25![]() | Subject: RE: Am I right or wrong asking LBS to match price? The online store is able to offer a cheaper price because of the overhead difference; your local store is hardly price gouging. Try asking for an extension to lifetime tune-ups from whatever they are offering. |

They may take offense, but the reality is that they know they are competing with online sales. I would think they would appreciate the opportunity to sell to you. |

Expert 834![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Medina, MN | Subject: RE: Am I right or wrong asking LBS to match price?I'd always prefer to support my LBS, but at the same time $400 is a bit more than I'd feel is necessary. I vote for being willing to pay more at the LBS, but asking them to work with you on price a bit to make the difference a bit less. I would think that if you tell them that you're willing to pay a bit more to support them, they're not going to be hostile towards you, since they know you're essentially giving them money that you don't have to spend. Longer term, it makes you wonder if they're all going to have to start charging more for service to cover reduced profitability on the new bike sales.... -Matt Edited by MLJ 2008-09-11 1:57 PM |

Subject: RE: Am I right or wrong asking LBS to match price?I bought a Cervelo and they list their price on their website... so the price is the price, so when my local bike shop ordered it, there wasn't a question of what the price was ...and I still get free tune-ups! But I'm going to lean heavily toward buying it from your LBS. Phrase the question like this: "How much better can you do on price?" Don't ask them "If they can do better" ... just ask "How much..." If they come down around 100 bucks, pull the trigger. As mentioned, we're all going to be Shittt outta Luck when the LBS start closing up and we all buy our stuff from online sites from out of state. Never again will you be able to buy a "last minute item" or talk to someone face to face and get local service. That reality would suck. Edited by Dream Chaser 2008-09-11 3:11 PM |

I went today and spoke with the LBS and they agreed to match the price of the online store and then I paid tax on that. I realize tax has nothing to do with the bike store, so I was more than willing to buy from them if they could match the pre-tax price, which they did. I now have a pair or running shoes, I joined a gym with a 25yd pool 2 weeks ago, and as of this afternoon at about 3:30pm est I have a brand new Kuota K Factor SL. I think I am ready to start training for my first tri. Let the fun begin. |

Member 115![]() Petaluma, CA | Subject: RE: Am I right or wrong asking LBS to match price?I recently bought an '09 Orbea Orca from a LBS. I could have gone cheaper, but opted not to. About a week after I brought my bike home, my decision was reinforced. I took a nasty spill and did a bit of damage. I broke my Ritchie Evo Carbon SL bars ($350) and bent one of my custom wheels. I called the LBS and was told to bring it in and that they would drop everything and fix my bike right away. They gave me new bars at %25 off. They also spent about an hour getting my wheel straight and another 30 minutes tuning. The refused to take a dime for labor. I also had a pretty tricky derailleur issue that I would never have been able to resolve on my own. Had I gone the less expensive route, I would have had to pay my LBS for a tune, a wheel and full price for bars. Ultimately, i think the LBS route is less expensive. Extreme Veteran 426![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Dearborn, Michigan, USA. | Subject: RE: Am I right or wrong asking LBS to match price?I saw this thread a few days ago and wanted to respond but got busy with other projects. I'm glad it popped up again. I founded an LBS that has evolved into both an LBS and a substantial internet/mail order triathlon retailer. To me, I would not be offended at all if you asked to match a price. Provided the person is courteous and respectful in their inquiry- as I know you are- it is simply a matter of business. Now, protecting the poor little old LBS is all well and good, and a much appreciated sentiment. The thing is, it isn't your responsibility as a consumer to insure the LBS is a sustainable business model. As it stands I don't think the traditional brick and mortar, corner store, mom n pop LBS is a viable entity anymore. They have to have an internet/mail order component to survive and prosper and grow. I'm not receptive to these "save the poor little bike shop!" threads. I don't want to be a little bike shop. I want to worry about the tax burden of grossing $20 Million per year exclusively over the web, a very achievable goal for an internet retailer. It isn't up to you (the consumer) to see that I get there. I run the shop- it's up to me. As a consumer your job is to get the best buying experience you can. Price is a component of that, it isn't the only component, but it is part of it. I recently wrote some articles on this topic. You may find them interesting: http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/store/howmuch.shtml http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/store/mailorder.shtml |

Expert 1394![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wilmington, NC | Subject: RE: Am I right or wrong asking LBS to match price?Tom Thanks for the reply. You actually replied to my queries on slowtwitch as to what bike to go for between the P2 SL and the Kuota etc etc. I appreciate a response that comes from one of the most respected bike dealers in Triathlon. My LBS happens to be one of the most respected stores in the Southeast and they obv think like you, because they matched the price, actually bettered it by 13 bucks when all was said and done. I will definately support them in the future not because it is my LBS but because of what they have to offer in as far as service and expertise. |

Master 1795![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Boynton Beach, FL | Subject: RE: Am I right or wrong asking LBS to match price?brian - 2008-09-10 5:05 PM That said, when something goes wrong with your bike or you need a last minute adjustment or something prior to a race, the on-line retailer will not be there for you ... hopefully your LBS will be Exact reason I go through LBS for most my gear. They will change tires, tune up, install cages, bike computers etc free with a smile. Yes, I likely pay a few bucks more for the material, but the advice, maintainance and all the coaching I get from the owner is priceless. They also usually throw in the extras when you buy larger purchase. Example, new wheels = free cassett or heavily discounted, as well as wheel bags if not included etc. I know when I bought my P2SL all the other items, helmet, shoes, pedals etc were discounted 20%. As mentioned previously, they generally do not have a lot of play with bike prices, but can make up in higher margin products. That plus relationship in being just a phone call away is worth it to me... 2 cents.... |
