kaiserman19 - 2009-09-08 2:53 PM Im in, I notice my body goes thru many changes in a race, hot to cold and back, this could be interesting.

We have noticed during intial testing that the temp spikes once you begin resting after being active.  In fact temps go down during the intial period of exercise.

We have collaborated with a sports physiologist (sic)  and this is due to the body response to stress (increased heart rate) and the internal thermostat intializing the body's cooling mechanism (SWEAT and EVAPORATION OF SWEAT).  Once the heart rate slows the body's internal thermostat triggers the body to stop cooling and thus the temps spike for short period.  So far the testing has been fascinating.

The only downside so far is we have had to intentionaly dehydrate and over heat ourselves during testing to see what happens.

During additional testing this will NOT be required.

I'd be willing to help test it, as for buying it I'd personally wait until it was integrated into a sports watch of some kind.  Yet another thing on my wrist/ankle would be annoying and wouldn't want it only being usable on the bike.

And I agree with the other guy, my "yes" turns to a "NO!" the moment the "baby way of taking your temperature" comes into play.

I would also be interested. I tend to be either cold or on the warm side. It becomes quite an issue when I am running in the winter. I start off freezing and end up so hot and sweaty that I immediately have to find dry clothing or I am doomed.

I am a type 2 (adult onset) diabetic, non insulin dependent.
I used to be on Glyburide and huge (read HUGE) problem with Hypoglycemia about 5- years ago.
Noticed peaks and valley's in temp with Sugar levels.
I have been On Mmetformin for about 3 months now and have not had this problem, but I am going to be training for Oly even next year.
1) Can this be worn in a pool?
2) Might something like t his give me an earlier warning for Hypoglycemia (Temp change not sugar level)

I'd be interested.  I'm one of those people who loves the heat and hates the cold.

YES!!!!! I would most definitely be interested in this! I fare very poorly in the heat because I do NOT sweat. It was very common for me to do my long runs with my buddy and look to see him dripping with sweat while I had dry skin, covered in goosebumps.

Absolutely.

I sweat like a stuck pig. Put a drywick shirt on me, and it's wet before the Garmin gets a satellite! I'd love see the difference in temperature numbers throughout training and racing.

I can already tell you my runs suffer in the heat, but by how much, I don't know.

RunnersWorld did a similar test with a runner running a 10k with high heats to test the potential for heat related injuries. It was amazing the differences and how much a few degrees affected the internal core temps and the overall performance. The only difference was his themometer was up his rear. I don't know of a runner who would EVER find that comfortable or normal!

Sure. Beam me up Scotty!

Here in FL I know that the heat severely impacts performance. My night time runs are a world away from daylight. It's even worse for us big clydes since we make so much heat on our own. If you can really deliver the device for <$20 you've got something that's at least good for $hits and giggles. Sign me up.

Interesting idea, and I can think of a couple of markets for it beyond triathlon/endurance sports:

1.  Remember a couple of years ago when a few pro football players keeled over (and I think one or two died) from heat injuries during training camp?  Especially at the price point you mention, you could probably sell into hot weather team sports all the way down to the high school/Pop Warner level.  If I had a kid playing football, I'd definitely buy one for him...

2.  When I served in Navy ships, preventing heat casualties was a big issue.  We had limited exposure times based on heat and humidity level.  Especially with our current concentration on desert operations, I'm betting that there would be a lot of military applications for this device.  I'm guessing that there are other industrial settings with the same kind of concerns.

Cool, maybe?  I've been involved in heat and cold studies at work, and devices to cool or heat the body.  I don't know how yours works BUT we put probes up the BUTT.  The bike seat is uncomfortable enough.    I would be interested in collecting quantitative data on the heat effects on performance.

We couldn't agree more....the patent actually states:  This invention falls into the field of body temperature measuring devices, specifically relating to a device that is conveniently  located XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX of an individual, regardless if that person is an athlete or a physical labor worker.

Some of our intial marketing verbage to high school athletic departments is:  "You don't measure the cost in dollars but instead lives saved"

Wow....I am overwhelmed (but not surprised) with the support and encouragement of the BT Community.  I will be calling the manufactuer to get an update on the "alpha" batch.  I am hoping to have them in hand in the next 30 days.  I am keeping a notebook of all of the interested parties, and hopefully will be able to provide a test unit to each of you.

This a relatively simple device, and will not electronically record data measurements like a Garmin 305 etc (at least it won't intially).

Hopefully the simplicity and low entry cost will make it cost effective to those who need this kind of input the most.  Like any business idea, the goal is to make money.....however, my partner and I were discussing today how cool it would be to actually prevent one death with a device created out of our heads.  THANKS AGAIN!

The device monitors changes (increase and/or decreases) in temprature during a workout....therefore, whether you run hot or cold compared to the "normal range" the device will be able to show you the relative change in temprature.

Before disclosing too much info on the device, I want to review some information with the patent attorney.  Thanks so much for the input.
