Has anyone had any experience with debt negotiation companies? I am considering using Debt RElief America but don't know if this is a good idea. My situation is my wife and I earn around $100K (before taxes) rent a house ($1050) and are making 2 car payments ($670 monthly) plus have approx $38K (6K to family) of debt plus student loans. At the end of the month we have very little left and have a child and another on the way. I just don't see things getting any better and will not file bankcruptcy. I had use CCC years ago and it worked to pay off the debt but after owning my last money pit of a house I am back were I started. Just looking to see if others have experience with the debt negotiators? It sounds like my credit will suffer since you don't make payments to the creditors until the entire balance is paid off. Thanks for the help. Umm am I missing something here? 100,000 / 12 = $8333 Income $8333 – Tax $1500- Rent $1050- Cars $670- Student loans $1000- Daycare $600- Food $800- Utilities $600- Gas $250- New Tri bike $1000 Money left: $863.33 I totally feel your situation but not to blow this situation up, however, $100,000 is an upper middle class income in America. Have you written down every penny that comes in and out to see where it is going? My above example is BS but it still shows where the money is going. Ryan |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Get the Dave Ramsay book at the library. Even if you don't use his plan to a tee he explains why bankrupcy and debt negotiators should be your last option. |

You guys are forgetting to add in his debt other than student loans - that can easily add up to more than $1,000 a month. |

You guys are forgetting to add in his debt other than student loans - that can easily add up to more than $1,000 a month. Change the "New Tri Bike" category to "other debt" and problem solved. One thing that's easy to overlook would be insurance, be it auto, health, life, etc. Those things cost money too and depending on driving records/car makes & models, and the health of the individuals they can cost quite a bit of money. Ok, Add $500/month for insurance .... Thats should be plenty.... leaves $300/month for "wham" money |

Thats should be plenty.... leaves $300/month for "wham" money Plenty... according to whom? We're talking about a family of 3 [4] here, so health insurance, if not provided or subsidized by the employer can be pretty expensive. I know for myself and my wife it would be easily over $400 without any kiddos. And we're healthy! Then we have to figure out how much it is to insure two vehicles [I'm assuming each less than 2 years old] without knowing the driving records of the individuals. We're going to assume $100 per month for auto insurance? Doesn't sound very reasonable to me. I'd say $300 would be fair, if not a little bit low. All of a sudden "tight" starts to make sense. It's easy for us to minimize the situation because we're not in it, but I don't think that's very helpful. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was going to mention Dave Ramsey in my original reply but knew that Dave's advice would be MUCH harsher than anything we have suggested. He'd say, get rid of the cars, bike to work, NO eating out, NO cable TV, no internet, eat baloney for lunch every day and start paying off the debt. And by big ticket items I meant things like cable, phone etc.. Although you are right, the small items can add up as well. |

Insurance is a BIG expense. |

![]() | ![]() Okay, just got back from lunch and read the replies. Unfortunetely these discussion are difficult online. Trust me the big problem I do live above means and plan on talking to the wife about it. We recently cancelled our gym membership and tanning since we really don't need that. We have a storage unit for $35 a month and that is going away too. Right now we have all hte old baby items in it and since baby 2 is on the way no longer need. We need cable of some sort but I am going try and find a way to reduce same with cell. I know i can make it work I am just stressing. Between find out about the new addition and not getting a bons I was expecting I am a little stressed out. |

![]() | ![]() the bear - 2008-01-23 1:21 PM You are absolutely correct.I'm going to sound a little harsh here, but something's not making sense. We're in the same salary range, we have a similar house note and car note, maybe not as much other debt, but we're putting three kids through private school and still doing just fine. Sounds like you guys need to cut back on the lifestyle. |

![]() | ![]() kanders - 2008-01-23 1:11 PM I have sat down and have my bills in excel and can tell y ou what I spend it on. The problem is getting rid of stuff.Call some of these folks you have contractual obligations to. I'm guessing this is the cable company, cell phone company? They'll be better served to let you reduce to a cheaper plan than to start missing payments. Be honest, tell them you're crunched, and see what it does. You should not be eating out at all. I grocery shop for 5 and am typically in the $450-500/month range. It makes a really big difference when you eat out. If you only pay $600/month for daycare, is your wife not working FT? Can she increase hours and contribute a little more to the pot? One more thing. I'm sensing from the way you're talking that you haven't ever taken a really hard look at what comes in and what goes out - you're just paying it as it goes, and always feeling behind. Sit down and add up all your expenditures and all your income. Look at what you think you spend. Then for one month, take every receipt that you get and stack it up in a corner, and you'll be able to see what you really spend, and where. Once you have that knowledge, you'll be able to make changes. Until you know it, there's always going to be some reason that you can't do this, that, or the other.

She does work full time and make pretty good money. |

The problem is getting rid of stuff. Dave Ramsey would probably say something like "Have a garage sale, get on eBay and sell so much stuff that that new baby won't want to come out because he'll think he's next!" The car deal is tricky, especially with a lease. Call the company you have it leased with and get the Early Buyout amount. Then look on KBB and see what you could reasonably get for it from a private sale. Go to your local bank or CU and drop those numbers on their desk and see if they will give you an unsecured loan for the difference so that you can pay the thing [van] off once it's sold. I'd rather have a $5,000 debt than a $25,000 debt - just numbers I pulled out of nowhere as an example. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I could buy a new bike every month on what I spend in daycare expenses alone. You're DC costs will go up when number two arrives. anyway, FWIW, I have spent the last month getting my families finances organized. Going over all the little details and re-arranging just about every financial obligation. The bottom line is that you need to have a feel for what is coming in vs what is going out. A lot of times the balance is off. What you need to do is restore that balance, and you will get into a better situation fairly quickly. One thing I just did.. cancel long distance on the land line. That saves over 30 dollars per month. Now the rule is call LD on cell phone only, and only when that is free.. e.g. in network, and nights / weekends. These days, even upper middle class income families are feeling the squeeze. I feel nickle and dimed to the point of extreme frustration. That's basically why we are headed into a recession. Anyway, it's my turn to fight back, and it should be yours as well. |

![]() | ![]() atl_runner - 2008-01-23 3:29 PM DC will go up but only $400 a month. I only pay $20 a day and don't pay the days I don't go (I got a sweet deal) but my money I pay to my parents will cover that as I should not owe them when finished. I have been making calls this afternnoon to get rid of somethings. Below is my budget and it looks somewhat better because i got rid of the "fun money" for lunchesl, etc. I will only spend that if I have money left and then only little. Income $6500 (after tax) Rent $1050 Cars $677 - will drop in july 08 Insurance $177 Day Care $660 Phone/cable $100 On contract for 1 yr Cellular $100 on contract for around 1 yr Water/garbage $65 security system $35 - On contract for 2.5 yrs CC & Student Loans $767 Loan to Parents $500 will go away in <1yr but will be replaced by daycare and formula Gas for cars $250 Groceries $800 Electric $350 average price but our house is not very energy efficient. We bough space heaters to save on this. Remaining $800 I also spend about $20 on blockbuster online that for now I am keeping because we do watch alot of movies but that might go away. I am going to try and save on my cell phone bills also (personally I would get rid of them but for safety I want my wife to have one). Like I said I probably paniced after not getting a raise and finding out about the baby. |
