At my heaviest
(quite a few years ago
), I was 215.
Went on the crazy liquid diet made famous by Oprah
(the show where she wheeled out 40lbs of fat in a red wagon on stage
) and dropped down to 134lbs in 4 1/2 months. Kept it off for about 5 minutes. Shot back up into the 180's and stayed there for many years...but all the while, had kept up with the daily exercising. Put on lots of muscle, so I didn't look like I was carrying 180lbs.
3 years ago, got fed up with weighing more than my husband...it was starting to take a toll on our marriage. I got serious and made some permanent changes in my eating habits, and also ramped up my workout routine by starting to run. I have a lower back condition
(50% vertebral slippage at L5
), so the majority of my runs were
(and still are
) done on a treadmill. I managed to get down to 155, and stayed there for about 2 years.
At the beginning of this year, I made the decision that this will be the year that I finally do a triathlon. I began training in late February. I completed my first tri, a sprint distance, back on June 22nd. I'm planning on doing my second tri, an olympic distance, on August 10th.
Yesterday I weighed in at the gym...138lbs. Ideally, I'd like to be
(and stay at
) 135lbs. I'm close, but it will always be a constant struggle for me. Obesity runs in my family - my mother was morbidly obese, my sister is obese
(even after having gastric bypass!
)...and I was there at one point, so I know the potential will always be there...it's in my genes. I have to work extremely hard to keep my weight down
(in the gym 3-4 hours daily, in addition to swimming and biking
). Sometimes it feels like a job that I don't get paid for.
