This has only been going on for 100 years... I fail to see why I am still responsible for you living on the beach.

I live in Colorado... you know why... besides the awesome Rocky Mountains... there are no floods, no earthquakes, no tornadoes, and no hurricanes. If you CHOOSE to live in a place with all its beauty and rewards and KNOW you will have to rebuild every 5-10-15 years... then have fun with that. I choose not to... when will people start paying for my home.

My all time favorite argument about living near a coast line.

Good luck getting oil or exporting and importing anything.  And I guess the Navy is just freaking stupid for putting all their bases near the coast line?

According to NOAA (bold my clarification)

The narrow fringe (of coastline) comprising 17 percent of the contiguous U.S. land area is home to more than half of the nation's population

And as I recall CO had some pretty bad wildfires recently.  Not a big issue on the coastline.

Government Flood Insurance tops out at $250k.  With most of these cases the Homeowner insurance won't cover these events because its caused by flood.  So, with most of these houses well over $250k these folks are SOL.

I agree why should I have to pay for your choice to live there and not to carry enough insurance.

I wonder if this is the original bill that had the earmarks for Amtrak, Forest Service and few other tag alongs that had nothing to do with Sandy.  But this gets no coverage.

No floods, earthquakes, tornados, etc., but those forest fires you guys had this past summer were pretty scary.

mrbbrad - 2013-01-29 2:01 PM The more I think about this, the more I wonder; is it really the job of the Federal government to help me rebuild my house if it gets destroyed in a hurricane? A cheap or even free loan sure, or expedited funds to rebuild infrastructure that is Federal responsibility anyway, but the more I hear about how "Washington" has turned it's back on the folks whose homes were destroyed and are still living in tents the more I wonder how much the "Government" should really be doing.

Yep, worst one EVER... not worst one since 5-10-15 years ago.... and I also do not live on the urban/wild land interface... want to take a wild guess why not.

Give it a rest people... I'm not talking about nobody living on the coast line.... I am talking about simple risk managment... economics 101. The U.S. has so many natural disasters every year, make a budget. I am not talking about ADDING money to the budget... this is money we already spend, it's just not budgeted. Obviously, we need to repair damage to infrastucture. And as a whole, home owners should be able to get insurance and pay into the repair pool.

But in my life I have also witnessed the Mississippi flood 5 times... and every time it is the worst since the last time it flooded 5-10 years ago... and we have to hear how this is the 3 time a guys house flooded on the other side of a levee and of course he is going to rebuild. Then we get all the cool photos of houses built right on the beach... not coastal U.S., ON the beach... and of course they will rebulid, just so I can pay for rebuilding it in another 5 years... it's ridiculous, and it's a CHOICE, and I do not see why the tax payer should pay for luxury homes built in irresponssible places just so you can have a beach for a front yard.

Or maybe the people that have enough wealth to have a beach house should pay a higher percentage in taxes to cover the costs. But we can't tax the job creators.

As I mentioned before.  It doesn't matter if it's right or wrong to help when we can't afford it.

Personally I do agree that a good place for the Federal government is to help out with disasters wherever they occur, but the way they "help out" is to pass a pork filled POS bill that probably wastes 2/3 of the money.  We need to have some kind of insurance pool of $ that's just budgeted every year that city/state/individuals can make claims to with real quotes and expenses.  Versus just throwing tens of billions of dollars at local politicians to waste.

The current relief bill is nothing more than an excuse to spend more money.  I read an article about some of the pork in it a week or two ago and there was something like $150M going to Alaska fisheries, and $ for Guantanamo Bay etc...  It's a big joke and we're the punch line.

Exactly, I don't have a problem with aid for a storm ravaged area. But it would be nice to just fix the damage and not spend billions on pork and pet projects. Also it would be nice to see some cuts in discretionary spending to pay for the outlay.

Just like a personal budget, if my car breaks down tomorrow I will have to forego some discretionary spending to pay for the repairs. But if I could get a old of my own money printing machine I would have it made!

that's what I was getting out... this is a budgetable expense the country needs to pay... not a chance to soap box and take hostage so you can have another opportunity to load on billions in pork and get face time on TV.
