Someone's got taper madness taking over all ready, I can't imagine how bad it will be next week

Have you all started tapper yet?
I had may last long ride yesterday. 65 mile ride with a 2 mile run brick. I think everything I have this week is 90 minutes or less then less then that next week.

Feeling good about this right now but I keep "doing the math" in my head. "ok, so if I'm on the bike by 8:45 that gives me 4 hours to be off and running so that gives me 3 hours to finish the run." but if I'm out of the water by this time....." it's driving me crazy lol.

Agreed, I am goin crazy. I am spending all day at work getting mentally prepped and planned for the race. I am writing my strategy down and every possible scenario. This is probably the biggest race of my tri career so far. So much is possible on this course.

I don't get much of a taper, just a slight slow down in IM training by cutting out my long ride and run.  You guys will have the madness which will get your bodies ready to hammer on race day!  I think I had about a 10 day taper last year for my first HIM.

I'll just be using the race as a training day to work on nutrition and pacing.  I can't hammer it to much as I get one day off then have a 17 hour training week right after the race

Ha, the finish is in front of G's Pizza.  They have some damn tasty pizza, try the double crust ninja turtle pizza!  Then finish it off with some ice cream, life is going to be good

The 2 loop run course will be nice as B2B IM is a 2 loop out and back run course.  This will work out very nice for the pacing I'll use on IM race day, but I'll miss running along the lakeshore.

The IM training is indeed CRAZY.  I'm doing a 30 week program and have going at it for 20 weeks now, not including all the training done over the winter to have a decent base.  I can't wait til race day then I'll take a couple of weeks off after Nov 7 and not worry about being up early to get my workouts in.

Yeah wtf man? I was doing some great hill training on the run, planning on passing everyone on that hill at the turnaround point. Now there is a grand total of 72 feet of climbing over 13.1 miles. Yay. I guess I will find out if hill training improves my flat running. I also wanted to run along the beach. I guess I can't complain, they are making the course "easier."

Anyone know if they are changing the swim? The map won't show on the website anymore, and the description sounds different, because now they are saying it is an "out and back." Maybe we are starting at the pier now? That would make sense, because it is a long run up to T1 from the beach, like between .15 and .18 miles. My whole strategy on the run is gone now lol, but whatever.

So are we having our own afterparty or what?

The only thing I am going to miss with the run change is I was looking forward to it being a shaded run. I hate hot sunny runs.

Yeah, they did, so it is completely out and back now. This is good, so we can just get into a rhythm to conserve energy. I swam yesterday in an outdoor pool with a temperature of 72-73 degrees in just my tri suit. Let's just say I am going to look into renting a wetsuit lol.

I am going to be camping in Tawas Point State Park, about 4 miles from the race site. My site number is 102, in case anyone else is camping there.

I did a sprint this year with 65* water and I did not use my wetsuit. I was fine but I do plan to use my wetsuit for this swim.

I'm staying at the host hotel, no idea what room, just know it's bay side and way over priced.

How'd you get a site # all ready?  I looked at the reservation system awhile back and couldn't make a site specific reservation.  At this point were taking the trailer and will try the city park first and if that doesn't work will head to the Point.  Are you getting there on or before the 9th?  I see you can make specific reservations til then.

I assume they moved us close to the pier since that's the most direct shot to the road that will lead us to the transisiton area.  The swim and transistion last year were at the city park south of the campground, which would make to long of a haul to T1, which is all ready going to be a decent hump.  I'm thinking of dropping a pair of old shoes to wear from the water to T1, I'll figure it out for certain on race morning.

I just made my reservation on Monday, and there were only 2 sites open for the 11-13th, and I took the one closest to the bathroom and water fountain. I'll be camping with my Mom, friend from high school, younger brother and his girlfriend. I am at the State park, so that is why I can reserve a specific site. The city campground is all first come first served.

I think I will rough out the 300 meter run to T1. But then again, a bloodied toe is never good on the bike or run, so maybe I will copy your idea. I bought some arm warmers today, and am probably gonna rent a wetsuit the day before the race to try it out. I hope it isn't cold...

I see the map for the swim says that foot wear will be allowed from the swim to T1. I have a set of sandals that are just about shot I may use, or an old pair of running shoes. Not sure yet.
I tore my big toe open on the water exit of my first race this year. Did not know it until a few miles into the bike and really knew it on the run. Took me out of running for over a week. I'll cover my feet I think.

Atlas where are you making reservations?  I'm very confused if your only going for the weekend there isn't site specific reservations and your comment on only two sites being left made me check the reservations and there are still 94 sites open that I can use with a 30 foot trailer at Tawas Point.

If its packed we may be just head up to Harrisville, Van Etten, or down to Bay City as there were a ton of party groups at Tawas in July and could make for a tough night of sleeping if your unlucky enough to be next to those types of groups.

I am using a couple tents, so I dont know about trailer sites. I remember camping at Old Orchard a few times, but they rarely have any vacancies.

Ray, just so you know you don't have a site specific reservation from what I see.  You have what you could consider a "General Admission" site.  When you show up you pick a spot and let them know which one you took.  We used to camp every year on the same weekend as Tawas but at another park and it was the same way, in order to get lakefront sites in the park we stayed at we'd show up on Thursday morning to assure our water front spot.  If you get there early enough you shouldn't have much of a problem.  I'm not sure what to expect for that weekend.

What time are you going there on Friday?  The wife and I are thinking of driving up Wednesday and dropping the trailer off at the city park if there are openings then going back Friday morning.  We really want to be in town for this quick trip, plus I have to winterize the trailer as will be the last camping trip of the year having full hook ups makes the job a bit easier.

Just an FYI sites 38, 40, 42, 43, 44 are all nice sites, I walked by all the sites while out with the Rotts, but can't recall the area of 102.  We camped in 34 in July.  There's a walkway to the bathroom between sites 57 and 59 so you could still be close to the bathroom and be able to look across the bay at the race location.  For some reason they haven't updated there camp maps to show the walkway.

Dang, that is lame, but oh well, as long as I have a site I am not too worried, thanks for the info. When I reserved one it gave me the option of site 102 or site 4, and I chose 102, but I guess it isn't guaranteed.

I am looking to get up there around 2 or 3 in the afternoon, this way I can drive the bike course real quick and then check in. Packet pickup will be right after camp check in, and I want to have my final workouts done before 8 pm (1000 yard OWS, 20 min bike, 20 min run). If they are renting wetsuits at the race site, I might try one out for the OWS.

I might have to look for 57 and 59, those sound like great sites! One of my friends is coming down from Mackinac Island, so I will have a packed campsite with him, my Mom, my brother and his gf. After the tri I think I might go to the party for a couple hours with my friend and get hammered and play volleyball. Hopefully the weather holds out!

I finally booked a hotel room, closest I found was the Econo Lodge in Au Gres, 15 miles south of Tawas. Logistics seem easy, the hotel is right on 23...

Cool see ya at the race. I only have 1 more shift to work til I go home on leaveSmile

I looked at the long range forecast models, winds are lookin to be south-southeast at about 5 knots; so not too bad. Temps are lookin to be low 60's race morning (the long range models are low resolution, so accuracy is not great).

Had my first bad tri dream last night.
Got to the starting line late and missed the start. Talked them into letting me just go with the sprints thus putting me an hour closer to the cut off. They did then the dream fast forward to me coming off the bike with less then a minute to spare. That must have been a hell of a ride.
Got into T2 only to find out that I don't have a race bib. I never picked up my packet so I don't have a chip either.
The race director was scrambling to get me my stuff so I could finish. This went on for like an hour and I still was not out of T2. I woke up at this point.
LOL
Only a few more days.

Sounds like a horrible dream, but hopefully that means you will remember everything for the race. I drove up to Michigan last night, a good 9.5 hour drive from the St Louis area. I am in Harrison Township now, and will be in Tawas at about 2 pm friday, leaving at about noon or so on sunday.

The weather is looking clear, but cool. This weekend looks like it will play out well!
