rbschlesinger - 2005-11-08 1:43 PM For some reason I have always hated soggy foods. So I have never liked cereal. Even now I can sometimes eat a bowl of granola from the natural foods place but no prepackaged cereal. I get my fuel from egg whites and grits in the morning.

You don't like soggy foods but you like grits???

Does not compute.

Sorry, let me explain. I do not like food that should not be soggy if it was alone. For example, I love philly cheese steaks but think they are gross if gotten as take out and the bread has gotten soggy. Or onion soup, some onion soup comes with bread on the top covered with cheese, this does not work for me because the bread is not in it's normal state of being. On the other hand, grits are made to absorb the water and become, well, grits. And I can dip foods into liquid, just so long as it does not become soggy. Example, I like to sop up sauce I make or sauce left in the bowl with bread, but I wouldn't wait long enough for the bread to become soggy with the sauce. And I think with all this writing it has come across more obsessive than it really is

Has anyone else read Cryptonomicon? There's a great discussion of the correct way to eat Captain Crunch so that it doesn't get all soggy in the milk and doesn't rip up the roof of your mouth. It's pretty entertaining.

Anyway, soggy cereal is gross.

Grits. I guess it's kind of like cream of wheat, except it's made out of corn and you never, ever put sugar on them. It's a southern thang. Also known in some places as polenta, I think (yes, I watch food network way too much). Cheese grits are so good. Mmmmmmmm.

This is so weird. Not only were Jessica and I talking (this weekend) about Lucky Charms and the importance of a crunchy marshmallow, Jessica said she loves Capt Crunch but it tears up the roof of her mouth! (I don't like CC.)

All of you Crunch-o-haulics have failed to answer Chucky's poignant question regarding the milk...why add it at all? Have a glass on the side if you like the two tastes...

I add milk to the bowl because for me, the soggier the better. The ABSOLUTE best is the remaining milk with the various cereal tastes mixed in at the bottom of the bowl.

And...Admit it...if it's not a little soggy the various CHEX and FLAKE products rake the roof of your mouth.

Polenta is not served runny like grits. It's much firmer and you add parmigiano reggiano cheese to it. Usually served with lunch or dinner, not as a breakfast item (like in the south).

I don't eat grits.

Because dry cereal is ick. There are more than 2 choices - dry or soggy. There's wet and crunchy, too.

I vote wet and crunchy.

When made properly Grits are not runny. I prefer mine with Tabasco sauce in the morning. And they are not just for breakfast anymore. A lot of new "Southern Fusion" style of cooking dishes include grits in the main dinner course.

As I said, I don't eat grits. I am not a grit connoiseur. I've only seen them on other people's plates and they look unappealing - bland and runny.

I did have a taste of a friend's meal at Mise en Place - what I thought was mashed potatoes turned out to be tarragon white cheddar grits. They were whipped up like mashers, thick and very rich/creamy. I was shocked when the waiter said they were grits.

Unbeknownst to you, you ACTUALLY like soggy. Dry cereal is ick because it is TOO CRUNCHY. You prefer "wet" because at some molecular level the process of "sog" is taking place, turning the "ick" into soft, mushy, yummy goodness.

Only because you have now been confronted with the fact that ALL ALONG you've been eating cereal with soggy components.

I'm just kidding...I know I'm in the severe minority enjoying properly "aged" bowls of cereal.

I'm hungry!

Yeah, isn't it weird?

If they start talking about the type cheese or deli meat I bought for the Thursday evening social hour, I'm gonna fall out of my chair.

Dump the leche. It's got to be cold and by the time you've eaten the cereal, the milk is no longer cold.

For all my cereal rules, you'd think I eat alot. I rarely eat cereal. I think I ate some Smart Start about 6 months ago. Once.

And, as mentioned earlier, someone ate all me Lucky Charms this weekend!
