definitely in the wrong.

Something similar happened to me a few hours ago.  I was in a lane by myself and didn't see anyone standing on the pool deck at the turns.  I was basically half way down the length of the pool when suddenly I was bumped into pretty hard.  Turns out a guy came out of the men's locker room and jumped into my lane, thinking we were going to share and proceeded to head down the lane without letting me know.  I was frankly a little upset about it and asked him why he didn't let me know.  He just shrugged.  Told him I was fine sharing the lane but in the future please let someone know you're going to do it.  At that time I was doing 50 yard intervals, so he couldn't have been hanging out by the edge of the pool for very long at all or I would have seen him.
