rottieguy - 2008-10-28 11:28 PM I'm on a brake from most training right now, but may be available Sunday after 8 am for something, gotta work Saturday.

How about some bi-athlon training, as soon as the IL rifle range clears out from the Deer Hunter Sight In? Only two weeks to go. I've never shot at IL before.

I just got the iron sights in the mail, and I've picked out a Leupold, but haven't ordered it yet.

You'll have to excuse my MI/hunting ignorance- I admit, guns make me nervous- but will there be hunters with guns at the poto? We went camping there sometime last year around this time and were awakened every morning by rifle shots by our tents. It's my understanding that they use the same trails as hikers/runners/mtb and can just shoot freely there. Do we have to wear orange, or something? I'd prefer not to get shot

First, I have no idea what the hunting arrangement is at the poto and the surrounding areas.

Second, Michigan's Firearm season for deer does not start until Nov 15th.  I'd stay clear of the public land woods that day (Its a Saturday).  However, bird and small game season is open right now.  Many hunters are also busy sighting in their firearms for deer season.  The types of rifles that are used are VERY loud, and can sound like they are very close, but could easily be a half mile away.  Without direct knowledge of the hunting regulations around the poto, I can't really comment on safety in the area.  Ask someone at a ranger booth.  They always know the scoop.

Third, guns are tools.  You shouldn't be afraid of them.  Its the person using them, that I question.  Jamie is not comfortable with guns either.  I've always left an open invitation to teacher her about them myself, or find an instructor that she would be comfortable with.  She still hasn't taken me up on it.  My mom has shown some interest in the past couple months, perhaps Jamie will learn with her.

In lots of ways, its like making a switch from a hybrid bike to a tri bike.  There are some new things you need to learn in order to control it properly, and it has the potential to hurt someone, but when used properly and rules are followed, it can be a useful tool for creating enjoyment and healthy living.

I should've qualified my statement- I'm not exactly afraid of using a gun myself, it is others with guns in my vicinity that are aiming to shoot things that are moving that scares me. I've never lived in an area where they allowed hunting, with guns, in the same area as they encouraged people to hike, bike and run. That's what scares me. We went camping last year in early October, before deer season, and there were rifle shots all around the camping area- within a few miles. If you went out onto the trail, you would encounter hunters using the same trail (Crooked lake trail, I believe) to get around, I suppose trying to shoot birds and small game.

I guess I should ask for those that have used the poto trails into the fall, if there are still a lot of hikers, or does the land just turn over to hunters only? Is it still small game season?

I wonder if they have a ranger station that you could call?

I know that some areas that are mainly bike and hike during the summer, basically shut down to hunting. Not because the rules require it, but rather as a choice of those using it.

Sorry I can't help any more than that.

FYI, Matt, if I do go to the game I'm driving up with Mike O  - if you are interested in having some brews and catching up let me know!

That would be cool, but I won't be around.  I haven't had tickets in a while.

Tell him to get training and do some races next year.

yes, wearing bright colors this time of year is always wise. Those areas are open to hunters.

Anyone got any cute 'hunter-orange' running tops? Or better yet, spandex cycling shorts?

I wouldn't hesitate to use Poto or ILRA til Nov 15.  Some bright colors may work well, just stay away from brown and white

I'll stay away from trails open to gun hunting for deer after the opener, since shotgun season last til Nov 30, then Muzzelloading runs from Dec 5 to the 21st in the areas of southern Michigan according to the guide.  Then ole man winter usually has the trails trashed by then.  Maybe we will get lucky this winter.

 Have fun Saturday.

I prefer to bike b/c I haven't been doing too much running but I would however be in for a short run.

We can just strap our own guns to the bikes for retaliation.....I mean self defense

I'll be riding for at least part of the day McClain, and it looks like a few others will be in for a MTB ride on that gnarly but super fun trail. Be prepared for some quad-mashing! Yipee!

I'm now officially going to the game.   Where are you going to be tail-gating at?!  Want to meet up for some beers?  My friends generally set up shop as SOON as the gates open up - and they have quite the spread.  So yeah, I'm going to rockin' the tailgate EARLY!

Nah, no game.  :kickscan:

I don't know B Langdon.  Perhaps I'd recognize him if I saw him.  Mike was a couple years ahead of me.  We didn't pal around, but knew each other through the house.

There's always NEXT week!!   Would you believe that Johnny Spirit still attends games all painted up?  I saw him at the ND game.  One freakin' weird dude!

Have you ever talked to him?  Like seriously, sat down and rapped with the dude?  He is all kinds of messed up.

Perhaps ten years of being a pseudo-mascot has helped him though.

That would be a negative.  I just "observe" him.   I saw him at the ND game biking with a MSU flag flying off the backside...we are um, oblivious to him now.  He's just "there."
