It actually is in part our recruitment that makes others in the religious world not like us very much. There is an underlying non spoken law between other religions to not step on each others toes. As members for them = $$$ in donations. So they don't go and 'recruit' from other congregations. LDS on the other hand believes in spreading the gospel to all man. They don't like $$$ going out of their pockets.
Now this is not all of them, but a lot don't like that.
Oh and they think we're going to hell, but they think that about a lot of people .

I get the sense from some of the pamphlets that I've seen that some Christian sects use Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses as tools in a kind of negative campaign, which amounts to recruitment. |

Hmm....I'd tend to disagree that other sects of Christianity don't believe this. The Bible is pretty clear that this is one of the jobs of Christians - to witness to everyone and spread the Gospel, regardless of money. If that weren't the case, churches wouldn't go to impoverished countries or work with the local underpriviledged (both of which my church does a lot of), because well, they couldn't get donations from them, no could they?... |

Yeah, but there's the whole "book of Mormon" thing that doesn't fly with the rest of Christianity. That's a major point of contention. I don't profess to know a ton about Mormons, but what I do know, I know from talking to actual former Mormons - one who became a Christian and one who's not really anything. No matter where it comes from though, the info is going to be biased in some way, so we can only do so much, I guess. |

Philadelphia, south of New York and north of DC | Subject: RE: Why didn't you tell me??? wurkit_gurl - Well, Catholics and Episcopalians/Anglicans/Presbyterians/Methodists/Baptists/ all believe that Jesus is the Messiah/Son of God/God in human form and is THE way to heaven, which is why they're all generally friendly to each other (though they disagree on smaller issues). With all love and charity toward you, my sister in Christ, I'd say the issues that divide us are pretty big. The main one being the belief that Jesus left us an apostolic, hierarchical church that ministers the seven sacraments, and that Jesus commanded us to give assent to that church and those sacraments, thus ensuring the we enter fully into His mystical body.
Also, just to clarify one point in general, while we believe that salvation is through Jesus, that does not mean that those who do not believe in Jesus can't be saved, even if they die in unbelief. Jesus is the gate keeper of the bridge to heaven, but what happens when an unbeliever dies and is surprised to find themselves at the toll booth is between them and Our Lord. Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: Why didn't you tell me??? Not to get into a big theological debate. But that's why there's more fluidity between the various Protestant sects and even Catholicism - all have the same belief about Jesus and that's what matters to Christians. Yeah, I'm COJ-theologied out too but I agree with Don (we've discussed this in the past). The differences are both larger and smaller, more blatant and more subtle, than this characterization. But I realize you were trying to speak in generalities.

We will have to disagree on most of your points except one: "I don't profess to know a ton about Mormons..." I'll give you that one. But yet, we must be wrong, because someone else said it even though they also probably lacked the knowledge.
I have no issue with people disagree with knowledge on the subject. Everyone can make their own choices.
Back on topic, I've shown that picture to about 10 people today...priceless. |
