jmk-brooklyn - 2012-10-30 7:45 AM Ny is a mess. Subway tunnels and ground zero are flooded. Mass transit will be disrupted if not completely shut down for a while. Hundreds of thousands of people w/out power. A huge fire out on Breezy Point has destroyed 50 homes and its still not under control. Oh, and there's a flipped-over construction crane boom dangling precariously hundreds of feet above 57th st. My neighborhood seems to be in pretty good shape, though we haven't ventured outside yet. Lights, power, water, etc. are working.

I know. It was terrible waking up to those images of NYC this morning. The Jersey Shore, especially Atlantic City, got hit hard, too. So sad. I live in South Jersey but managed to avoid any damage or loss of power. I'm very lucky.

Yeah, I just talked to my family this morning. They were told 10 days until power is restored. And if any of you know the history of the shore, Lucy the Elephant was destroyed.

There's a pic showing her intact after the brunt of the storm.

My mom lied

Mom's gonna Mom.

Lucy's FB page also says she's still standing.

I've told her a hundred million times to stop exaggerating. Man I'm kind of glad we sold the shore house, it's a wreck down there. We were right on a lagoon and the flooding there is intense.

Nah. The water is too clean and I don't see people with guns.

What is this a picture of? Is that a roller coaster? I saw this on the news and don't understand it. How did it get so far out to sea? The surge is up that high or was it swept out?

I have seen my share of hurricanes, but we are lucky not to get large storm surges here due to deep water right offshore.

A wise man once said "Don't put a rollercoaster on the end of a pier". I think the destruction was so bad because they haven't got hit since Hazel I believe. If this happened every year like the OBX the homes would have been gone long ago. Feel bad for the locals though.

as jmk mentioned- Breezy Point and Rockaway looks like pure Armageddon. Full blocks of bungalows (I'm now hearing 100+ homes) gone from the fire.  2-story homes covered in sand like after a snow blizzard. New Jersey shore towns did not have the extensive fires, but also had massive, massive destruction. One mayor said all of the houses on his beachfront were "obliterated".

I heard earlier today that there's another town (near Brick, N.J., maybe) that's burning but crews can't get to it because the town's been cut off by flood waters. I heard that several hours ago, but haven't heard any updates. What happened at Breezy Point was just terrible. That same town suffered terrible loss on 9/11 as many of its residents are fire fighters.

Did anyone see ABC World News Tonight last night? That segment about how they evacuated patients from NYU Medical Center (back-up generators failed) was really inspiring. So great to see an emergency plan put into place and come together successfully through the hard work of hundreds of people.

Ah. A rollercoaster on the end of a pier, got it now. We have a few ocean piers here, but none like that. I guess it's because they routinely get destroyed, even when they are built so "that will never happen again"

So sad to see seaside in shambles.  It was the back yard where I wasted my youth, the place I met my wife, and the place we bring our daughter.

Just saw this story about non-union utility crews being turned away from helping out. If I was without power and my local utility workers union turned away volunteers from other utility companies just because they weren't union I'd be pretty damn pizzed. Forget about presidential politics, this kind of thing is where our country is going wrong.

Unions do a lot of good for many of those they represent, but it is times like this that I relish the thought of every last union getting busted up.

Was just going to post the same thing.

Here is the important part:

Jersey Central Power & Light spokesman Ron Morano said in an interview with News 12 New Jersey that JCP&L has welcomed all out-of-state crews.

"We have not turned away any help," he said. "Absolutely not."

Hopefully that is true the the story is a rumor.

I like how the JCP&L guy threw the municipal guys under the bus...

A Jersey Central Power & Light spokesman.... did suggest that municipal companies might have issues working side-by-side with non-unionized contractors.

I've been asked to leave union job sites in NJ, even though I was an authorized non-union sub contractor. This doesn't surprise me.

As I'm watching various headlines and listening to the radio talking about NYC continuing to melt down.  I wonder if it's going to come back to bite the President over the weekend.

He pretty much took ownership of the relief effort and I honestly think did do a good job out of the gate.  However, if things continue to melt down I'm wondering if he will he get bogged down in the muck.  Bush obviously got a lot of crap for Katrina going to pot.

Maybe it is too close to the election and doesn't matter.  Just wondering what you guys think.

oh, and on a side note.  It's surreal how dependent we all are on "the matrix"  If any link in the chain breaks it all goes down hill fast.  Compound that with a densely populated area and it comes apart quick.

It is all of 3 days after the incident.  You really think things are melting down like they did in NO?

No, not at all, NO will likely likely never be topped.

I'm mostly referring to the impact on the people that's been on the news the last day or so.  no food, no water, no power, no transportation.  Obama made it a point to state that he was in charge of the disaster relief and things were going to go well.  If they don't go well the next few days I'm just wondering if you guys thought it would/could effect him.

Ironically Obama heads straight to Vegas again after his tour of NJ.  Somebody wasn't thinking on that one after Benghazi.

Interesting, I'm sure more will come out on this story.  Here's an interview with one of the crew leaders who was turned away.
