Hello....I'm from Iowa too....however not close to either of you. I'm in LeMars, IA which is NW Iowa 1/2 hour north of Sioux City.

I started doing Tri's last year and I'm hooked.

I'm hoping to do the Hyvee Tri.

What are you strength sports..swim, running, bike? Maybe we can help each other out.

hey, i'm looking to the the hy-vee tri too! my strongest points are definitely bike, and swim! I swam in HS and have loved it all my life, it's my element. Running on the other hand...BAD! No other word for it!

Hey red89,

I am in Altoona. I have never done a triathlon before. I did run in the Des Moines Marathon last October. Triathlons seem to be a good next step for me since I wanted a different challenge. I started to go out last year and watch the Hy-Vee tri but something came up and I did not get the chance. I don't know if I will try that one or not. There are some other tris around that I think I will get my feet wet, so to speak, before trying a "bigger" race.

Maybe we can train together sometime. I am not very fast so if you want someone to challenge you I might not be the best choice.

I'm from Altoona too. I signed up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team In Training program last week and start training for the Hy-Vee Triathlon on Feb. 4th. Pretty nervous about the swim portion but I am confident that it will all come together in the next 20 weeks.

 I'll be able to meet Jdwright56 @Siouxperman! You should consider LeMars it's in September and the prizes are good! I got an entire box of steaks last year plus a few other prizes.

That reminds me of how I used to call Cedar Rapids, the city of 5 smells.

One summer I lived in Iowa City and worked in CR, just off Blairs Ferry Road.  I would take the Interstate (380 I think?) and as you pass through southern CR all the way up to the north, you pass at least 5 distinct difference smell "zones."

 

I grew up in Dubuque, but now live just North of NYC.  I don't miss much about Iowa, except the skyline that seemed to go on forever, and cool summer nights, and no traffic.

But I don't miss the whole "turn left slight before you turn right" thing.

Looks like there are 30 BT'ers scheduled for Hy-Vee so far.  That is a good turnout.

I've never heard of Black Squirrel in Council Bluffs.  What can you tell me about that one?

The black squirrel is just short of a oly distance. 1000 swim 21 bike and 6.2 run. It is held at lake manawa in council bluffs. sponsored by the YMCA.

2007 was the second year of the race. It was a pretty good race. very flat course, I believe have a higher vertical jump then the elevation change of this race. the website for the race is:

That city of the five smells crack kills me! I'm in Le Claire, work in the QCA. and spend some time up and down eastern Iowa. Hoping to do the Quad City tri, Pig Man, Point to Point swim, cross roads, and lake geode

Between Cedar Rapids & Clinton I think Iowa has some of the worst smelling towns I've been through in a long time. I am planning on doing at least the QC tri, if not both that one and the one in DeWitt.

I'm training by myself. I don't really have the schedule that I can train the same time consistantly. This is a good way to meet other triathletes and break up the monotony along with some motivation.
