Extreme Veteran 502 Tucson | Subject: RE: Overreactions BrianRunsPhilly - 2013-04-17 9:17 AM joestop74 - 2013-04-16 12:09to try and force you to change your way of life? PM If that's all to the story, then definite overreaction. Our country is excellent at taking extreme and unnecessary measures when its too late. However, there may be more to the story.... so we'll have to see. You mean like posting hundreds of National Guard troops all over Boston the day after the attack? It feels good, I guess, to some. As I posted earlier, sitting in the Starbucks at the Westin drinking coffee with armed troops in camouflage and full gear on patrol was surreal and somewhat sad. The reality is that there was an extremely comprehensive plan in place for security prior to the attack. But if we want even a remotely free society we have to balance personal liberties with personal security. Personally, I vote for liberty. Aren't the goals of terrorism fear and forcing you to change your way of life? x 1,000 |

Left Brain - 2013-04-17 8:12 AM After all of the completely wrong information given out by so called "news" outlets this week, I find myself basically unable to comment on the bombing, or this kind of thing, because who knows what the real story is? I saw so much wrong information repeated on this board, and others, over the last few days. Is there going to be a push for background checks and waiting periods to buy pressure cookers? What about a garage sale loophole? Possibly just ban them? Glad I got it right, tks for cutting me in. |

Elite 4564 Boise | Subject: RE: Overreactions Kido - 2013-04-17 10:58 AM Basically, I just check in about every 8 hours and see what's new. If you try to watch the news outlets waiting for something to break, it just won't happen OR they makes something up/speculate just to keep you hooked. Case in point, everyone was reporting it was an 8yr old girl was killed, but ends up it was a boy 24 hours later. Maybe it's not that big a deal BUT, you could report it's a 8-yr old child and it get's the point across. But the unchecked fact reporting bugs me. Then they have to interview anyone they can get their hands on. Some guy blocks away was interviewed and said there was THREE explosions. Wrong. Maybe he hear echos, so not his fault, but why are they interviewing someone that was 1/2 away? Some news source actually interviewed someone from the Atlanta bombings that wasn't even in Boston. I guess to get some kind of comparison/insight?
Or like reporting a suspect is in custody when no one has been arrested. |

Austin, Texas or Jupiter, Florida | Subject: RE: Overreactions Can I post an overreaction? Why don't we start having drones fly over big events for a few hours before, during, and after major events and record everyone who goes in and out? We have the drones and the technology to then apply facial recognition to anyone. Overreaction complete... |

Veteran 549 | Subject: RE: Overreactions I work at home and witnessed the biggest piece of crap journalism I have seen in many years. FOX and CNN looked like they were in a race to see who could report first that a suspect had been apprehended. You would have had to have seen it to believe it. In 30 minutes they literally went from saying a person of interes had been spotted on a video to saying he had been arrested and was being taken to a Federal Courthouse. I switched back and forth between the 2 stations but noticed MSNBC was saying the opposite. It hit me that things were moving WAY too fast. Have never watched FOX or CNN very much but definitely will never watch again unless they change their programming. |

Veteran 549 | Subject: RE: Overreactions It is very hard to respect these news agencies when they act like school yard kids trying to "one up" each other. It was so bad that people on each channel should lose their jobs, which I doubt will happen. |

Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Overreactions I can't stand how things are covered as well (if you can't get that from my other posts). I agree with most of the negative comments about the media coverage of things like this. BUT, in my effort to try and always understand the other point of view on any argument: They are also in a bit of a pinch. In this current society, we are so connected in the media with our phones and the interwebz AND have shorter and shorter attention spans and less patience than ever. Everything has to be NOW NOW NOW. Even our news. If they did the right thing and reported NOTHING because they don't know anything yet? People would be clambering for any kind of information and move to the next person that WILL tell them something. If people could just wait, and realize this takes time instead of wanting answers NOW... The investigation will tell us when it's ready to tell us. Asking them for answers (or having the media do it for us) constantly does no good either. It's kind of like a bunch of kids saying "are we there yet? Are we there yet?" on a road trip. Soon the parents are just saying things like "yeah, soon" or "just a couple more minutes" to feed the frenzy. Again, that's why I check in every 6-8 hours. We will get there when we get there and I will know it when it happens. No need to ask "are we there yet?" by watching countless hours of coverage and speculation and get fed bits of unconfirmed information just to placate me. |

489 | Subject: RE: Overreactions There's also big competition between the news channels - unfortunately the channel reporting thigns like 'do you know what, we don't know anything, no-one's telling us everything and it would be wrong to speculate but here's a picture of some rabbits' will lose out every time to the dramatic, frenzy driven, rumour mill peddling lunatics who will literally say anything to stop you turning the channel over. Ironic that they call it 24 hour news. It's usually about 30 minutes of news and 23.5 hours of drama, speculation and opinion. |

If we gave everyone a pressure cooker that was watching and running the race, we would have stopped it! |
