Yes, salad counts. Which reminds me of a "cooking for your date" story: My best friend had just started dating this guy and she was ga ga over him. On their 3rd or 4th date, he was going to surprise her and cook for her. He spent a lot of time and effort putting together this delicious Italian meal - salad, bread, wine, and pasta with red sauce and mushrooms. And not just a few, but just smothered in mushrooms.........guess where I am going? The ONE and ONLY food on this earth that my girfriend will NOT eat - and borders on the maniacal about it is mushrooms! She hates them SO much that one year I just HAD to get her a mushroom of the month subscription for a gag gift. Most people when in such a situation, would perhaps be willing to gag down whatever food item the person was nice enough to make them....but she just could not, and had to tell him she wouldn't be eating the sauce. So the moral of the story - cooking for her as a surprise is very sweet - but be SURE you know she will like what you are cooking. He wasn't too upset, they ended up getting married. For eight months. Poor girl. Mushrooms must have been an omen. I, too, am a mushroom hater. Power to the anti-fun-gi people! Great story, though. I like to bait people with it ... just to the point where they say in exasperation ... "They don't really taste like anything" ... just so I can reply "Then WHY OH WHY put them in there?!?" Slimly, squeeky, dirt tasting little bits of concentrated manure ... |

It's not going to be the deal-breaker with me ever, but it's a big-enough deal that I value the fact that Eric can cook. Part of it is about following a recipe, yes, but there's more to it than that. You kinda have to know what's happening with the different ingredients. More like chemistry than anything else. Plus, you should know what flavors complement each other. I don't know if they still do it, but Maxim used to have an article each month giving the basic directions for cooking something that was simple yet spectacular. Eric has a great great great cookbook that gives little dinner menues, and how-tos and every recipe he's tried from that has been wonderful. Cooking Light also has some really good recipes that are not only healthy, but quick and easy to prepare. I think any person (man or woman) who is the dating world should have a couple of items they can do, and do well. It's worth even taking a cooking class at the local rec center, if that's what's needed. Or get one of your platonic friends to teach you a couple of different dishes you can make. Also, here's a hint: if you're planning on cooking a special meal, do a trial run before the special person/people arrives. The first Thanksgiving with Eric's family, poor Eric had to eat everything twice as I cooked each of the various dishes once before T-day, to be sure I knew how it would/should turn out. |

Oh definitely - cooking something new on a date is just asking for a disaster of some sort. |

Yeah, soon as I saw it I had to say something. It's not just about impressing someone, it's also a survival skill - granted, there are a ton of fast/easy frozen things out there, but there is a lot to be said for being able to make whatever you want to eat. Time is the enemy of most people when it comes to cooking. I know a lot of folks don't get as much joy out of cooking as I do - but if you can put some time towards it, it can be really rewarding. |

Beyond those things, though, how much cooking does one need? (and HA! I could live on salads and PBJs as long as I toss in some hamburger periodically... forever. Sounds perfectly normal that you've mastered all of the "Man Meals": Spaghetti, chili, the BBQ and a Crawdad boil - all of those things come wired into the DNA. |

The fact that it was 90 second microwave rice, and pre-cooked frozen chicken strips means that I shouldn't really fall into the category of "I can cook" for tonight at least. |

Elite 3972 Reno | Subject: RE: Reading the dating ideas thread.... Both my husband and I can cook. And we are both married - coincedence? I think not. I have never really understood the "I can't cook" people either. I think, in some instances, it is an eating disorder. They don't want to put effort into the food she will eat because they don't want to enjoy eating. Not saying this is everyone's case, some people just were never encouraged to try it, just don't know ingredients, just don't want to take the time, whatever. I have fallen into a new category recently: I can't clean.
