Watch snobs any suggestions...where to buy from and brands? (Page 2)

If I ever got a "high-dollar" watch it would be an Omega Speedmaster Professional,  because I'm a space geek.   If it's good enough for astronauts, it's good enough for me. Although it's not even close to being "high-dollar" compare to the gorgeous movements posted here.

Yeah ok, but how does the watch look?

 Yeah, that's a classic looking watch. My wife was really trying to get me to buy it instead of the one I eventually bought. A lot of the watches in their line up were appealing to my taste.

IMHO... There are only 4 pieces of jewelry that a man should wear to project a stylish yet professional image: 1) a wedding band 2) eyeglasses 3) cuff links and 4) a watch.

Considering 3 of the 4 are most likely worn on a daily basis, choose wisely.

I have shown three of my favorites below (I own the Seamaster - a dive watch). I have never been a fan of Rolex (great watch I just find most to be just to flashy for my taste). I prefer crisp clean design.

I'll only add this as I don't know much at all about timepieces...

To many men (myself included), it's no big deal.  Just something to keep the time.

To many women, it's not only an attractive accesory, but says something about your character.  Most men will NEVER look at another guy's wrist to check out their watch.  But many women will.  If you're single, investing in a handsome timepiece can make a difference.

just make sure your watch doesn't cost more than your car. 

I could go on, and on, and on about this topic, but I'll try to keep my excitement level down in order to keep this post from reaching multiple pages.

Questions:

• What are you going to be using the watch for?  Dress occasions only, everyday, all the time (including yard work)?
• Do you prefer big or more traditional sized watches (depending on your wrist size over 42mm in diameter is generally considered to be the threshhold)?
• Do you want a conservative look or do you want to draw attention to the watch?
• Are you looking for gold, stainless, combo?
• Any specific features?  (Chronograph, date, day/date, moonphase, etc.)?
• Do you want an automatic or battery powered?
• Do you want brand new or used?  Some older models may have features that you like better (ie:  glossy vs. matte finish dial), and you can get a great deal on a used one from a trusted source.

• Last but not least - what type of watch do you remember seeing that got you excited about getting a high quality watch in general?

This last one is pretty important as it can affect your enjoyment of the watch.  I was going to get a Submariner for the longest time until I really started thinking about what got me interested in watches.  I remembered the watch that Tom Selleck wore in Magnum, P.I. and all of a sudden, my mind was made up.

I'm happy to help with sources for used watches and to bounce ideas off of- just PM me and we'll exchange information - this can be an overwhelming process, but it can be a lot of fun also.

No, it's just like anything else... it means something to those that know. I do notice watches and what people wear... not for status, just interesting and conversation. No different than bikes... do you think the average person knows what Dura Ace is, or Record group?

I know very few women that know what good watches are. Just about everyone I have ever met know what good diamonds are.

More than likely, I don't have the income that would attract a women that knew I had $10K sitting on my wrist. But I would venture to guess, their interest would be in what that meant to her, not how incredible the movement was and the work that goes into watch making.

A watch is my only "man jewelry". I love them because of what they are. I have been drawn to watches very early on. But when it comes down to it, all "jewelery" is the same thing.... But to me, I would rather have a nice collection of watches, than a nice car. Unfortunately, I have neither.

Fyi, the insurance on a 5k watch is about $6 per month. Maybe $5.

XCtoTri - Some don't see the problem, but in a triathlon world equivalent, it's like cutting the run course and still accepting the medal.

I'm a recovering watch fanatic.  I'm down to 18 of them now, with most of those being lower-rent ones that have little monetary value.  I second the watchuseek forums.  I've purchased a few from over there, and have never been dissatisfied.

The great thing about watches is how unique preferences are.  I've always been a sucker for a good-looking auto dive watch.  I also prefer a little smaller diameter, as I don't want to look like I'm wearing a small dinner plate on my wrist.  From a brand standpoint, I'm a fan of mid-majors like Tag Heuer, Omega, Bulova, Seiko, Oris, Luminox, Hamilton, etc.  For the most part, you can get a good-quality, affordable watch from these manufacturers.  It looks good on your wrist, and won't require a second mortgage.

My all-time favorite would be a Breitling Navitimer.  But, just haven't convinced the Mrs. that it is a cost effective purchase.

I have the same watch. I really like how it looks. As I've said, it's broken three times now. First time was my fault, not having it properly serviced for a while and took it diving. Filled with water and had to go back to Rolex. Second time I dropped it and the stem broke. This time it just died.

I haven't looked at Breitling in quite some time. They were the first brand of high end watches that I really fell in love with.

... I think I could web shop for watches all day.
