Ok, give us your pick.

Anyone that has the guts to wear seaweed on national TV deserves the Heisman in my book!

jacasa - 2012-12-09 11:38 AMWhat drives me nuts is when I hear voters like Sam Bradford and their criteria for why they voted as they did. There is rarely any logic involved. Manziel beat the best team in the country on their home field. A team that many hate for their greatness and their fans arrogance. That IMO is why Manziel won. He went 1-2 against any semblance of competition. He ranked 16th is passer rating, 16th in yards, 16th in completions and 25th in TD's this year in D1. Not that impressive in my book.
If manziel went 1-2 against any semlance of competition (I disagree) than notre dame played no one considering those 3 teams were better than anyone the irish played all year.

That's not seaweed. It's called a Ti Leaf Lei. Only the Kahuna were allowed to wear them in ancient Hawaii.

I'm not sure how staged that was. I mean the Kukui nut lei is way more common among men. When I met Gov Abercrombie at his birthday party, he was wearing Kukui, not Ti. Same with Senator Daniel Inouye. There was also a guy who is famed to have 100% Hawaiian blood, no Ha'ole blood. He wore Kukui.

I know the Ironman winner gets a Ti leaf lei and I think that is a closer tie to the Big Island than Oahu where Mantai is from. There are so many sacred sights on the Big Island and that is where Kamehameha was from. I think the Ha'ole liked Oahu because of Pearl Harbor.

I think it would've been great to have Mantai win. Hawaiians could use a hero like him. Good academics, leader, etc. they haven't had much to cheer for lately...except that whole president thing...

I will say for ND that the week before the season, people picked them to win 6 games including Mike and Mike...

They are the first team to go from unranked (including no honorable mention votes) to the BCS Championship. They didn't do so like Auburn, by finding an amazing Juco player for a year, they did so by gelling together and playing like a team. The guy who most helped them gel was definitely Te'o.

If they win the NC, it's largely because of Te'o and if they don't, it's still an incredible run for a team that had been given up for dead because they still make their players go to class and pass tests to play.

Manziel now has to play with that trophy on his back for the next 2 years and then he'll likely not do much in the pros because he's shorter than Lee Corso. I don't know how A&Ms defense holds up over that same period, but they have been really good this year too.

The kid from Kerrville is exciting and I enjoy watching him. But I agree that there were probably more deserving players in college football who don't get any attention.

Not to mention they are the first team to finish 1st in the BCS and 1st in the Academic standings as well.

A&M played 6 bowl teams this year and went up against the #1, #6, #17, #23 and #24 ranked team. ND played 9 bowl teams while playing the #8, #10, #17, #17 ranked team in the country. I would call that fairly even. Difference is ND beat them all.

Your original comment did not refer to the Aggies schedule as a whole. You stated that Manziel went 1-2 against competitive football teams.

#2 Alabama 12-1 SEC Champion W

#3 Florida 11-1 L

#4 LSU 10 -2 L

#6 Stanford, #11 Oklahoma, #18 Michigan and unranked USC are obviously the best teams Notre  Dame beat this year. My question is do you think that any of these teams are better than the competition Manziel went 1-2 against? You don't have to answer because Bowl Season will more then answer our question. Alabama vs. Notre Dame and A&M vs Oklahoma will be very telling of what teams are good as product of their scheduling.

GomesBolt - 2012-12-09 8:00 AM If Bama wins the NC, he deserves it because he did make several plays to hand them their only loss.

If ND wins, then Te'o deserved it because he's the leader of the team.

Colin Klein doesn't deserve it because he laid an egg on National TV against Baylor. Never mind that he dominated every other game. They were looking to him to dominate or lose the trophy.

Either Bama validates Johnny Football or it should've gone to Te'o.

So Klein did exactly what Manziel did (lay an egg on national tv vs LSU) but he doesn't deserve it because his team is higher ranked and he has relatively similar stats (3400 yds 37 TD 7 int vs 4400 yds 43 td's 8 int)?

Klein has a lot less talent around him. Manziel has two possible top 10 picks in the draft on his team.

The Heisman has been a joke for awhile IMO. I don't really think it's a huge travesty that Manziel won, but I would've picked Klein. Even Geno Smith had similar numbers (4100 yds 42 TD 6 int) and he laid 2 eggs (same as Manziel). I think Manziel won it this year purely because A&M just moved to the SEC.

If you want the most impressive stats this year, it's got to be Jordan Lynch (4700 yds 43 TD's 5 INT's, led NIU to a BCS bowl, something Klein and him share that Manziel doesn't)

While I have no doubt that he was the most valuable player for his team, to compare stats compiled against MAC defenses vs stats compiled against Big 12 or SEC competition is a stretch to say the least. Lynch only had 54 yards passing in his one game against BCS competition.

Of the 3 finalists, I would have given it to Klein. I also would not have complained if USC's Lee was in the running. From a pure talent standpoint, I think he was the most impressive player in the country.

Without a doubt the biggest snub of the awards season was Phillip Thomas not getting the Jim Thorpe award. He put up twice the stats of any other defensive back, but he doesn't play in the SEC, which is apparently now a requirement for the award.

Just aiming for a little consistency...

jacasa - 2012-12-08 9:21 PM First of all, it is extremely difficult to say who the "best" player is in college football. What drives me CRAZY is some of the reasons these so called experts give as to why they voted for Manziel. It doesn't matter that this was A&M's first year in the SEC. It doesn't matter that he beat a very good (not great) Alabama team @ Alabama on national TV. It doesn't matter that he was given the nickname of Johnny Football. It doesn't matter that he is a freshman. What does matter is he went 1-2 against any competition; He had 172 yards passing against Florida and lost. He had a passing % of 52% of against LSU with 3 interceptions and lost. Other than Alabama, who was his signature win? Arkansas? Mississippi State?

To be honest, I've been disappointed in the Heisman for a very long time.  Ever since Troy Davis was denied two years in a row, but more importantly the second year when he lost to Danny Wuerffel in '96.  All because he was on one of the worst teams that had swiss cheese for an offensive line.  I am NOT an ISU fan, but that man got ripped off.

I'm not saying that Te'o got ripped off.  Heck, he was up against being a pure defensive player AND someone who put up some crazy yardage.  And the Southern bias probably didn't help.

Cool

82 v 59 tackles

8 v 4 interceptions

3 v 0 touchdowns

8 v 3 forced fumbles

You could be playing in the Big East and those numbers should still win you the award.

In cases where the statistics are even remotely similar, I think you have to give it to the player that has played the better competition. This isn't one of those cases.

I do not think they should award the Heisman until after the Bowl games. I can't  remember his name (Troy Smith I think), but I think it was the OSU QB that won and then had a horrible bowl game a few years ago!

Honestly, none of these players really excited me enough to care about watching the Heisman presentation.

I believe Troy Smith had 6 yds of offense in that game. Went on to an illustrious NFL career as well.

He was 4 of 14, passing for 35yds, no TD's and an interception against the UF Gators.  The classic moment from the game was when the OSU band did the sinking of the Titanic during their halftime show...

He also had -29 yds rushing (sacks count as rushing yds in college)
